farmers then.”

Vision
Mission
AN INSTITUTE WITH DISTINCT IDENTITY
PADMA VIBHUSHAN
DR. VERGHESE KURIEN(1921-2012)
Since its establishment in December 1979, IRMA has come a long
way. IRMA has emerged as a premier center for learning, training,
and research in the field of rural management. While thousands of
business schools in India strive to prepare managers for mainstream
business enterprises, only a few institutions, IRMA being the pioneer
among those, have continued to serve “under-managed” rural
organizations using both business and development approaches.
IRMA has expanded its outreach to a diverse set of organisations
keen to contribute to the script of transformational story of Rural
India.
While operating within her core philosophy, IRMA has striven to
promote partnership between rural farm & non-farm producers and
committed professional managers as the basis for sustainable rural
transformation. Achievements of IRMA are reflected in her distinct
identity and work that IRMA’s founders, collaborators, faculty,
alumni, and students are proud of.
IRMA’s PGDRM is approved by AICTE and recognised as equivalent
to Masters degree by AIU. NBA accreditation for five years in 2017
has strengthened IRMA's pursuit for excellence in management
education.
Even though India has rapidly developed over the decades, a majority of its population continues to be
dependent on agricultural and rural livelihoods. India has achieved self-sufficiency in major agricultural
commodities like cereals and milk. Organizing milk producers under institutions owned and controlled by them
and linking them to the market, led to remarkable growth in milk production, which helped us in not only
becoming self-sufficient in milk but also become the world's largest milk producer.
Much of this would not have been possible without the professionals that helped these institutions to grow.
Recognizing the need for an exclusive institution, Dr Verghese Kurien was instrumental in setting up Institute of
Rural Management, Anand (IRMA), to fulfill the mission of developing a cadre of professional managers who
would serve not only producer institutions but also other development organizations that would help in all
round development of our rural areas.
Over the years, many of IRMA's graduates in the discipline of rural management have become leaders and
CEOs, while others are performing critical roles in their organizations. Their contributions have helped millions
of our farmers and rural households in a myriad of ways.
With its vast experience in developing human resources for the rural sector and credibility of its alumni and
faculty, IRMA is uniquely placed to deliver on its mandate as envisaged by its founders.
As a responsive and responsible institution, it will be IRMA's duty to prepare the next generation of
professionals and equip them to handle the emerging challenges and opportunities and to build and strengthen
resilient and sustainable institutions to serve rural India.
On behalf of IRMA, I invite all those who wish to bring about change in our country to choose a career in the
discipline of rural management, like many post-graduates of IRMA who have contributed substantially in
bringing about transformation in lives of large sections of the rural community.

MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN
Shri Dilip Rath Chairman|IRMA
1
“All the tools are with us, in our Hands, to effect the transformation of our predominantly rural society.
Never has an elite had such an opportunity.”
- Dr. Verghese Kurien
I reiterate the thoughts of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who not only envisioned the idea of IRMA but also translated
the same idea into an institution that continues to stand ‘committed to change’ in the 38th year of its existence.
The idea of IRMA continues to hold its relevance in constantly changing world because of its promise of a
unique combination of management education and distinct purpose of social change. Knowledge and skills are
the traditional outcomes of any mainstream management education, we go beyond these and transform the
bright, young and enthusiastic individuals into active agents, who are capable of using the management
knowledge and skills towards the specific goals of rural transformation through both market and non-market
approaches. I am delighted to introduce you our program - Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management
(PGDRM).
The PGDRM curriculum provides a wide spectrum of high quality courses with a greater focus on experiential
learning. The curriculum comprises four distinct yet mutually supportive segments – classroom, village field
work, development internship and management internship. The curriculum is highly acclaimed and approved by
the reputed assessors and accreditation bodies. Furthermore, PGDRM graduates are known to carve a distinct
reputation in their professional environment for their empathy, brilliance, commitment and integrity.
I invite you to be part of this one-of-a-kind program and become an active agent that continually strives to
bring rural prosperity.

.....the best thing he (Dr. V Kurien) left behind was his idea of IRMA. IRMA should use every convocation to revive and reflect over the work of that exceptional man. Hidden in his legacy is the idea of IRMA that is even more relevant today than it was then.........I share six thoughts for you to mull over. These are; create a vibrant and nurturing eco-system around you, never let p e r fe c t i o n b e t h e e n e my o f excellence, never let excellence be the enemy of good, respect and cherish productivity, manage by demanding performance from co-workers but also matching it by hand-holding and support.
