Dear colleagues,

Seventy five years of the work of a higher education institution is always

an important jubilee. The Faculty of Economics was founded on 31 March 1937, as the Higher School of Econom-ics and Commerce, in the environment without a long tradition in economic sci-ence. After the Second World War the Faculty became a part of the University of Belgrade. The Faculty passed a long way to the modern Faculty which relies on all contemporary achievements in its teaching and scientific process.

Since its founding, the Faculty has been an important educational and sci-entific institution with the clearly defined aims and objectives, including specifically the higher education of economists at the Bachelor level for various specialties and, over time, the education of Masters and Doctors of Science in Economics, Business Management and Statistics.

During 75 years of its history the Faculty of Economics has been actively improving the system of study at all lev-els, following modern international trends

in creating highly qualified experts in the field of economics. The Faculty is known nationally for the quality of its research, with postgraduate education (master and doctoral studies) making its central part. In the academic year 2006/07, in accord-ance with higher education reforms in Serbia, the Faculty of Economics reorgan-ized the postgraduate studies in order to provide one-year-long (60 ECTS) Master studies, in accordance to the European credit transfer system. Today, the Faculty offers 12 study programs fully accredited including several international Master programs jointly organized with foreign universities.

The Faculty of Economics has a long tradition in educating Doctors of Science in Economics, Management and Statistics. In the academic year 2008/09, the Faculty started with the Doctoral Studies, which last three years (180 ECTS points). Today the Faculty provides three fully accredit-ed PhD programs in Economics, Business Management and Statistics.

The Faculty of Economics is especially proud of its intensive international coop-eration, which has been maintained over the past 75 years. This is also reflected in intensive cooperation in the organiza-tion of joint studies with foreign higher education institutions, as well as in the scientific work.

The Faculty of Economics has proved that a difference is made by people. With 140 full-time teachers and associ-ates, as well as numerous programs of study offered at its postgraduate studies, the Faculty of Economics is one of the largest faculties within the University of Belgrade. At the same time, it represents a significant medium-sized university in itself. Naturally, apart from successful teachers and associates, the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade also has suc-cessful students. Since its foundation, about 2885 have continued their studies successfully advancing to the MSc degree and more than 740 obtained their PhD degree.

Postgraduate studies

The Faculty’s postgraduate courses are long established and successful, strongly

supported by our research work and links with industry. The Faculty of Economics has been organizing post-graduate courses since the early 1960s. Until 2006, these were two-year post-graduate studies, whereas the doctoral studies until 2008 were organized in the form of a doctoral thesis. COURSE OVERVIEW

Master PrograMs

Following the adoption of the Law on Higher Education in 2005, under which this form of study was introduced, the first generation of students in the master studies of the Faculty of Economics enrolled in the school year 2006/07. As the studies have been formed, to follow all trends of scientific development as well as the development of teaching process, the study programs underwent certain adjustments and were reformed for school year 2008/09. Pursuant to the decision of the Commission of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia, all master programs at the Faculty of Economics have been accredited.

Master academic studies have been fully adjusted to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and comply in all respects with the accreditation requirements and standards for this level of study (student workload, curriculum structure, aims and objectives of the study programs, student competencies acquired under the programs).

The master academic studies at the Faculty of Economics have 60 ECTS credits and last one year. The study pro-grams offer all necessary knowledge and academic skills required by professionals of different profiles at the level of master academic studies.

The study programs of master academic studies have been adjusted to the programs of foreign higher education institutions. The adjustment refers to: the curriculum and its content, aim and outcome of the course; student compe-tencies acquired under the program; jobs

that can be done by masters; enrollment requirements for study programs and perspectives of further education at the doctoral level.

The Faculty of Economics was among the first higher education institutions in Serbia to organize joint master programs in cooperation with prestigious foreign higher education institutions. Today, there are two international joint master programs under which teaching is con-ducted according to the study programs which, apart from accreditation in Serbia, also have foreign accreditation. Upon completion of these programs, students will acquire two diplomas: the diploma of the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade and the diploma of another – foreign institution.

entry reqirMents for Master studies

The Faculty welcomes application from all those interested in furthering their education.

The master studies are available for candidates who have completed a four-year bachelor academic program – BSc diploma of minimum 240 ECTS in rel-evant fields, not necessarily in econom-ics or management (most subjects are acceptable), after testing their knowledge relevant to the study program. More detailed requirements (the entrance exam information) can be found on the Faculty’s web page www.ekof.bg.ac.rs.

