TYALGUM CUP CYCLE RACE 9 APRIL

The final $3.6m stage of the Kennedy Drive upgrade in Tweed Heads West has started.

Over the next 14 weeks, weather permitting, Council will:• add an additional traffic lane on the southern side of Kennedy Drive to

achieve four lanes (two in either direction) from Limosa Road to about 300 metres east of the bridge, tapering to two lanes (one in either direction) on the approach and exit from the two-laned bridge

• construct kerb and gutter• reconstruct maximum-width driveways for vehicles to

safely enter and exit 60km/h traffic lanes• reconstruct footpaths• upgrade stormwater drains and construct additional

pits to let surface water get away quickly, and• upgrade and add contingency to the water reticulation system, duplicating the

main line with the installation of a 200mm main and a 150mm main on either side of Kennedy Drive, allowing the removal of cross service connections. In the first few days of the project, crews will be working off the roadway to

replace a pipeline that crosses under Kennedy Drive. By Wednesday, they will begin to bring the new pipeline across the road. To do this, they will barrier off half the roadway and squeeze two lanes of traffic on to the other half. They will then work to the centreline before switching the traffic to complete the other half of the cross connection.

By next week, the temporary traffic lanes will become semi permanent, with Council working behind the safety barriers.

At all times, there will be one lane of traffic in either direction with traffic management in place to keep the traffic flowing through the worksite at 40km/h.

Motorists are again urged to sign up online to receive regular email updates on the progress of the works and sms alerts direct to their mobile phones when incidents occur that may result in longer than acceptable delays.

By signing up to the updates, motorists will have the information they need to decide whether to travel via Kennedy Drive or take the alternate route via Bilambil Road and Terranora Road, which may add up to 20 minutes to a trip but save the frustration of waiting in traffic queues.

You can sign up at yoursaytweed.com.au/kennedy-driveAll businesses along Kennedy Drive remain open and Council is appealing to

customers to continue to support these traders during the works.

Work begins this week on the construction of a new playground and facilities at Wilson Park in East Banora.

The upgrade, scheduled to take eight weeks, will include play equipment, shelters, picnic facilities and landscaping.

Much of the original park was removed to make way for a realignment of the Sexton Hills bypass for the Pacific Highway. The site was reinstated as a land bridge and Council has been in consultation with the East Banora community about how the site should be developed as a public space.

In response to community feedback, the public tennis court will be retained. For more information visit www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/ParksAndGardens

Growing interest in Ag StrategyLast week’s release of the draft Tweed Sustainable Agriculture Strategy for public exhibition has been welcomed by local farming representatives, who say they eagerly look forward to the implementation of the strategy’s actions.

Tyalgum organics grower Rod Bruin, Murwillumbah butcher Peter Smith and Tweed River Cane Growers President Robert Hawken met Council’s Program Leader – Sustainable Agriculture, Eli Szandala, at the Murwillumbah Farmers Markets last week to discuss the draft strategy, which will be on public exhibition until 11 May.

Mr Szandala said the draft’s release followed several years of consultation with the community, analysis of the range of issues and opportunities affecting Tweed agricultural.

“That feedback and analysis has helped develop a practical and locally relevant strategy with targeted actions to bring real improvements to a sustainable agriculture industry,” he said.

Mr Bruin said the strategy was essential to enhance the long-term viability of farming in Tweed Shire.

“Without a strategy you have nothing to guide you forward. I’m hopeful this constructive framework will lead to a lot of benefits and progress in the future,” he said.

His comments were supported by Mr Smith, who said the key was having a vision and direction for the future – then effectively implementing that vision.

“It can’t just be a talkfest. The actions identified in the strategy need to be followed through to fruition, by Council and the agricultural sector,” he said.

Mr Hawken said he was great to see Council and the strategy were focused on assisting establish agricultural industry in the Tweed, as well new ventures.

“It’s important that long-term traditional industries are also encouraged through the strategy,” he said.

The draft Strategy is on exhibition at the Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah Council offices and online at www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/OnExhibition until 11 May 2016. For further information contact Eli Szandala on (02) 6670 2599.
