Portfolio?Justinas Dadonas
WHO AM I ?I’m no artist, no engineer, no scientist, no designer. I’m simply curious. I hope I am an explorer. This portfolio is a showcase of some of my skills, of none I’m a master. Still, I hope that combining these skills may one day culminate in something that is greater than the sum of them all together. Something unpredicted. Maybe even some-thing original. I do believe, that creativity, comes from combining things. That’s what I’m working for. That‘s why I’m always looking for new people to work with.
My educational background is in science and entrepre-neurship. Both of these fields had become increasingly important for artists and designers. The line between art and science is becoming blurrier and there’s a great need for both of them. I find myself somewhere on that line. Combining art, science, engineering and de-sign. Trying to figure them out. While I’m not a pro-fessional in any of those fields, they all interest me and I’m prepared to work to master them. Most of the skills you see here are self-thought, but I’m always searching for a place to be taught by others. It’s the only way to go forward in a pace demanded by this world and, most importantly, by my own curiosity. I hope I could give something back to that place and people there too.
My work may not showcase a clear vision, even seem generic and it is definitely unprofessional. This is be-cause, according to Carl Sagan, “I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m on my way”. I’m definitely on the right track according to the first part of that sentence. I just hope, I’m following the second part too.

TINKERThe future belongs to those who are not afraid to get their hands messy. From vintage racing bicycles, to modern furniture, from motorcycles to film making gear – I make things. Well, for now, I destroy much more than I make, but maybe that’s how new things are eventually created. I’m constantly fiddling with something in my mind and with my hands. Wheth-er it would be welding, working with resins or pow-er tools, none of these things scare me too much. Making things also urges me to always keep an eye on new materials, manufacturing technologies like 3D printing and design trends. Combine this hobby with science and art and you have a person, who could have an ability not only to imagine things, but to build them too.
Nimbus 2000 Replica Prop Building props is a great lesson not only in making things, but also in storytelling. One has to find out the story and purpose of the prop, do a big amount of research , find right materials and etc.
Standing deskThis was an exercise in minimal furniture design. I wanted a table, that’s built from real materials, without chemicals, and most importantly - feels good to work on.

Vintage Bicycles and MotorcyclesThere is something very unique about vintage engineering. They just have something in-tangible about them. Old cars, motorcycles and bicycles - all of them interest me and have many design features I admire and love to work with. Most of my work is done on vintage Italian racing bicycles, because of their air of grace, effectiveness and beauty.
DIY camera gearGlide cams, dollys, sliders, shoulder rigs... I’ve done them all. Camera gear may not be the most important part of cinematic storytelling, but it is an essential one. Most im-portantly, I think that making your own gear makes you understand technique much better.
TELL STORIESI’m no storyteller. I think very few people are and I have a great respect for them. Great art, great design and great science have at least one characteristic in common – they have an ability to tell a narrative. To have a story to tell means to have a life to live. The storytelling medium that is closest to my hearth is film making. I’m no filmmaker yet, but I adore this medium. Its abili-ty to allow us to empathize, create new realities, carry us to the worlds beyond is equal to magic. One day I’ll create something that’s more than just another visual glitch. For now, I’m slowly learning – cinema history, technique and meaning.
Cinematic TechniqueBeing a practicing cinema lover I try to put everything in an efficiently curated structure. Cinenotes is a notebook of cinema technique and history. It includes both sources of inspiration, as well as analysis and lectures on cinematic storytelling.thecinenotes.tumblr.com
MontageWhile I haven’t created anything substantial, I’m always trying to improve myself in different areas of film making. Editing is one of them. I have done scientific videos, cinematic montages, short animations, intro animations and similar small projects.
PropsCuriosity for tinkering and film making makes for interesting results. Above are some air powered fake blood cannons.

PhotographyCinematic storytelling interests me most and photography is a big part of that. With background in physics, I have a pretty good understanding of technical part of pho-tography - optics, sensors, lights... Macro photography and light painting above are couple of examples of me experimenting with this medium.
DESIGNI’m aware that today’s world requires art-ists and designers to be skillful in digital media. While I’m no specialist in any of those programs, I have fiddled with most of them – whether designing a portfolio in InDesign, drawing posters or charac-ters in Photoshop, creating logos in Il-lustrator. At one point or another I have tried most of them – I just never had a chance to work in expedient fashion with them. I also have basic understanding of HTML and CSS programming, Word-press administration, AutoCAD draft-ing, SketchUp modeling and many other programs beneficial for designers.

Digital mediumsI am no specialist in any of digital programs used for design, but I have tried a lot of them - Adobe tools, SketchUp, AutoCAD. I am actively learning working with Wacom tablet too. With a purposeful task, learning any of these digital tools will not be a problem.

VISUALIZE THE WORLDThere’s just too much talking in this world. Not enough showing. That’s why it’s important for me to be able to show, instead of just telling. I have basics in academic drawing and painting. I also have whole bunch of experience in doodling. I truly believe that drawing is one of the fastest ways of communication and a great way to tell a story. While these works can’t be called art in any way, I hope that being able to interact with the world visually makes the person a bet-ter communicator and, in some way, an artist.

I CAN ALMOST DO SCIENCEWhile I may not be professionally skilled in any fields, I’m a curious amateur in so many more. Background in science gives me a much wider perspective to the world around us. My Bachelor thesis was done on the toxicity of Quantum dots (I can tell you a lot about that if that is your thing). I am sure that deeper understanding of this world can be invaluable in design or art, giving some unique points of view. I have also worked on product development in scientific fields – prototyping, researching and producing solar energy products. This gave me an opportunity to learn how to practically use sci-entific knowledge in real world situations.
SIDE PROJECTSWhether it may be a project for city riverside reconstruction, social initiative to imple-ment new educational platforms, courses to learn programming or cinema history… there are always some side projects I’m participating in. Some may call it entrepre-neurship. I wouldn’t go that far...