COURSE OVERVIEW

structure, objectives and aiMs of the Master studies

The master studies at the Faculty of Eco-nomics represent the second-degree ed-ucation of academic masters in econom-ics and masters in management for the specific fields. The master studies at the

Faculty of Economics provide 60 ECTS credits, after a student has acquired 240 ECTS credits at bachelor level. The study program subjects provide 45 ECTS cred-its, while the final master paper counts as 15 ECTS credits.

A course content is relevant to future careers. Our courses are designed to be very flexible. The program structure

fully follows the contemporary trends in the teaching process, thus ensuring an appropriate degree of electiveness. At the same time, the methods used in the teaching process are modern (the inclusion of students, encouragement of critical thinking, solving concrete problem – case study method and the like) and ensure the acquisition of appropriate competencies and academic skills in accordance with the study program and module.

Students acquire general and course-specific knowledge, as well as necessary academic skills (analytical, numeracy, information and communication). Masters acquire appropriate competencies and qualifications for performing complex jobs at different levels of decision making in firms, banks, government, central bank and the like. At the same time, masters provide knowledge needed for further education at the doctoral level.

The basic aim of all master programs is to educate appropriate professionals in a specified field at the master level, thus making them qualified for complex and managerial jobs in the economy, as well as for the inclusion in scientific research. We aim for postgraduates with an under-stading and ability to apply knowledge. Therefore, our courses are «applied» with a strong vocational emphasis. The program enables the acquisition of knowledge and mastery of skills required for the performance of very complex managerial and analytical jobs in different fields.

(More information about the struc-ture, objectives and aims of each master course can be found on the Faculty website: www.ekof.bg.ac.rs).

COURSE OVERVIEW

coMPetencies of graduate students

The diploma and qualifications, which are gained upon completion of any study program of master academic studies, correspond to the character, content and aims of each program.

The competencies acquired by students attending any study program of master academic studies are specifically linked to each scientific field covered by the program or, more exactly, program modules. All study programs of master academic studies offered by the Faculty of Economics supplement students’

knowledge acquired during their bachelor studies with a view to preparing them for further scientific research (at the doctoral level), or enabling them to apply acquired knowledge to solving concrete problems. Students acquire knowledge and academic skills that enable them to solve complex problems in an economic environment at the level of economic en-tities (firms, banks, financial institutions), government and its bodies (ministries, agencies, central bank), development in-stitutions and international organizations (depending on the study program). At the same time, students acquire the qualifica-tions for further scientific research in the

field covered by the study program, both for the formulation and assessment of simpler theoretical models, as well as for their application to real economic prob-lems. Students are also trained to present their opinions, ideas and conclusions to a broader academic and professional public in a clear and unambigous way. At the same time, they are trained to convey their knowledge in the field of econom-ics or management and business in the vocational training process (economics courses in secondary schools).

Specifiic competencies are given for each study program (on the Faculty website: www.ekof.bg.ac.rs).

The master program “Macroeconomics of Transition Economies” has given me opportunity to study on recognized French state university, without leaving my job in Belgrade. Studying on French and being able to pursue my studies abroad was precious experi-ence. Professors and knowledge that they gave me really have broadened my perspectives and work possibilities.

Hristina Bajić, Raiffeisen Bank, Serbia

After graduating from the Faculty of Electric Engineering in Bel-grade and five years of active work in the country and abroad, I have found that without adequate academic knowledge there would be much fewer opportunities for me to successfully conduct and manage business activities. In that sense, the program “Busi-ness Economics and Management” has fully met my expectations and it offers a fantastic theory basis which, combined with practi-cal experience, helps in mastering skills required from a manager.

International Master Programs

The Faculty of Economics was among the first faculties at the University of

Belgrade to start with the organization of international master programs. These are mostly joint programs with foreign universities. Since 2004, the international master program Business Economics and Management has been organized in cooperation with HEC - Paris and the International Master in Quantitative

Finance program in English (IMQF) with a large number of foreign professors – lec-turers. Since 2006, the Faculty has been organizing international master program in cooperation with the University of Nice “Sophia Antiplos”: Macroeconomics in Transition Economies. The program is realized in two languages - Serbian and French, and provides students with two diplomas: the Faculty of Economics in

Belgrade and the University of Nice “So-phia Antipolis”. Since 2010, we have been realizing the first MBA course together with a prestigious American university, the Texas A&M University, in compliance with the program implemented in the United States. The lectures are in English, and the students get two diplomas: Fac-ulty of Economics in Belgrade and Texas A&M University.

