REQUALIFICATION OF AN OLD DOCK AREA
The project consists of an enclosed garden, that refers to the original ones common in the area, and new residential buildings in the old dock area. The plan follow the old path of the canal, with an additional row of terraced houses that forms two new public squares, and is based on a study of the perspective views. The materials used throughout the project, go together with the existing buildings. The terraced houses consist of two levels units with a spacious terrace overlooking the park and an enclosed courtyard entrance on the other side.

The project is an expansion and re-qualification of the first European civic library, through a better definition of the access to the existing buildings, and the characterization of the public spaces around it. The central building is the heart of the plan as it accommodates the entrance hall and the main reading room, connected to the old library. Towards the squares there’s a porch, than serves as filter between the city and the library, and relates to the tradition of the region.ground floor

The project consists of various buildings and open spaces. An old brick wall becomes the backdrop to the square where the porched main building is located: this is home to a bank and its establishment. The three towers buildings mark the new skyline: one is a hotel, while the other two, facing each other are residential buildings. The exhibition hall is a big cube kept almost empty inside, that can be adapted to different uses. An auditorium and a Roman theatre, have been planned to operate simultaneously, while on the opposite part, a large green park made of square shaped gardens on different levels, all connected by ramps, forms a modern hanging garden. The aim of the project is to create a system of squares that can be connected to the historical city and its texture.

The project revolves around the restoration of a fascist holiday camp. The goal is to leave the facade and the original structure unaltered. Courtyards provide ventilation and natural cooling, and are filled with plants that cover the rooftops making the building recognizable, while keeping its identity.

RECONSTRUCTION OF A RESIDENTIAL AREA / 2010
L’Aquila
Matteo Giulianelli / Michael Noridesign | visualization
The area is part of the historical center of the Italian city of L’Aquila, seriously damaged during the 2009 earthquake. The project has been made after a detailed analysis; particular attention has been paied to the topography, the historic roads, and the religious buildings in the area. The connection with the original urban form is achieved through a system of squares. The layout of the new buildings is influenced by the existing ones, and includes neighbourhood services and commercial activities.

In the project there are different types of residential units: courtyard apartment buildings, terraced houses and social housing (assuring interaction between different social classes and a certain degree of flexibility). Public buildings (a school, a civic center, a cafeteria and hotel) are integrated with the system of religious buildings, some of whose date back to the 13th century, and create an harmony of old and new.

plan
The hotel caters to “city users” interested in finding a more authentic spirit of the city. The different areas of the lobby evoke the idea of a traditional upper class Milanese house, from the reception to the long dining table and big glass window in the cafeteria’s kitchen, to the living room with modular sofas, and the self-standing sinks at the entrance. Along the central area, a water line protected with glass echoes to the traditional Navigli canals and is crossed by a bridge-walkway that connects the two main lifts to the rooms. The large central exhibition space, characterized by cubic adaptable volumes for art shows and temporary shops, connects the various functional areas of the hotel’s ground floor, and is paved the original brushed concrete.

The restaurant and the cafe face the square and are designed so they can be used independently; a lounge room and a fitness center overlook the garden, like a continuation of the inside to the outdoor. The industrial nature of the building is manifested in the preservation of the original structure of bricked arches; corten steel on some of the new architectural elements, further emphasizes this.

CASE STUDY: LAKEFRONT VILLA
The design of the house is influenced by the site, with windows and openings in the south side, towards the lake and a more closed north facade. The middle level is the entrance one, with the living areas that open to the lake through a small balcony. On the same floor there’s the main master suite with private bathroom and a walk-in closet. Another master suite is located on the ground floor with others two single bedrooms, a living room, and service areas towards the slope. The second floor is occupied by one big terrace/solarium, thanks to sliding windows that go for the whole width of the floor. The main material used is wood, both inside and out, resembling a traditional Swedish barn, but keeping its original natural colour.

CITY CENTRE WATERFRONT / 2011
Ålesund
section
The project includes two main residential areas, divided by a canal, a marina, with a dock for cruise ships, and a new bus terminal. It’s inspired by the block structure of the city texture, with a human scale in mind, provided by different building types, and a cohesive front that shields from strong cold winds. Using a variety of heights and volumes for the buildings, and implemented green areas, the plan creates an attractive urban landscape that promotes walking and cycling as means of transportation.

SUPER SUSTAINABLE CITY / 2011Stockholm
plan
Super Sustainable is a think-tank set out to visualize sustainable and alternative views of the future. The main objectives of designing housing on and around Stockholm waterfront are to utilize this resource to its fullest potential while creating designs that will also preserve the harbour most important assets. The floating district acts as a bridge between existing city zones, creating a more fluid urban landscape. The sense of neighbouring community is given by various sizes of housing. Floating bridges at different scales provide possibilities for many modes of transportation, especially foot traffic and cycling. Connection to city water bodies is not only preserved, but strengthened, bringing people closer to the water than ever before.

NEW YORK THEATRE CITY / 2011
New York
plan
The new theatre campus offers rehearsal spaces for shows by new smaller companies, but it’s also a public space enjoyed by all citizens, regardless of the activity in the theatres, thanks to its large park. The project consists of three buildings: the west one contains the main performance room, the eastern one the secondary theatres, and the smallest north building is designed as a public space, with a library, an exhibition area, and a Roman theatre. The buildings have organic forms that blend with the park and are characterized by volumes that fit the functions contained within, adding a sculpture-like quality to them. The aim is to retrain and revitalize an area in disuse, integrating it with the rest of the city and improve the livability through a new cultural center in a green area.

AURORA BOREALIS OBSERVATORY / 2012Rovaniemi
Visitors can enter the area from the south gate; from there starts a pedestrian walk in the forest. Around the main building (that function like a reception, restaurant and spa) are placed 11 guests villas, with one or two bedrooms. Between the these guest houses there are wooden tree houses, where people can enjoy the view of the northern light. On a strategic position there is the main observatory with exhibition areas, a cafe and a lounge area.
