Description of duties: The incumbent will partic-ipate as a member of an expanding research teamapplying molecular techniques to investigate the mi-crobial ecology of the mammalian intestinal tract.Specific duties include phylotype, metagenomic, andculture-based analyses of swine intestinal microbiotaunder different dietary, antibiotic, and host animalinfluences.The position is within the Pre-Harvest Food Safety

and Enteric Diseases Research Unit. The scientists inthis unit investigate interactions of enteropathogenicand nonpathogenic bacteria with each other, with in-testinal tissues of their animal host, and with the farmenvironment. Research in the unit generates interven-tion strategies to reduce the prevalence of human food-borne pathogens, animal pathogens, and antibioticresistant bacteria in livestock.National Animal Disease Center (NADC) is the pre-

mier research institute within the USDA for studyingdiseases of large animals and is undergoing a $500 mil-lion upgrade of laboratory facilities. NADC resourcesfor the position include flow cytometry, laser micro-dissection microscopy, a nucleic acid center operat-ing Roche FLX and AP3100 sequencers, an electronmicroscopy/histology facility, and substantial bioin-formatics and animal support. NADC researchers alsohave access to computer and bioinformatics resour-ces and collaborations at nearby Iowa State Univer-sity. At the NADC, scientists are able to investigatemicrobe-host interactions at every level: molecular,microbe, and natural host. Qualification requirements:A Ph.D. in microbiology or a related field is requiredfor this position. Minimum requirements include a MD, PhD, or MD/PhD withminimum of five years of experience as an associate professoror equivalent. We are seeking a Chair for Cleveland Clinic’s Department of BiomedicalEngineering.
