About Beja City

With around 25.0 00 inhabitants, Beja is the capital of the “Baixo Alentejo” region, and the town where the Polytechnic Institute of Beja is located. Beja and the regions’ history date back to the Roman times when it became the regional capital of Julius Caesar’s empire. Nowadays Caesar’s Pax Julia still exudes an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity difficult to find elsewhere. The town’s streets and its historical centre are a silent sign andtestimonial of past times.

About Beja City

In the town centre we can also see the “Praça da República” (Town Hall Square, called Republic Square), with the Charity House Renaissanceloggia and a lineup of “Manuelino” style buildings. A lot more could be said about Beja’s rich past, but Beja is also about modernity. It is a well-equipped town with new green leisure areas and parks, where both residents and visitors can spend some quality time. It has a wealth of cultural, sports and leisure facilities, as well as commercial areas, good restaurants and sunny esplanades, a vivid night life – in short, all the features of a modern town.

About IPBeja

The Polytechnic Institute of Beja (IPBeja) is situated in the Alentejo region and it is a Higher Education and Research Institution, integrating the Polytechnic subsystem of Higher Education, which differs from the University one in its focus on experimental education and hands-on learning process, in harmony with the principles of the Bologna process. Nowadays, IPBeja has 2.500 students taking in a great variety of Degrees at different learning stages. Vocational courses (short cycle, level IV, 60 ECTS), Undergraduate (1st cycle); Postgraduate/Masters Degrees (2nd cycle) and other vocational post graduate programmes focussed on specific professional areas. In its early years, the IPBeja focussed on areas such as Engineering, Agrarian Sciences, Technology, Education and Teacher Training. More recently, and with the aim of catering for new social demands, IPBeja has embraced and widened its areas of influence into management, tourism, social sciences, arts and multimedia, sports and health.

About IPBeja International Summer School

IPBeja works in close relation to the region where it is based, seeking to gain from the potentialities and genuine character of Alentejo, its people and traditions, and the aspects which characterise its economic potential. On the other hand, as an institution that promotes research and technical know-how in a variety of fields, IPBeja’s International Summer School 2015 will offer courses that target specific themed interests but that are also addressed at a general and global, diverse and multicultural audience, interested in combining the opportunity of broadening their knowledge of specific areas with the chance to get to know some of Alentejo’s natural, social and cultural traits.

IPBeja`s Centre for Language and Culture

IPBeja’s Centre for Languages and Cultures was created in 2010 with the aim to promote language and cultural diversity and to provide for the lifelong learning of foreign languages. The Centre’s main activity is the organization of language courses, including Portuguese for non-native speakers, aimed at various target audiences, and certified according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). It also aims at responding to specific language training requests, by designing tailor-made language courses. The Centre is part of ReCles.pt (Portuguese Association of Higher Education Language Centres) and of CercleS (European Confederation of Higher Education Language Centres).

In July the intangible heritage will be explored, focusing on the pattern in which the people from Alentejo made use of time as a means of creating customs and habits have become very characteristic of the region. The gastronomy of the Alentejo, the oral traditions and other cultural icons show the Alentejo as the “Land of the Artisans of Time”.

Lab-At aims to understand the territory of Alentejo, mainly Beja´s district, in its multiple dimensions such as: demographic aspects; natural environment; cultural heritage (both material and immaterial heritage); handicraft and traditional trades. Its goal is also to promote the identity of each territory and its particularities. This structure works in the field with the communities and groups of people, empowering individuals and supporting and developing projects concerning the valorization of traditional knowledge in a constant dialogue with contemporary needs and aims, congregating tradition, invention and (re)invention of traditional ways of life.

Plants, People, Art and Culture

In close connection with the Botanical Museum of the IPBeja, this course will study the traditional uses of plants in a variety of social and cultural contexts, past and contemporary (spices, stimulating beverages, medicinal and aromatic plants, fibres, dyes and plant resins). The programme also includes the study of the Portuguese material culture in which the main component are plant raw materials produced in non urban contexts as well as the symbolic uses of plants in the Christian religion and in the western art (Greek and Roman, Medieval, Renascence, Baroque, etc.).

About Alentejo

The Outeiro do Circo is a large fortified settlement from the Late Bronze Age (1250-850 BC) located in the district of Beja in the Alentejo plain. It occupies an elongated hill, with a maximum height of 276 m, bounded on the north and west by other small elevations. The southern border is dominated by the plain. Surrounding terrains are made up of a fertile agricultural soils called "Black Clays", where numerous archaeological sites, dating from the II and the beginning of I millennium BC, where discovered. The element that gives greater emphasis to this settlement is an impressive wall that borders it almost entirely.
