Dinner a board in a Boat in Douro RiverToday, Porto celebrates its Patron Saint. The St John‘s festival is much loved byPortuguese people of all ages and is very much a family event. It’s a time to gettogether with friends and family; or take a walk through the streets towards thespectacle of the best firework display in town. The main attraction is the fun itprovides as well as the local holiday. It’s a day to put one’s troubles aside and enjoysome fun and laughter. The streets are full of stalls and decorations, music can beheard everywhere and popular songs are sung. Since the weather is usually veryhot this time of year, the traditional fare is delicious grilled sardines, green peppersand rice and traditional Portuguese cabbage soup, called Caldo Verde. The smellof grilled sardines fills the city as it radiates from street corners and gardens torestaurants and beaches. Enjoy a spectacular fireworks display which lights up thesky over the Dom Luís Bridge and the Douro river, as thousands of visitors fill thestreets below. Our dinner tonight will be on board the famous rebelo boats, basedin availability, and will provide us with a front row seat to all the festivities as thesounds and sights of St. John Festival dance all around the city.
