Introduction
As an educational institution that strives to prepare students for successful careers, it is important to continuously evaluate the post-graduation status of Northwest Missouri State University’s graduates. Career Services surveyed the previous academic year graduates and organized the data to provide Northwest stakeholders with a near accurate view of “first destination” employment and continuing education statistics. The data reported is six months after graduation (industry standard).
Methodology
Information CollectedGraduates are initially asked to verify general demographic information. All changes are noted in the University’s database software for future interac-tions with them as alumni clients. In the second section of the survey, candidates share their post-graduation status (employed, continuing education, seeking employment or other). If the graduate indicates an employed status, he or she is asked to indicate the job title, name and address of employer and starting salary. Graduates continuing their education are asked to disclose the program of study and institution they plan to attend. The “other” category includes individuals actively choosing to neither seek employment nor continue their education. These graduates are frequently participating in post-graduation internships. Career Services continually attempts to contact all “seeking” to offer job search assistance. The final section of the survey is a collection point for the Alumni Office. The graduate self reports each activity or organization he or she was involved in while attending Northwest.
Data Collection MethodThe placement information contained herein was obtained through an extensive six-month process. The process was initiated prior to “cap & gown” pick-up with an email asking graduates to complete an online survey. A hardcopy document is available at "cap & gown" and supplemented with another email to on-line only graduates and those not participating in the graduation ceremony. For those graduates not captured at commencement and for those who had previously indicated they were seeking employment, a follow-up email is sent at four months. If no response is received by six-months post graduation an effort is made to connect via two telephone attempts. An email is also sent to the faculty advisor in the event the new graduate has shared post-graduation data with him. At this time, any students not responding are not calculated into the report.
Data AnalysisUndergraduate and Master degree data were analyzed separately. The data is further divided by college, department and major. Totals are calculated for each major, department and college for the entire academic year. In accordance with FERPA guidelines, graduate responses are reported without disclosing the individual’s identity.

Art Chris Graves is awesome. Wouldn't recommend taking a full load of ALL art courses. Create every piece knowing that you want to add it to your portfolio to impress employers.
Art Don't hold back!
Art Expand expectations for jobs and career.
Art Get internships early!
Biology/Psychology Apply to physician assistant schools early!
Biology/Psychology Use resume critique!
Biology/Psychology & Psychology Stay open to opportunities, and strive for the best. Utilize friends, family, and faculty when networking. Visit Career Services when you need assistance.
Biology: Cell/Molecular Emph Don't wait until sophomore year; start networking and looking for internships freshman year.
Biology: General Biol Emphasis Look in to Grad programs & jobs your junior year.
Biology: General Biol Emphasis Work hard. Studying will pay off, build resume. School is everything. Great in school=great job. Great work ethic.
Biology: General Biol Emphasis You may be unsure of how competitive your science classes are. I can tell you that Northwest provides quality classes; I'm excelling at a top 15 graduate school.
Biology: Zoology Emphasis Internships and Volunteering are really important!
Business Education Had a GREAT 4 years.
Business Technology Know what you want to do; have a focus.
Business Technology Expand your horizons, things aren't always how you think.
Business Technology Must have higher than a 3.0 GPA if you want to be an Accountant
Chemistry Work hard. Studying will pay off, build resume. School is everything. Great in school=great job. Great work ethic.
Chemistry A class that focused on career opportunities for chemistry majors would be fantastic.
Clinical Laboratory Sciences Hospitals accept you a year in advance. Advertise the program better.
Computer Science Do more internships must learn in the real world ** more important than school...get results
Computer Science Look into other languages & do in depth projects
English Education Do everything you can to get to know the principal of your student teaching school!
Geography & Psychology I've enjoyed every moment here at Northwest. I entered Northwest as an undeclared student. I was able to quickly wrap up my general education requirements. I can remember sitting in a general education course that led me to one of my double majors- geography. Geography is a broad field that allows the student to take away many skills. However, geography wasn't my only interest. I had another passion psychology. Psychology was my minor until I decided why not do a double major? With the help of my advisors I've accomplished so much. My advice to all students is take the time to visit your professors during their office hours. Get to know these individuals, they are here to help. I cannot thank Dr. Matthew Engel and Dr. April Haberyan enough for all the encouragement and advice they have given me over the past years while here at Northwest. Northwest Missouri State University has become my family. I truly cannot believe graduation is here.
Geology: Environmental Don't wait to look for graduate school funding!

