A history of social justiceQueen Mary has its roots in four historic institutions that were founded to help the less privileged.

At a time when women and working-class communities faced extreme barriers to education, the People’s Palace invited people from all backgrounds to study together, and Westfield College was the first residential college in London for women.

The London Hospital Medical College and St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College were founded in 1785 and 1843 respectively, to improve the health of impoverished communities in the City and east London.

These founders aspired to create places where everyone would have access to the same opportunities in education, recreation and culture, regardless of background.

Mile End Set alongside the historic Regent’s Canal, our Mile End site is one of the largest residential campuses in the city and home to our new £39m Graduate Centre. Most of our postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students across the humanities, social sciences and science and engineering are based here.

Lincoln’s Inn FieldsMost of our postgraduate law students are based at our Lincoln’s Inn Fields campus in Holborn, the historic legal centre of London. Located in Zone 1, Lincoln’s Inn Fields is near to Covent Garden, famous for the performing arts.

WhitechapelMany of our postgraduate taught and postgraduate research medicine and dentistry students are based on our Whitechapel campus, next to the Royal London Hospital. Whitechapel is a vibrant area, famous for its street markets, art, culture and food. The campus has a strong sense of community with its own library, and state-of-the-art labs at the Blizard Institute.

West SmithfieldOur West Smithfield campus in Farringdon includes St Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts) and the West Smithfield Medical Library, and is home to cardiovascular, cancer, epidemiology and public health research facilities. Some of our postgraduate taught medical students are based here.

Charterhouse Square We have a campus at Charterhouse Square for postgraduate taught and postgraduate research medical students. Close to the Barbican in the City of London, this is

AccommodationQueen Mary provides accommodation for postgraduate students across our campuses. We can also provide advice on a range of alternative housing, such as renting, private halls or homestay.

Aspire Point, opened in September 2018, is home to 445 Queen Mary postgraduate students. With stunning views over London and the 2012 Olympic Park, Aspire Point provides affordable living and study space in Stratford, east London. We also have an additional 300 rooms for postgraduate students, available in halls owned by our preferred partner providers. These halls are for students of all disciplines apart from medicine and dentistry students, who have their own dedicated halls of residence.

We offer two pre-masters programmes: Graduate Diploma in Economics and Finance and the Graduate Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Exceptional facilitiesWe have invested £39m in creating a new Graduate Centre for our postgraduate students. With stunning views across the City from its top floor, this impressive space houses a 200-seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, café and a landscaped courtyard. It also offers 24-hour flexible study areas tailored to the needs and working patterns of postgraduates.

Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union supports you throughout your time at University. It offers over 300 diverse societies and sports clubs, a volunteering programme, academic advice service and provides education and wellbeing support. The Students’ Union also runs social spaces, a Sport & Fitness Centre, shops, cafés and bars where you can meet up with friends, take a break or grab something to eat. There is a packed programme of events, including dedicated events for postgraduate students.

LibrariesOur 24-hour Library in Mile End recently underwent a £1.5m refurbishment, providing even more study and computer spaces.

Sport at the Students’ UnionSport at Queen Mary is an important part of student life. We run a comprehensive sports programme offering a range of opportunities and experiences for everyone to get involved with, including;

• Qmotion is our on-campus Sport and Fitness Centre. It offers excellent facilities, 40+ exercise classes a week and the opportunity to access a free personalised gym programme every six weeks.

• Our 60 sports clubs and the Students’ Union Sport Leagues are a great social experience and an excellent way to develop your sporting skills. Many of our teams use facilities at the nearby Olympic Park, home of the 2012 Olympics, for their training and matches.

Many of our masters students go on to PhD study with us. Our academics supervise a very broad range of thesis topics. Through close individual supervision and a substantial schedule of research training, you will be supported in both completing your project and developing as an independent researcher.

Doctoral CollegeAs a PhD student at Queen Mary, you will become a member of our Doctoral College, a vibrant community of more than 1,800 postgraduates pursuing pioneering research across a wide range of academic disciplines. The Doctoral College oversees the life cycle of your PhD, supporting you through your application, enrolment, the development of your research, submission of your thesis, and on to the next steps of your career.

After getting my masters degree, I knew I wanted to explore more the research world. Going for a PhD seems the natural continuation of my chemistry studies. London – and Queen Mary in particular – offered the additional opportunity to study in an international and research-focused institution.

My PhD experience at Queen Mary has been challenging and exciting. PhD students get to work in a highly motivational environment.The effort we put in our research projects usually pays off by having our work published in scientific journals or by going to international conferences to show our research. I attended the international co-ordination chemistry conference in Japan and it was an amazing experience!

Funding and financial support

Over the past two years, Queen Mary:

• awarded £22m to over 2,500 postgraduate students

• invested over £3m in postgraduate taught students.

FundingWe want to attract the best students to Queen Mary, regardless of their financial situation. Every year we offer a range of scholarships for academically excellent students.

In 2018/19, we awarded 60 Queen Mary scholarships worth a total of £1,100,000 to postgraduate taught students across science and engineering, economics and finance, and law. We awarded over 1,000 Queen Mary scholarships worth a total of over £9m to postgraduate research students.

We also co-funded 85 Chevening and five Commonwealth Scholarships, which are specifically for international students.

Queen Mary Alumni Loyalty AwardIf you are a Queen Mary graduate, you may be eligible for our Alumni Loyalty Award for masters study (£1,000).

There are a number of funding options available to help you finance your postgraduate study. These include a package of competitive Queen Mary scholarships in a range of subject areas, as well as external sources of funding.

Funding and financial support

Funding for international studentsOur partnerships with external funding organisations such as Chevening, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and numerous governments around the world mean that we can support our international students through scholarships and funding.

Postgraduate Masters LoanThe Government’s Postgraduate Masters Loan offers up to £10,906 per programme to English students or EU nationals studying in England. International students are not eligible for this loan.

The loan is available for any full or part-time taught masters programme as well as Masters of Research (MRes), though you won’t normally be eligible if you already hold a masters degree or higher-level qualification. Separate loans are available if you normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Loan amounts and criteria differ; for further information visit Student Awards Agency Scotland, Student Finance Wales or Student Finance NI.

Without the loan I wouldn’t have been able to study full time and perhaps not at all. I did get some part-time work, but having the loan meant that I haven’t had to worry about working too many hours and can make studying my primary focus. The ability to pay it back like an undergraduate loan is important too. It means it’s not going to burden me with payments until I can afford those payments.

Postgraduate Doctoral LoanYou can borrow up to £25,000 with the Government’s Postgraduate Doctoral Loan. It is available for any taught or research-based postgraduate doctoral qualification, including part-time and distance learning. If you already hold a doctoral degree, you won’t normally be eligible for this loan and other eligibility criteria will also apply.

Law conversion programmesThe Senior Status LLB (two years) is a qualifying law degree suitable for non-law graduates. It is an accelerated version of the

traditional three-year route and is popular with students considering a career in law or with an academic interest in the subject.

Fast-track medicine programmesOur Graduate Entry Medicine MBBS (four years) is designed to be a fast-track route for graduates who obtained good degrees in science or health-related subjects. The first year of study is based on the first two years of the five-year MBBS programme.
