Portrait in Botanical Drawing
Supply List:
Hot pressed watercolor paper that is as smooth as you can find so that you can get fine detail.
Smallest size would be 5” x 7”; 8” x 10” is a better size.
Sketch book that corresponds in size to the watercolor paper. You will be drawing your specimen life
size and transferring it to the watercolor paper from the sketch book.
Tracing paper to match the sketch book size.
#HB sketch pencil or whatever you like to use to draw
4H pencil
2B to 6B pencil (Just one of the B pencils to transfer the drawing)
Pencil sharpener
Plastic eraser, NO kneaded erasers please
Eraser shield if you have one
Drafting tape
Ruler, 6” clear ruler works the best but bring whatever you have
Brush to remove eraser crumbs
Water container
Small paint brushes, #1 or #2 or #4 (whatever small brushes you have)
Lint less paint rag to wipe brushes on
Distilled water for water container and to wash brushes out with
Magnifying glass if you have one
Color wheel if you have one
Small painting tray (to dilute colors if necessary)
Regular professional colored pencils
Any professional watercolor pencils (not metallic)

*These are suggested colors based on what we might draw, I am hoping to pick up
wildflowers, or have you bring in native plants that are flowering that you are inspired
to draw.
Prismacolor Equivalents: Because many of you work with Prismacolor pencils I have listed the approximate colors that
are close to the Faber Castell pencils so that you can see the colors. If you know you want to work
with blue flowers then you will have to supply some blues etc. These reds, oranges and yellows are
good basics that work well with most of the warmer colored flowers. The greens work with most
plants.
