When I was in high school, I liked reading magazines about architecture and decoration in my spare time and I was captivated by the amazing creativity of top designers. With great passion, I chose urban design as my major in Wuhan University, where I have gained the profound knowledge of architecture, urban design and landscape design. Meanwhile I have also realized that urban design is very challenging which requires the designers to master all kinds of strategies and the observation ability. So I am determined to further my study overseas to enrich myself after college graduation. More importantly, urban design is to create better life for people, which is the dream that I pursue in my whole life.

This project is to design a folklore museum in Chongqing, a mountainous city located in Midwest China. There the gentle slopes will be leveled into platform, and on steep slopes buildings will be supported by pillars. The bottom layer, as the smooth terrain of the foundation, will be overhead to provide space of greenery. And the cube, the basic unit of the building, will be transformed to present all kinds of folk cultures.

1.The showroom gets enough sunlight through big French windows, but the number of the walls for exhibition display decreases, leading to the low utilization of space.2.The showroom with fewer windows can display more exhibits but needs artificial lighting.

3.To add more display boards in the showroom with many windows to ensure the number of exhibits and save energy4.The patio is used to connect several square showrooms

5. With display boards added, the traveling route and the distance between exhibits and visitors will be limited.6. After recombination, different viewing distances and angles of view are still reserved.

7. The regular route suitable for chronological ex h i b i t i o n d i s p l ay i s co nve n i e nt fo r commentators.8. The circular visiting route around the patio gives visitors freedom to choose more routes.

Wuhan is a transportation junction located in central China with population of about 10 million. In the late Qing Dynasty, English, Russian, German, French, Japanese concessions were opened up along the Yangtze River of Hankou region. Relying on the shipping, it rapidly developed into a commercial center with convenient transportation. Design base is in the old town of Hankou, and also in the former British concession.

SWOT:STRENGTH: Located in downtown, along with the r ivers ide, a good business climate and popularity, the architectural culture of the historic district, convenient transportation.WEAKNESS: busy traffic, crowded living space, the lack of public space, unattractive walking space.OPPORTUNITY: the newly opened metro station.THREAT: Rise of the surrounding shopping malls, new development of surrounding residential space, the hollowing-out of the inner city.

To Improve the quality of the living environment and creating suitable public space for walking activities . 1. Design the interior green corridor connecting the river. 2. The long green axis as the skeleton connects the four functional areas: residential, official, commercial and historic preservation districts.3. Public spaces are set in the functional areas for people to do activities. 4. Network is established to strengthen the links between the various functional areas and public spaces.

High-rise buildings Providing adequate office and green space but the high visual angle making people feel depressed.

Low-rise buildingsSuitable for commercia l activities along the street, but leaving little floor space for greenery.

Combination of the above twoProviding adequate space to meet the demand of different functions, and retaining a sufficient amount of green space as a balance.

Overhead space Attracting people to enter; facilitating flow of traffic with a corridor connecting the middle.

With the rise of commercial shopping plaza, street shops are gradually fading and evolving into part of the shanty towns, a mixed commercial with large residential density. Large commercial complex superseding the small business is the way to wake up vitality of traditional walking streets. Shanty towns are transformed into snacks and bars; Squares and open space are set around historic buildings connecting with each other.

To achieve the ecological restoration of the Moon Lake in the campus of Wuhan University, the design introduces the sustainable energy circulatory system powered by solar energy. The eutrophication water in the lake is piped into the BOX with the combination of different plants for ecological purification reaction, and then purified water flows back to Moon Lake by gravity.

20

Box elements extracted from the scientific research base, are newly combined, shifted, slid and cut by using the parametric design techniques. The elements finally evolve into diversified architecture and landscape and help to restore the ecosystem of the Moon Lake.
