Aaron Peck chAIR Bedsheets, fiberglass, epoxy 54”L x 54”W x 36”H I was inspired by a dream where a man jumps out a window through the drapes and as he fell I could only see the drapes wrapping his body as he twisted in the air. This drew my attention to how expressive a single sheet can be if given the right form. This chair is an exploration in creating the illusion of a real volume given a single plane of fabric.

Ale Palandjoglou Ramified armchair Poplar bendy ply and red oak veneer 28”L x 26”W x 29”H The seat is elegantly supported from the edges of the branching legs, creating a bridge between the front and the back legs. The ramification of the legs not only split in two directions, with the same angle to each side generating a consistent flow in the legs, but also creates the armrest. Interesting triangular windows become visible between leg-armrest-seat

Becca del Monte Ribcage white oak, steel, wool fabric 39”L x 33”W x 35”H This chair is intended to create comfort without mass - the steel spine makes a frame for the wood ribs, which are bent into springy forms that give under a person's weight. It was inspired by the process of steam bending, in which solid pieces of wood are softened with heat and then bent around a form; this creates a curve that maintains the strength of the original wood in a new shape.

Cameron Jue Slosh Chair Plywood and EVA foam 30”L x 25”W x 26”H Inspired by liquid flowing into a glass, the Slosh chair translates this dynamic form into a deceptively comfortable seat. The crests support the sitter's knees and lower back, while a trough plunging below the sitting surface catches the eye from afar and invites closer inspection.

Danya Volkov Urban Nest Fiberglass, steel 50”L x 50”W x 40”H I sought to create some sort of hideaway in a chair, a space of its own. The chair should have a sense of a boundary such that one feels enclosed and surrounded, but not impermeable such that it would be completely shut off from its surroundings. It is a nest, a retreat. According to my dictionary, "snuggery" is in fact a word, so it might very well be that as well. It should be able to be tucked into corner without attracting too much attention and yet still not exactly "fit in." It should look approachable but personal. It should appear both closed and open.

Jacobi Grillo TulipS Steel and foam internal structure. Fiberglass shell 19”L x 20”W x 34”H The TulipS came from my desire to create products that have a hidden design interest. I want the viewer to at first view the TulipS as a whole and see a beautiful and interesting form. The hidden design feature is exposed when the TulipS is viewed directly from the front and directly from the side. The front profile matches the front profile of Tulip Chair designed by Eero Saarinen. The side profile matches the side profile of the S Chair designed by Verner Panton. Combining these two famous designs has allowed me to create something completely original and only vaguely resembles the designs from which it was born.

Jason Chua Dovetail Chair Poplar and Felt 24”L x 24”W x 36”H The dovetail joint has been used for thousands of years by craftsmen who recognized its unparalleled ability to hold their pieces together. In today's fragmented and increasingly abstruse society, the simple and honest union formed by the dovetail joint can be seen as a reminder that the strongest connections are often built from the most basic of elements.

Katherine Spriggs Palo Alto Chair Welded and powder-coated steel frame, bent plywood and foam cushions. 34”L x 24”W x 32”H My design for the Palo Alto Chair was inspired by Mies Van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair. It simplifies the chair's form down to essential geometric shapes and finds a unique character by redefining the gesture of the chair legs and restyling the chair cushions. Like the Barcelona chair, my Palo Alto chair was named after the city in which it was first shown.

Kiran K. Malladi Arch Plywood, Oak Veneer, and Steel 24”L x 24”W x 24”H Arch is an exploration into and showcase of different materials and their properties. Rather than lay out meticulous drawings and annotations and force my chair to my original ideas, I started with a multitude of rough sketches and allowed the materials to inform their own paths. On other projects, I've spent a lot of time planning out my processes and doing precisely calculated computer-aided manufacturing. I was very excited to try a different approach with this chair - instead of laser-cutting, I bent plywood, instead of CNC-machining anything, I forged steel tubes, and instead of having every step planned ahead of time, I thought on my feet. To some degree, I turned over my ideas to my materials, and I worked through the rest of the complications as they arose.

Prat Ganapathy Illusion Chair 1/4" Russian Birch 21”L x 21”W x 32”H The Illusion chair masquerades as a purely aesthetic statement, but in reality it's based on aliasing video-game graphics. This chair uses the Moiré effect, which is an interference pattern made of waves or ripples that appear in closely spaced lines or finely detailed patterns. This piece is an ode to gamers who sit crouched in front of a screen, firmly gripping their controller while lost in a world more real than the one we live in... entrapped in a world that's a beautiful illusion.