Major(s) Response to: "We welcome your comments or suggestions for new graduates seeking a job with your major in your field."
History My Masters degree does not relate to my major- find your passion and go for it!
IDM: Computer Sci Programming Get an internship!
IDM: Visual Imaging Chris Graves is awesome. Wouldn't recommend taking a full load of ALL art courses. Create every piece knowing that you want to add it to your portfolio to impress employers.
IDM: Visual Imaging Make a good resume, network, attend career fairs, pick a good internship.
IDM: Visual Imaging Start internship search early!
IDM: Visual Imaging Try to get two internships. One that's on campus and one that is off campus. Also, take summer classes, that is how I graduated in 3 and a half years.
Instru Music Educ/Non Piano Gain experience in both instrumental and vocal even if you are double-majoring.
Marine Biology Definitely seek an internship prior to graduation. Experience makes all the difference!
Marine Biology Take advantage of Career Services and be involved- use all your resources given.
Mathematics Education Take opportunities to internship through NW
Music It is hard to find a position within music; be prepared to accept a job outside of music.
Music My goal was always education and teaching music. The summer after my junior year, I realized teaching is not what I wanted to do, but I was too close to the end of my degree to change my major. After a lot of thought and consideration, I decided to pursue Target as a career. I have worked for Target for five years and have always enjoyed working there. After completing the interview process, I was offered a job in February, leaving me three grueling months in Maryville.
Philosophy Go with your heart and not the hearts of others.
Political Science Get an internship.
Social Science Be flexible, you may have to take a job you don't want initially to get your foot in the door.
Social Science Be prepared to fill out a lot of applications- keep an open mind.
Social Science The B.S. in Social Science Education is incredibly demanding but highly rewarding. The classes are appropriately challenging with professors who are encouraging and expectant. I would suggest this major to anyone who eagerly awaits challenges, has a passion for social studies, and, most importantly, has the desire to guide young people in a successful future.
Social Science The College of Edu. does not give you a very good road map. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions and to jump through unforeseen hoops. Thankfully the Northwest name helps to seperate us from the rest of the pack.
Spanish Study Abroad
Speech/Theatre Education Get as many internships as you can.
Vocal Music Educ/Voice Use Northwest opportunities such as resume critiques; it takes fifteen minutes and will impact the rest of your life.
Wildlife Ecol & Conservation Make sure you're ready to move right after graduation.

Business Management & Marketing Graduate!

Business Management & Marketing I obtained a second interview after an on-campus mock interview. After that second interview, I was offered a job with Cerner. Elementary Education All of my references helped in getting my current job.

Elementary Education Don't give up! Keep sending applications!
Elementary Education Education Expo landed me the job.
Elementary Education Go to class!
Elementary Education Hang in there! Career Services did a wonderful job getting me to this point.
Elementary Education If you go to big city schools, be prepared for different interview styles.
Elementary Education Keep up with studies because it is hard to climb out of that hole. Also, look for jobs that are in demand when choosing a major.
Elementary Education Mock Interviews help a lot!
Elementary Education Practice interviewing
Elementary Education Specify common course!
Elementary Education Try international student teaching, very life changing experience.
Elementary Education Try to student teach at a school you would really want to work at and get involved with all of the opportunities available. This really helps get your foot in the door! I feel so blessed to be teaching at such a great school next year!
Elementary Education Utilize any mock interview opportunities! I only had one mock interview prior to having my first real interview and the preparation provided by the single mock interview in itself was helpful. Starting the year before you graduate is probably best. Additionally, the preparation for interviews and specific requirements for individual school districts that was provided by the School & Society course was so worthwhile, beneficial, and relevant to all I would come to experience.

