The Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine wasfounded by a group ofLondon consultants afterthe First World War to assist postgraduates,particularly those coming to London from theCommonwealth, to pursue their studies. TheFellowship first published the PostgraduateMedical Journal to give information aboutlectures, conferences and courses and to provide amonthly review of all branches ofmedicine.

Typescripts Two complete copies should be sent to theEditor, Postgraduate Medical Journal, 1O Duchess Street,London WIN 3AB. Papers must be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of paper not larger than A4(297mm x 210mm), with a 5 cm margin. The first page ofthe typescript should bear the names of the author(s) andthe name and address of the laboratory or institutionwhere the work has been carried out, in addition to thetitle of the paper. The full address of the principal authorto whom proofs will be sent should be given as a footnote,as should any permanent changes of address and/orappointment. A short (running) title of not more than 45characters should be given. All pages should benumbered, including the title page.
The prncipal author must ensure that any co-authorslisted agree to submission of the typescript. Any writtenor illustrative material which has been or will be publishedelsewhere must be duly acknowledged and accompaniedby the written consent of the authors and publishersconcerned.
Arrangement Papers should be divided into: (a) Titlepage, (b) Summary, (c) Introduction, (d) Materials andmethods, (e) Results, (f) Discussion, (g) Acknowled-gements, (h) References, (i) Tables, (j) Figures andcaptions. The summary should not exceed 250 words andshould state concisely what was done, the main findingsand how the work was interpreted. In all sections of thepaper numbered paragraphs should be avoided if at allpossible.Style Abbreviations and symbols must be standard andSI units used throughout. Whenever possible drugsshould be given their approved generic name. Where aproprietary (brand) name must be used, it should beginwith a capital letter. Statistical analyses must explain themethods used. The use of footnotes is not permitted.Single quotation marks should be used and words to beitalicized should be underlined. The Concise OxfordEnglish Dictionary is used as a reference for all spellingand hyphenation. -ize spellings are preferred. Statisticsand measurement should be always be given in figures, i.e.Omin, 20h, 5ml, except where the number begins the
sentence.
References In the text, reference to other work shouldtake the form (Alcock & Brown, 1983) or '...Alcock &Brown (1983) showed that. . .'. Where reference is made toa work by three or more authors, give the first authorsname followed by et al., e.g. (Smith et al., (1982) or 'Smithet al. (1982) reported ...' References to 'unpublishedobservations' or 'personal communications' should bementioned in the text but not included in the list ofreferences. If several papers by the same author(s) andfrom the same year are cited, lower case letters a, b, c, etc.,should be inserted immediately following the date.All references should be brought together at the end of thepaper in alphabetical order giving (a) name(s) and initialsof all the author(s), "et al." not acceptable here; (b) yearof publication in parentheses; (c) title of paper in itsoriginal form; (d) title of journal in full, underlined; (e)
volume number, underlined; number of first page ofarticle. References to books and monographs shouldinclude (a) name(s) and initials of all author(s); year ofpublication in parentheses, (b) title, underlined; (c) edi-tion and editor(s)' names and initials; (d) page referred to;(e) publisher; (f) place. Authors should ensure that thelisted references correspond exactly to those in the text.Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their referen-ces.
Figures In the text Arabic numbers should be used andall illustrations should be specifically referred to in thetext, e.g. (Figure 2). All illustrations should be submittedat about 1 times the intended final size and should benumbered as figures whether they are photographs,representational drawings or line diagrams and graphs.Photographs and photomicrographs should be unmountedglossy prints and should not be retouched, and should bechosen to exclude technical artefacts. Magnification isbest indicated by a line representing a defined lengthincluded within the photograph. Areas of key interestand/or critical reproduction should be indicated on aflimsy overlay attached to the photograph or on aphotocopy. All annotation and lettering should be in-dicated in the same way, and preferably not included onthe original print. Clearly contrasted and focussed printsare essential for adequate reproduction.Line diagrams and graphs should be on separate sheets;they must be drawn with black Indian ink on white paper,or supplied as photographic prints of such originals.Lettering on figures should be minimal and must notduplicate the legend. The use of symbols should beconsistent within papers, and explanation of symbolsshould be included in the caption, not on the figure.A photocopy of all illustrations should be submitted.Tables These should be as few as possible and shouldpresent only essential data. They should be typewritten onseparate sheets, have a title or caption, and given Romannumbers.Proofs Two marked copies of the proofs will be sent tothe principal author which should be read carefully forerrors. One corrected copy must be returned to the Editorwithin 3 days. Major alterations to the text cannot beaccepted.Copyright asgnment The principal author must com-plete and return to the Publisher the Copyright Assign-ment Form enclosed with the proofs.Offprints Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free ofcharge to the principal author. Additional offprints maybe ordered on the form accompanying proofs. Thecharges are necessarily higher if orders are received afterthe issue has gone to press.
Drug side effects Manuscripts reporting adverse drugreactions should be accompanied by evidence showingthat the reaction has been reported on a 'yellow card' or tothe appropriate drug licensing authority, and to the drugmanufacturer.
