On behalf of bicyclists around the nation, we thank you for your leadership on the Postal Innovation Act. This Act ensures that when postal vehicles are upgraded they will be equipped with crash avoidance solutions that prevent injuries to people who bike and walk. Postal service vehicles regularly share the road with people who bike and walk, delivering packages to cul-de-sacs and schools.

It is vitally important that the safety of postal vehicles is assured through the adoption of crash avoidance technologies. A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that crash avoidance systems that can detect and react to bicyclists could mitigate or prevent up to 47 percent of vehicle-bicycle crashes and 54 percent of bicyclist fatalities caused by common vehicle-bicycle crashes. Thanks to the Postal Innovation Act, the Postal Service will be able to realize the long-term savings that come from avoiding these crashes and tragedies.
