Clinical practice is completed in a variety of placements in workplace settings This programme builds on the existing knowledge and experience of the graduate nurse, gained during undergraduate study, while providing an environment that supports the acquisition of knowledge and skills in beginning nursing practice. Students are employees of health providers and attend theory blocks and/or tutorials at the polytechnic or in their workplace environments. Our aim is to ensure the provision of a qualification that provides the graduate nurse with a supportive and challenging entry to mental health and addiction nursing practice. The programme identifies and incorporates, in partnership with health care providers, the specific skills and competencies that need to be developed in relation to new entry to specialist practice (mental health and addiction) nursing. The nurse, on successful completion, is competent and able to critically incorporate best practice standards and research into mental health and addiction nursing. PROGRAMME INFORMATION HCS8316: Contemporary Mental Health and Addiction Nursing (60 credits) This course offers students the opportunity to explore the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of contemporary mental health and addictions practice within New Zealand. The student will explore socio-political and professional issues influencing mental health and addiction and how these issues relate to clinical practice. HCS8326: Professional Practice in Mental Health and Addiction Nursing (60 credits) This course is designed to provide supported entry into specialty mental health and addiction nursing through the development of confidence and competence within the professional practice setting. This programme is delivered as follows: > Theory blocks delivered at the Porirua campus > Three half day tutorials are held in a variety of geographical locations > Online/flexible learning Students of the programme will be required to: > Travel to a Whitireia campus > Travel to tutorial groups, which may at times be outside the employing organisation > Have access to a computer with broadband internet connection

Change of Scope: Applicants also need Nursing Council of New Zealand approval

International: IELTS 7.0 in each band
