POSITION PROFILE
ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSReporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, this position provides collaborative leadership in establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with elected officials, government agencies and nonprofit/community/business organizations to advance the University’s educational mission and its role as an intellectual and cultural center. This position leads broad-based advocacy at the local, regional, state and federal level to support partnerships, grow funding streams and demonstrate the University’s integral role for and impact on the region. This position is supported by the Director of State and Community Relations, the Associate Director of State and Community Relations, an Administrative Support Coordinator, and an external consultant.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Develop comprehensive strategies to effectively engage elected,
appointed, civic and business leaders at the city, county, regional, state and federal levels to advance University interests
• Serve as primary liaison with officials from the CSU system related to advocacy and government relations
• Coordinate campus visits by or office visits to elected, appointed and civic leaders
• Attend appropriate community events as a CSUF representative • Communicate and collaborate with campus colleagues to identify
funding needs and partnership opportunities• Facilitate relationship-building and partnerships between CSUF depart-
ments and programs and external government and community agencies • Provide counsel to campus writers of institutional and academic
grant proposals• Actively pursue new funding opportunities, partnering with
development staff • Attend and provide support to appropriate campus events • Develop and implement targeted advocacy campaigns and
stakeholder communications on social, online and print media• Integrate the University’s brand strategy in outreach and
communications work• Hire, train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff and consultants
to ensure effective implementation of departmental strategies and meet established goals
• Ensure compliance with required city, state and federal disclosures • Develop, track and report on departmental metrics of success• Recruit, train and manage volunteers in advocacy and community
engagement• Provide support and mentorship to students in advocacy
and government relations
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the work of this
position • Ten years of progressively responsible experience in
government and community relations• Evidence of the ability to communicate and collaborate
effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies• Ability to understand and advance the University’s brand
strategy • Superior written and verbal communication skills in
English• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and an array of admin-
istrative computing systems on a Windows platform• Ability to accommodate occasional business travel and
occasional weekend, early-morning and evening hours
