Summer Placement 2015

Research and Development Laboratory Centre for a major University 1.

Worked on initial design ideas for the cafe and reception area in the large Atrium space. These concept sketches were used to develop the project to RIBA Stage 2 – Concept Design by the Interior Design and Architectural team. I found this project both challenging and enjoyable as it was my first real commercial experience working to strict deadlines and meeting Client needs.

Contributed to the CAD plan of the ground floor, adding furniture to the atrium space, and ensuring the design used realistic dimensions for the user to easily navigate through the space. Attended design team charrettes to discuss ideas and develop the scheme further. I enjoyed the experience as I was able to listen to feedback and discussions from professional Designers and Architects.

The brief for this project was later changed, resulting in the atrium space being removed and replaced by additional office spaces.

Put together moodboards to capture the overall feel and theme to the building. Used in the ‘RIBA Stage 2, Concept Design’ report. Working with the Head of Interiors at the practice to ensure the moodboard created an ‘earthy’ organic feel with natural shapes and colour palette to suit the overall project concept. Contacted furniture suppliers and manufacturers for quotes on ‘Furniture, Fittings and Equipment’ (FF+E) items of the space. Throughout this project we were continuously looking at cost in order to meet the budget for the Quantity Surveyor. It was both a challenging and invaluable experience working to a strict budget.

Rendered a section through the building using Photoshop to ensure the Client can easily understand how the building works. This highlights the specific FF+E items chosen to suit various functional areas. Sourced appropriate images of furniture and existing spaces so the viewer is able to visualise the 3D space more easily.

Contributed to the draft and FF+E Schedule document. This involved referencing all finishes including walls, ceilings and floors and identifying the correct room name and number. Identified from CAD plan drawings. I found this extremely beneficial as it gave me an insight into the extra detail required in the professional industry.

Assisted a professional Interior Designer at the practice with the redesign of a reception area. Our client was a world leader and innovator in the design and manufacturing of rapidly deployable barrier systems. They were looking for a more stylish industrial feel to their reception area, whilst also creating a comfortable atmosphere.

Carried out initial sketch work, looking at wall finishes, reception shape and potential storage ideas.

Created initial moodboard of potential ideas and precedent images to ensure the Client’s needs were met. Fed feedback from the client into the design to develop and enhance the interior to suit their requirements.

A lead Interior Designer at the practice recently went to visit the clients site. Using Photoshop, I layered over an image of the space to create the initial visual showing potential ideas (Image 1). This was then emailed to the Client for their thoughts and comments. Image 2 shows the final visual created from taking onboard all feedback, together with their initial intentions.

Contacted material suppliers and gathered a range of samples of the potential materials used in the design.

Later contributed to the CAD drawing to ensure the FF+E fit into the space. I enjoyed working on this project, as It enabled me to use all my skills developed at University towards a professional project, working with a Client and a strict budget. I particularly found liaising with the client and receiving feedback very pleasing, as it allowed me to develop the design into something more suitable.

Contributed to space planning the reception area of the Fairhursts Design Group. Brief was to create a more practical and user friendly space to be in. Creating group work areas, perfect for discussions with clients and furniture suppliers.

Worked on the CAD drawing to draw up desired furniture pieces to ensure they fit within the area. I found it a worthwhile experience enhancing a space that I was already acquainted with and working in.

Currently the timeline consists of a variety of different boards. The aim was to create a more finished appearance that grouped all the boards together for a continuous wall graphic. I enjoyed working on this project as it allowed me to improve my knowledge of the company.

A section of my initial concept idea

Developed a ‘timeline’ graphic concept to install on a wall of the Fairhursts Design Group reception area. Involved using existing boards and re-defining information to create a stylish graphic that fit well within the space provided.

Other experience whilst on placement Below shows extra tasks I carried out whilst on my 6 week placement. What I found very rewarding is understanding how the office and business operates.

Kept a record of the amount of time spent working on projects using timesheets. Started to familiarise myself with new ‘Revit’ programme software. Met with reps from suppliers and manufacturing companies to discuss their products and how they could be deployed in specific projects. Attended group project meetings to discuss ideas and progress with the project.

Worked with Professional Architectural and Interior Designers were I gained valuable feedback and advice, to enhance personal skills. Attended a seminar hosted by ‘Milliken’ at Hotel Gotham, Manchester. Involved in a group discussion with designers from other practices, a rooftop tour of architecture in Manchester and an in-depth tour of the hotel itself. I really benefitted from this day as it allowed me to engage with other designers. It also gave me the opportunity to experience a high class stylish interior and the standards that are expected in this field.
