8/14/2019 poster sin city.docx
1/1
This poster immediately connotes the film noir
genre due to its almost completely monochrome
pallet. There are many layers to this poster,
however the first one is almost entirely black,
depicting the imagery of rain and thunder
dispersed among the characters. The rain is
symbolic of conflict and sin, as it has negative
connotations of sadness or anger.
The characters have been positioned to take up most room on the
poster suggesting that they all play a key role in the film and are all
intertwined. The actor Bruce Willis appears to be at the foreground
of the poster and looks larger than other characters. This may be as
he is the most well recognised out of all the other actors, or simply
suggests his role as a protagonist.
The tone of this poster
has a high amount of
action and fits well with
the film noir genre. The
almost blurred
appearance of the rain
suggests rapid
movement, as does the
'windswept'
appearance of Jessica
Alba's hair. These smallfeatures add a deeper
dimension to the poster
and make it more
exciting to look at and
therefore promote the
film.
The middle layer of this
poster also adds another
dimension to the action
tone as the smaller, faded
image of a man walking
through the city presents
an intriguing aspect to the
poster. This smaller image
is surrounded almost by a
bright white light, drawing
attention to the man's
black cloak and therefore
the connotations of sin and
danger.
The original Sin City was a series of
film-noir comics by Frank Miller. This is
particularly evident through the titling
and anchorage text. The font of 'Sin
City' is Sans Serif and is similar to
bubble writing', depicting the comic
style and typical action in books. The
red text against the black and grey
characters symbolises the bloody
themes of the film. Therefore the
poster resembles a comic book cover,
ensuring that the origins of the plot is
There is an exaggerated
affect added to the sizeof the weapon held by
Willis therefore
emphasising the
importance of violence
in the film as a means of
resolution within the
narrative. This also adds
to the comical tone of
the poster and
consequent high action.
The idea that every character is looking in a different
direction presents a disjointed and eerie tone to the poster,
and also reinforces the high level of action within the film.
However, Willis is looking down at his gun, immediately
reinforcing the use of violence as a means of resolution in
the film. Willis also particularly looks God like, due to thelow angle shot, looking up at him. This reinforces his
authority in the film and overall violent power.
