1. Select an apparent healthyindividual as your client and takethem through the process ofscreening.

2. Complete the PAR Q form withthem to ensure it is safe forthem to exercise. If you arehappy that they can exercisesafely, move onto the clientscreening questionnaire.

3. Please complete the clientscreening questionnaireensuring each question isanswered as fully as possible(including measuring the clients’height, weight and BMI).

4. Plan a 45 - 60 minute sessionbased on information gatheredfrom the client screeningquestionnaire.

5. Your programme plan mustinclude the following:

• A suitable warm up andcool down

• Main CV component

• 3 types of cardiovascular (CV)machines from the following:

- Treadmill

- Stepper

- Upright cycle

- Rowing machine

- Cross trainer

• Resistance component

- 4 resistance machine lifts (SeeAnnex 1)

- 4 free weight exercises (SeeAnnex 1)

- 3 body weight exercises (SeeAnnex 1)

6. The main CV component must beplanned in more depth than therest of the exercises and showhow you can develop client co-ordination by building exercises/movements up gradually over aperiod of 15 – 20 minutes. Youmust show the breakdown of theaerobic curve (in minutes) and ateach stage what you expect theclients RPE level to be.

7 You must also provide evidence of how would you safely adapt your session for the following special population clients:

• 14 – 16 year olds

• Antenatal and postnatalwomen

• Older adults (50+)

• Disabled people

8 You will be observed instructing your client through your planned programme

9. Once your observed assessmenthas finished, you will be givena minimum of 15 minutes to sitwith your client, gain feedbackfrom them and complete theinstructor evaluation form.

10. You will then have a plannedfeedback session with yourassessor where you will begiven specific feedback on yourperformance (your assessormay also ask you somequestions) and be informedof your assessment decision, along with the next steps ofyour qualification.

P A R Q F O R M

If you are between the ages of 15 and 69, the PAR-Q will tell you if you should check with your doctor before you significantly change your physical activity patterns. If you are over 69 years of age and are not used to being very active, check with your doctor. Common sense is your best guide when answering these questions. Please read carefully and

answer each one honestly: Select YES or NO.

P A R Q F O R M

If you have answered YES to any of the above questions:

If you answered yes to one or more questions, are older than age 40 and have been inactive or are concerned about your health, consult a physician before taking a fitness test or substantially increasing your physical activity. You should ask for a medical clearance along with information about specific exercise limitations you may have.

In most cases, you will still be able to do any type of activity you want as long as you adhere to some guidelines.

If you have answered NO to any of the above questions:

If you answered no to all the PAR-Q questions, you can be reasonably sure that you can exercise safely and have low risk of having any medical complications from exercise. It is still important to start slowing and increase gradually. It may also be helpful to have a fitness assessment with a fitness instructor or personal trainer in order to determine where to begin.

PLEASE NOTE: If your health changes so that subsequently you answer YES to any of the above questions, inform your fitness or health professional immediately. Ask whether you should change your physical activity or exercise plan.

When to delay the start of an exercise program:

If you are not feeling well because of a temporary illness, such as a cold or a fever, wait until you feel better to begin exercising.

If you are or may be pregnant, talk with your doctor before you start becoming more active.