Major(s) Response to: "We welcome your comments or suggestions for new graduates seeking a job with your major in your field."
Psychology I would begin thinking about post-graduation plans beginning the summer after your sophomore year. I also HIGHLY recommend taking the course Career Paths and Preparations either your sophomore or junior year - it is a very beneficial course and will help with any questions you may have about plans after graduation. Utilize Career Services and their resources! Their resume critique was very helpful and reassuring.
Psychology If you are going to graduate school, apply early.
Psychology Look for opportunities for experience as a sophomore or junior, don't wait until it is too late!
Psychology Northwest is an awesome place to learn. I love my major, psychology. The professors and classes are great. The best thing about Northwest is the people. There is always someone new to meet and everyone is really friendly.
Psychology/Sociology Being able to have my resume critiqued and doing a mock interview both with Mrs. Schneider certainly prepared me for a couple of job interviews. Also, Mrs. Schneider's presentation to our Career Path Class was invaluable. Thank you again for all your hard work!!
Psychology/Sociology Get application done way in advance for grad-programs
Psychology/Sociology Get relevant work experience.
Psychology/Sociology Recommend doing an internship.
Psychology/Sociology Take the GRE and apply early!
Recreation: Rec & Park Mgt ANYBODY: Keep an open eye and be prepared to learn anything
Recreation: Rec & Park Mgt Make sure you love it!
Recreation: Therapeutic Rec Apply for internships and jobs early! Resume Critiques=take advantage!
Recreation: Therapeutic Rec Double check with advisors to guarantee late certification.
Recreation: Therapeutic Rec & English When I was graduating high school, I had this idea in my head that college would be a four year experience that would change my life. Six years later, I have come to realize that I was only half right. These past years have shaped and defined the meaning of my life and the hopes for my future. Graduating does not mean leaving everything you have come to know and love behind; we take away experiences and memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. No matter where the future takes us, we are Bearcats now and forever.
BT - Other Keep looking forward!
Child and Family Studies Be prepared
Child and Family Studies I came to Northwest as an Early Childhood major and switched to Family and Consumer Sciences in my Sophomore year. I found it easy to switch and the transition was fairly easy since a lot of my Education classes substituted in. Northwest is great when it comes to helping their students do the best that they can and the FCS department was like my second family we were all so close. I have had a wonderful experience at Northwest and do not regret choosing to come to Maryville for college. Go online to Missouri Government website to look for jobs. EAS program is very helpful.
Family & Consumer Sci Educ Don't be picky, pick the first one that comes.
Family & Consumer Sci Educ Use Career Services and all the great services they provide.

MBA Take advantage of the opportunities Career Services offers! Career Services allows students the opportunity to develop relationships with employers early on in their college career. When you go to apply for jobs and internships later on, this relationship is really important. If it weren't for the opportunities Career Services gave me, I wouldn't have my job today.
MBA Take full advantage of Career Services, they are very helpful in being prepared for contacting companies. SIFE is a fantastic organization to be a part of, not only do you gain a lot of experience that can prepare you for the work environment but also gain great connections to companies all across the United States that aren't at the Career Fairs at Northwest. I was able to make connections and find my job with Bimbo Bakeries USA in Clifton Park, NY through a SIFE Career Fair.
MBA Take multimedia courses.
MBA Wasn't able to get elective last trimester because of class rotation, took it at Pitt State

Applied Health Sciences Didn't feel prepared to know what I am qualified to do.
Applied Health Sciences The most beneficial and rewarding experience in my program was the internship. I interned at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO. I worked as a Wellness Specialist intern for Heartland's Wellness Connections department. It was an educational experience and I do not think I would have enjoyed the program as much without it.
