It is a platform for critiquing and busting memes of today or of the times to come. The vision is to create a space that lies in the intersection between academic learning and a ‘design-free’ zone, where postgraduate students from Srishti and other institutions come together and critically engage in the act of ‘meme-busting’. In its second edition this year, we have three Open Studios, each exploring a particular theme. The students have a choice to enroll in any one of the studio and choose a particular provocation that the studio offers. The students then, over a period of four weeks work in interdisciplinary teams to actively construct their response to the chosen provocation. The construction will be shaped by a mentoring space where experts from diverse disciplines will share their insights, experiences and positions in any form, such as talks, walks, discussions, open debates, workshops, hackathons, and other formats of their choice. The student teams are encouraged to engage in these wide-ranging activities to facilitate their response-building process and take informed positions of their own. The three studios are as follows 1. OVERVIEWIndia is a land of great variety of heritage sites and many socio-cultural influences have worked over several centuries to form these wide-ranging cultural landscapes. While some practices of conservation predates the colonial era, others have been initiated only during the last few decades. One of the reasons for this delay could be that most of these practices are borrowed or adapted from elsewhere. But perhaps a more benign explanation is that heritage in India was sustained by local indigenous practices and outside management was not necessary. What led to these new practices? How was heritage interpreted before it was subjected to conservation, alteration or demolition? Who decides, what is best for heritage?Heritage in India today faces a more complex situation than ever before. Education and practice are in a flux because the context, for heritage interpretation and intervention, is constantly under transformation. The socio-political and economic changes in India have impacted the state of heritage management. Indian heritage has at times been a subject of collective decision and at others driven by individual choices. We envision that this studio ‘Contesting Heritage’ will be an open platform for critical reflections on the tangible, the intangible and the natural heritage of India. This approach would help expand or redefine creative practices in the fields of heritage and urban design. This studio is also a part of the collaborative between the UNESCO Chair at Srishti and ICOMOS India.

BROAD SCHEDULEFirst week will be dedicated towards introductions & input sessions from Cumulus Conference at Srishti. Second and third week will be a mix of site visits and interactive sessions with various professionals. Participation in the ICOMOS GA 2017 and final response building is scheduled for the fourth week, right before the culminating student conference.

SITESA ‘site’ is more than a geographical location, especially for critical design practice. It can be a productive entry point to explore a wide-range of questions. The sites we have curated are a starting point for these explorations. It should be noted that intangible processes of natural and cultural environments are of equal significance as the tangible aspects of place-making.Student participants from Srishti have been suggested to consider the following sites to explore their provocations: Jew Town (Kochi), Hampi (Karnataka), Vernacular of Southern India, Jog Falls (Western Ghats), and Amaravathi (Andhra Pradesh). Participants from outside of Srishti are suggested to pick a suitable site of their choice, after consultations with their designated mentor.

OVERVIEWThe 2015 UN General Assembly adopted a set of 17 interlinked Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a continuation ofof the global sustainability agenda previously enshrined in the Millennium Development Goals. Spanning the next 15 years, up to 2030, these goals aim to guide disruptive development agenda, including growing global urbanization, while respectinghuman and environmental factors like social justice, economic equity, environmental security which would provide a holistic approach for a sustainable future.Though the SDGs have been framed after a long process of participation by various stakeholder groups, including Governments, responsibility to realize the Goals are with countries that are member states to the UN. For India, it is imperative to contextualize the SDGs and build a dialogue with national/regional/local goals, aspirations and strategies in order to effectively achieve the set targets. This studio will focus on the role of art and design in critically evaluating the SDGs, innovating with implementation strategies and reimagining them for the Indian context.