After graduating from Faculty of Economics, with B.Sc. in Eco-nomics with focusing on Statistics, and when I decided to go for a master degree I enrolled the International Master of Quantita-tive Finance. This program strongly expanded my knowledge and skills in Economics, and particularly in Finance. The best feature of IMQF is that it gives students a good background for both aca-demic and practitioner career. As I experienced both, working in financial industry and now in academia, I can surely confirm that. I’ve been thought by some of the most experienced researchers in the world who inspired me to follow academic track and intensify my strong interest in economics.

DOCTORAL STUDIES - PHD PROGRAMS

Doctoral Studies - PhD Programs

Within general contribution to the development of economic sci-

ence, as well as nourishing and improving overall scientific and research potential of our country (researchers and research infrastructure), establishing international cooperation, increasing general knowl-edge level in economy and society, the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade has been a leading institution in the country, where many PhD students have obtained their PhD degrees.

As the faculty with the longest tradi-tion in the fields of economic science, Faculty of Economics in Belgrade has a long history in educating doctors of science. Faculty of Economics then called Higher School of Economics and Com-merce (HSEC), long time ago, in 1939, was authorized to award PhD Degrees. The first doctoral thesis was defended at the Faculty in 1941. During the postwar period, when the Faculty became part of the University of Belgrade, special atten-

tion was paid to postgraduate studies at the level of doctorate of science.

Although the postgraduate – PhD Studies, until 2005, were designed in the form of tutorial work, rather then active teaching, the Faculty of Econom-ics followed all modern trends in science development regarding all segments of its activities related to PhD students. Therefore, the PhD theses defended at the Faculty of Economics made a contribution to the development of its main science fields: Economics, Business Management and Statistics. Up to pre-sent, 740 PhD dissertations have been defended at the Faculty of Economics.

The Faculty of Economics of Univer-sity of Belgrade in school year 2008/9 enrolled the first generation of students of doctoral studies. Doctoral studies are fully compliant to European System of points’ transfer and accumulation and are realized within three scientific fields:

1. Economics 2. Business Management 3. Statistics

Doctoral studies include 180 ESPB, ac-companying previously achieved scope of studies of at least 300 ESPB points.

be involved in scientific research in the field of economics, including a critical as-sessment of scientific and research work of others.

After completing Master studies at the Faculty of Economics University of Belgrade I decided to also enroll the PhD studies at the Faculty of Economics, program - ECONOMICS. I wanted to obtain a PhD degree from a renowned institution, recognized in both academic and professional circles, which is also flexible enough to offer education opportunities to employed student. My academic results, the knowledge gained at the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty’s reputation have undoubtedly contributed significantly to my professional advancement and my career so far. Having this in mind, wishing to broaden my knowledge and prepare myself for the future professional challenges, I chose to become a PhD student at the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade.

emir ZiLDžović, PhD student, Economic Assistant to the Vice Governor, National Bank of Serbia

The PhD program at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Belgrade is well conceived and organized. The large number of op-tional courses, useful mandatory courses, and outstanding faculty enable the student to become an expert economic scientist and researcher, regardless of his or her field of economics. Therefore, I believe that the PhD program is the right choice for individu-als who have high ambitions for personal development and/or a desire to become involved in scientific research in economics.

After graduating from the IMQF masters course, I chose to pursue an academic career. I decided to enroll a PhD program in Economics, at the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade. One of the main reasons for doing so is my cooperation with professors from the Department for Statistics and Mathematics. This cooperation, established during my masters studies, continued throughout my PhD. I benefited enormously from our discussions, especially in the first and the third semester. Their advices regarding my research topic were of paramount importance. Also, I had an excellent commu-nication with faculty staff employed in the Center for PhD Studies. They helped me a lot whenever I needed some administrative information regarding my PhD curriculum.

involved in realisation of numerous scien-tific projects (both national and inter-national) in the domain of fundamental, multidisciplinary and applied research, financed by various institutions, ranging from the Ministry of Science of the Re-public of Serbia, through EU (within FP7 projects), to bilateral projects supported by certain states and their foundations (Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia etc).

A special segment of scientific and research activity of the Faculty relates to the organization of scientific meetings, workshops and conferences (national

and international). These conferences are often organised either in co-operation or with support of some national or international associations, such as EACES or ASECU. The Faculty of Economics has founded the Serbian Scientific As-sociation of Economists. They have been jointly organizing several traditional yearly conferences related to specific top-ics – the results of economic transition, economic policy, management and busi-ness issues and international economics. The papers are presented in the related monographs.
