NAUTICAL INFORMATIONBRAZILIAN ChARTS:081-1600-1614-1616-1643- 1644-1645
The South Entrance is the safest way to reach São Sebastião,being 300 m wide in its narrowest part and
dredged 25 meters deep (at least) surrounded by four beacons.
The north entrance channel is 18 meters deep dredged in a 550 meters wide stretch in its narrowest band.
however, the access is limited to 10 meters of maximum draft.
The port of São Sebastião’s channel is 12.3 miles long, therefore vessels drawing over 18 m should pay
special attention when navigating in the São Sebastião channel. Charts 1614, 1643 and 1644 show several
cautionary notes with depths of 20 m or less in the proximities of the channel limits.
Max drafts for vessels using turning basin: Vessel 181 to 200 m LOA, FwD 09,60, AFT 09,60 m (2 hours before
high tide) and vessel over 200 m LOA, FwD 07,00, AFT 09,14 m (during flooding tide).
Existing Dangers: Cautions on charts DhN No 1614 AND 1644 showing the existence of submarine cables
should be strictly observed. It is forbidden to anchor within the marked area.

NAUTICAL INFORMATIONBRAZILIAN ChARTS: BRAZILIAN ChARTS – 2140, 2111 AND 2112
The Port of Porto Alegre is reached by way of Lagoa dos Patos with unlit buoyed channels, with length
of approximately 30 miles at each end. Navigation through the channels is unsafe when dark, and ships
therefore, leave Rio Grande only by daylight in time to negotiate 'Feitoria' channel (the Rio Grande end)
before nightfall, travel through the lake at night and anchor at 'Itapua' channel entrance to wait for daylight
before proceeding into the approach channel to Porto Alegre. Vessels returning from Porto Alegre follow
the same procedure in reverse. Cut-off times for vessels leaving Rio Grande to Porto Alegre are 13:00 hours
in winter and 14:00 hours in summer and from Porto Alegre to Rio Grande are 13:30 hours in winter and
15:30 hours in summer.
