The National Citizen Service is aimed at those aged 16 & 17 year olds and offers young people a summer of new challenges. The main delivery is a four-week programme incorporating two individual week residentials followed by planning and delivering of a youth led community project. Young Bristol is working as part of a regional consortium headed up by Reed In Partnership to deliver the NCS programme and we will be engaging over 180 young people in Bristol. Contract Terms/Length: This is a fixed-term post from 8th May – 31st August 2018 Responsible to: Wave Leader | NCS Programme Lead | Programmes Manager

Dates: We have 4 “waves” of programmes each consisting of 2 weeks of residential, 60 hours of social action and a fantastic Graduation event!

Wave 1Phase 1 = 2nd – 6th JulyPhase 2 = 9th – 13th JulyPhase 3 = 16th – 29th July

Wave 2Phase 1 = 9th – 13th July Phase 2 = 16th – 20th July Phase 3 = 23rd – 5th Aug

Wave 3Phase 1 = 16th – 20th July Phase 2 = 23rd – 27th July Phase 3 = 30th – 12th Aug

Wave 4Phase 1 = 23rd – 27th July Phase 2 = 30th – 3rd Aug Phase 3 = 6th – 19th Aug

Phase 4/Graduation is Sunday 9th September. Feel free to pop by and celebrate with us!

You will only be required to work one “wave”. Therefore if there are any dates listed above that may conflict with any other commitments, please bring this to our attention in your application form.

Programme Format:

Phase 1 = Mon – Fri: Residential – Indoor accommodation near Brecon BeaconsPhase 2 = Mon – Fri: Residential – Indoor at University of BristolPhase 3 = Will require flexibility, weekdays/weekends and some evenings depending on group needs. But will primarily consist of Mon – Fri (P3.1 is the Planning stage & P3.2 is the delivery stage. Young people must complete 30 hours of each, 60 hours total.) Phase 4 = Graduation event.

This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS Check and completion of the initial staff training prior programme delivery.

Job DescriptionMAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

• Working under the guidance of your wave leader and alongside another NCS Leader, you will be responsible for up to 15 young people in a team; to provide the supervision, motivation and inspiration to help your team succeed and enjoy the NCS experience.

• To keep your team of young people focussed and on track with the programme.

• Collaboratively delivery an engaging and exciting evening programme throughout the residential phases of the journey.

• On occasion, lead on the delivery of developmental sessions for the young people. (Resources and training provided)

• To assist in the delivery of activities for participants, and to be responsible for ensuring that young people complete the required amount of hours in their social action planning & delivery phases to ensure they are eligible for graduation.

• To journey alongside the young people through all sections of the NCS programme.

• To resolve minor issues on a daily basis; to ensure that the Programmes Manager and/or Chief Executive is aware of all safeguarding issues.

• Facilitate the empowerment of young people and enable them to plan & deliver a social action project.

• Complete initial staff training • Any other duties commensurate to salary and duties

Targets:

• Successfully lead your team of young people to complete the NCS programme

• Ensure the safety and welfare of young people at all times• To complete all necessary monitoring & evaluation on time and accurately• Monitor and ensure the successful delivery of your groups’ Social Action

Projects • To record/capture evidence of the NCS journey• Ensure the young people complete the necessary amount of contact hours to

graduate • Ensure each young person has the best summer yet!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Welfare:

• To ensure group harmony and facilitate the group dynamics, tackling any problemsand resolving confrontation.

