What About Georgia?
Move to the Cities
Georgia’s changing economy urged
people to move into the cities-
Approximately 60% of Georgia’s
population lived in urban areas and
40% lived in rural areas.
William Berry Hartsfield
Was Atlanta’s longest serving mayor(1937-1961)and
known as Atlanta’s “father of aviation” because he
believed that an airport for Atlanta would be a key to
the city’s economic prosperity.
Hartsfield Airport- had a positive impact on Georgia’s
economy and is one of the busiest airports in the
world.
(Delta Airlines has its headquarters in Atlanta).
Under his leadership as mayor, Atlanta did not
experience the unrest and violence that Little Rock
and New Orleans did during integration, which earned
Atlanta the nickname “The City Too Busy to Hate.”

Progressive Leadership
Ellis Arnall elected governor in 1942
As a governor, Arnall could not have been
more different from GA’s previous governor,
Eugene Talmadge. (He was the first governor
to serve a 4 year term.)
Energetic and progressive
10 Point Program adopted within days of his
election...
championed education by restoring the
accreditation to Georgia’s schools &
reformed prison (penal) system
abolished poll tax
lowered voting age to 18 GA was 1st state to do this
erased state debt (in the millions) without
raising taxes.
Criticized because he believed black
citizens should be allowed to vote in
primaries.

People Move to the suburbs
Agriculture Changes
AGRICULTURE CHANGES
Demand for cotton fell
Peanuts, soybeans, pecans, and corn were planted in
place of cotton
Post WWII, GA leading agricultural product was
poultry
Diversified Georgia agriculture makes Georgia more
marketable across the U.S. and brings in more $$
Tractors and other motorized implements improved
the efficiency of Georgia’s farmers in that a single
farmer could work a larger plot of land.

Developments Overseas
United States prospers after WWII
American Pride at an all time high
However, countries abroad are also
desiring power economically, socially,
and technologically.
The ways that these countries are trying to
achieve this power begins to scare the
United States leadership.
Start of the “Red Scare”

Fear Abroad
Communism
A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single dictator or party holds all of the power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people.
Containment
United States foreign policy introduced at the start of the Cold War, aimed at stopping the spread of Communism and keeping it 'contained' and isolated within its current borders, otherwise the 'domino effect' would occur, where if one nation became Communist, the surrounding ones would follow.
