Groundwork North Wales worked in partnership with Ysgol

Beddgelert, Gwynedd, to develop the school’s allotment area. Parents, Pupils and Governors joined Groundwork North Wales volunteers in building

three timber planers and a compost bin. These developments support the schools’

horticultural activities as well as assist with the teaching of growing fresh produce.

Pupils took part in an allotment workshop led by Groundwork North Wales staff. During

this session pupils designed a growing timetable planted seeds and plants at the school’s

garden.

The school are also keen to develop an area of redundant land at the rear of the school,

and are raising money to allow Groundwork North Wales to return in the new school year

to lead the project.

Groundwork North Wales worked with the pupils, parents and

friends of the school to plant a range of native trees and

developed a wildflower garden.

The pupils learnt about the variety of different trees such as

Silver Birch, Oak, Lime and Chestnut while gaining an

understanding about the planting process and on-going

maintenance of these trees

Over two sessions, Groundwork North Wales Volunteers

helped to develop an area of disused ground for planting. They

also trimmed and cut back the school’s willow tunnel.

During the sessions the pupils were given the opportunity to

think about how they would like to further develop the green

spaces around the school, and in particular what types of

environmental activities they would enjoy.

This project brought together community groups from the Maesgeirchen and

Hirael areas of Bangor and encouraged intergenerational cooperation and co-

hesion. It also provided opportunities for residents, volunteers and members of

the wider public to develop horticultural skills to support the healthy living

agenda.

Paul Gordon Roberts, AGRO Horticulture Coordinator noted:

“The Penrhyn Allotment project has provided opportunities for

many of our clients to benefit from peer led workshops in a ther-

apeutic environment. The project has opened gardening up to

many new people from the group and local community. We are

very thankful to Groundwork North Wales for helping to make

this project happen by leading the volunteers in activities and

thanks to the funders for their support too”.