• To refer appropriate welfare issues to the Programmes Manager and/or Chief Executive and ensure the immediate welfare needs of the young people are met.• To ensure all personal information regarding young people is kept confidentially inaccordance with data protection requirements.• To ensure the safeguarding of young people is paramount and report any issues tothe Programmes Manager and/or Chief Executive • To report any concerns / incidents to the Programmes Manager and/or Chief Executive within 24 hours.• To administer basic First Aid, if required, in line with Training and record as below. • To complete the Incident/accident report form within 24 hours of any incident/accident taking place.• To assist in the administration of medication for young people if required/appropriate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Cont):

NCS activities:• To provide support during NCS to your allocated team, acting as their mentor and firstport of call for any queries.• To ensure appropriate video / photographic footage is taken to record your teams’activities. You will be provided with a small camera.• To ensure all activities are undertaken in the spirit of the NCS Social Bond.• To ensure young people observe rules pertaining to appropriate behaviour andconduct at all times as laid out in the NCS Social Bond.• To complete the daily NCS Attendance Register and report this to Programmes Manager.• To uphold and positively contribute to the credible reputation of Young Bristol and the ethos

of NCS, over the course of all activities associated with the programme.• To take action if inappropriate behaviour happens (procedures will be coveredduring training). • To ensure the evening programme is engaging for the young people and relevant to the NCS ethos.

Residential events:• To provide support and team leadership for the young people, facilitating andleading on occasion their day / night activities.• To be an active member and ambassador of NCS, taking part in activities whereappropriate and demonstrating a ‘joining in’ team spirit and ‘can do’ positiveattitude.

Guided Reflection:• To ensure that your group members share NCS experiences and facilitate the dailyprocess of Guided Reflection.• To facilitate your group through end of week & end of programme guided reflections in the methods covered in your initial training.

Social Action projects:• To facilitate the delivery of successful Social Action Projects, in consultation with thelocal communities, with support from the Programmes Manager if needed.• To ensure that you and your team adhere to all Risk Assessment protocols, observingall Health and Safety requirements.• To produce written risk assessments (and ensure Dynamic adjustments are made on the day) for any events that your team may decide to hold – This MUST be signed off by the Programmes Manager prior to the event taking place. • To ensure any fundraising is done in accordance with collection licences providedand all money donated is given to the intended charity.

Training:• To attend the initial training events including First Aid, Safeguarding, Risk Assessments, Guided Reflection, Team Building and more. •Dates of the initial training will be dependent on the wave you are working.

Recruitment Day:

• Shortlisted applicants will need to attend our recruitment day on Sunday 22nd April 2018. • The purpose of the day is to have candidates working together in a team, taking on the leadership role in scenarios you may be faced with in the role as a NCS Leader. The day will consist of various group activities, scenarios, presentation on the programme & role you play, and an informal meeting with a member of out team. • On this day we will ask you to bring along various documents of identification in order to complete a DBS check. You will be instructed upon successful shortlisting of the exact items you will need. • Full details on the day will be given to successful shortlisted applicants in due course.

Person specificationEssential

Over the age of 18

Be a positive role model Experience of youth work and youth volunteering, preferably including

intense team residential activities Experience of providing support to staff members and volunteers Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of good

organisational skills An in-depth understanding of good practice in relation to Child

Protection and Health and Safety. Competence in the use of IT packages (e.g. word processing, email,

data entry). Ability to work effectively and enthusiastically in a team situation and

on own initiative. Commitment to the development, understanding and implementation

of equalities and anti-discriminatory practice. Experience of partnership working. Be flexible with work hours

Desirable Experience of enabling the active involvement of young people in

decision making processes. Have taken part, and graduated an NCS programme

The Package

Salary: £14,625 full time equivalent – Pro Rata @ £7.50 per hour for 165 hours Total.

Term: This is a fixed-term post from 8th May – 31st August 2018

Probationary: The post is subject to an eight week probationary period.

Training: Young Bristol provides in house training for all staff in order to prepare the individual for the role.

Line Manager: Wave Leader | NCS Programme Lead | Programmes Manager

Location: You will be based at our Central Bristol office at The Station, Silver St, BS1 2AG, and will be expected to work at locations within and outside Bristol as the project requires. Including 1 week residential away from Bristol.

Relocation: There is no relocation package for this post.

Working hours: The post will require a build up of hours as detailed & dates will depend on the “Wave” (as is in the post details section) you are allocated:

Equivalent to 8 days (maybe more if shorter days) (62 Hours – See programme format)
