Sidney, OH / August 2015 - December 2015

Ferguson Construction Company

While working at Ferguson Construction Company, I picked up various skills. FCC builds mostly large industrial buildings. I worked in AutoCAD, Revit, Sketchup and Photoshop. I completed both preliminary and working architectural drawings, as well as picking up design skills. I helped design a few projects to appease both the county building officials and the owners. I learned better how to work with constraints in order to achieve something great.

Court Atkins Architects

When working at Court Atkins Architects, I learned many essentials. CAA works with contractors to create small commercial buildings and tenant upfits, and high end residential homes. While there, I worked solely in AutoCAD. At CAA, I worked mostly on small commercial, but also on homes. I learned how to complete both preliminary and working drawings, as well as learning commercial code.

Armature

We were instructed to create a piece of 6” x 6” x 6” plaster cube. My plaster piece has many voids in it, which I emulated in my armature piece. I took my voids in my plaster, mirrored and extruded them. Also, this being an armature, I wanted to showcase the plaster piece by making it appear to be floating.

Promenade

We were given the task to create a piece of 10’ x 10’ x 10’ structure were people on our campus would want to hang out, read and socialize in. This piece would be a part of a sequence of other structures to create a bigger space where students could study and socialize. We wanted to create a space that could seat many people, but could also provide some shade on sunny days.

Stegar Student Life Center

We were instructed to take a building on campus and focus on something about the buildings design. Stegar Student Life Center is a slightly curved, thin building. With the building in mind, I drew it, over-exaggerating the curve of the building. I also wanted to focus on the red brick of the building, which is the accent color on an all gray building.

Copy // Paste

First, we selected a famous architect’s building plan; then we were to copy and paste it and make something new. My architect was Frank Lloyd Wright; I chose Fallingwater as a copy paste idea. I took the plan, shown, and copied and pasted it. Making sense of the new plan, I thought that it could be a office space or a home, with the extremities being executive offices / bedrooms, respectively.
