Hyderabad is truly aunique city as it canboast of heritage archi-

tecture from all religions anddomains. On the one handthere are classic Old City struc-tures that epitomise Nizam-eraarchitecture such as dargahs, mosques and palaces. On theother hand temples in the twincities are typical examples ofintricate detailing that SouthIndian temples are famous for.Hyderabad also has a numberof churches owing to its largeChristian population.

The St Mary’s Church inSecunderabad, dedicated to theVirgin Mary has been widelyregarded as the most beautifuland inspiring church in thetwin cities. The sense of calmthat one experiences when they

enter the church lifts one to aspiritual plane. It is a struc-

ture we ought to be proudof and is renownedthroughout the countryfor its history.

Sharing thesame com-pound wallwith St Ann’sHigh School,the churchwas con-structed bythe school’smissionar-ies. Thecon-

struction began in 1840 andwas completed by 1850. Thehumongous tower thatimpresses with its sheer sizewas added later.

The church was originallybuilt to cater to the spiritualneeds of Irish soldiers whowere stationed in Hyderabad inthe mid 19th century. It wasbuilt in gothic architecturalstyle. The latest additions to thechurch are the Parish Housebuilt in 1946 and the magnifi-cent statue of Mother Marycradling Jesus after his crucifix-ion. It is a replica of Pieta, thefamous stone work ofMichelangelo in Rome. Thechurch won the INTACH awardfor best Heritage Structure in2007.

For many years St Mary’swas a cathedral until St John’s

church took over the honour. It is one of the biggestchurches in Hyderabad andreflects class and Britishheritage from everyangle. This is the rea-son why the biggestand the best mid-night mass is heldhere duringChristmas.

KChandrasekhar Rao,the TRS chief may belaying low but theparty is

buoyant. Major political par-ties agree openly that it is notwise to contest against TRS inTelangana region.

Leaders cutting acrossparties defecting to TRSproved this. With the by-elec-tions round the corner con-testants now want to beton either TRS or YSRCongress. The latest on thiscount is that YSR Congress istrying to avoid contesting inthe Telangana region. If thisbe true, the TRS will sweepthe Telangana region, politi-cal observers calculated. Astaunch supporter of Jagansaid, “The YSR Congress hasall the ability to win the elec-

tion, but it is not wise to swimagainst the tide.”

Corruption and credibili-ty have no significance in theelections. Even before thedates are announced for theby-polls the leaders havestarted talking about TRS andYSR Congress. When it comesto Jagan Mohan Reddy andthe YSR family the peoplehave never bothered to takethe corruption charges seri-ously. They just voted them topower. But there are also fearsthat what happened to TDPshould not happen to YSRCongress. It was Chiranjeeviwho has made a dent into theTDP vote bank, which result-ed in yielding totally to TRSmay not be wise, they say.

Congress strategy tocounter the combined attackis to extol YSR but denounceYSR Congress for engineeringdefection in the Congress. The TDP, meanwhile, remainson a sticky wicket. But, theparty put up a brave front.Warla Ramaiah, a senior lead-er from TDP says the situa-tion is now conducive to TDPas the Congress has got itsown troubles and others arenot effective. In Telangana thesituation is rather complicat-ed. Even the TRS lost some ofits grounds after the SakalaJanula Samme (generalstrike) that flopped. But theywould still sweep the bypollsis the reading.

T-stir may be at its lowest ebb but theTRS is waiting like a spider for its prey. All parties that do not publicly supportTelangana State are on the run

It seems the victims of familyfeuds especially, martial ofthe disputes, will finally have

Suddenly, there is a greatdemand for drivers this New

Year’s Eve. Salary is for the asking,no questions posed. But why thismad rush for drivers?

Bigwigs and celebs are afraid ofCV Anand’s brigade. “Having tastedblood by catching some live bigfish recently, they are raring to gofor more,” put a wit in a satiric way.So, instead of taking the risk ofdriving oneself after a few pegs ofelixir under the belt, they’d like toengage a driver even at an exorbi-tant pay.

Behind the sudden promotionof driver’s virtue, however, is theshrewd transport companies, grapevine say. But it is welcomed

by 4-wheeler owners who usuallydrive by themselves for conve-nience. The police diktat recentlyto bars/ pus/ restaurants that theywould also be held responsible ifpeople are found driving after filledto their gills.

For instance, GVS Kumar, working with a private bank in theCity said he was planning to cele-brate this New Year withoutrestraint. He has decided to hire adriver for that night. Apart from thepay the driver will get a bottle afterthe work. Rajesh K, a senior execu-tive, too has similar plans.

Talking to Postnoon some gov-ernment drivers at the Secretariatsaid they were hired for December31 for huge fee.

However, they refused to dis-close the amount.

He’s been grabbing eye balls forquite some time now with hisaggressive campaign for the

Lokpal Bill. He’s threatened to fastunto death, organised peacefulprotest marches and mobilised theyouth of the country unlike everbefore all for one cause – to get astronger legislation to stamp out cor-ruption. For the third time this year,Anna has begun fasting, but this timeit seems to be affecting his health. Yetthe response in the City towards hismovement has been at best luke-warm. Unlike last time, when themovement got strong support from

Hyderabadis with everybody fromsenior citizens to the youth partici-pating in the movement, this timeround there seem to be very few whoare willing to pledge their support forthe cause. On day one, there wereless than 60 supporters present atDharna Chowk and today on day 2only volunteers were seen and nosupporters.

“Compared to last time theresponse this time is rather weak”says Krishna K, volunteer with IndiaAgainst Corruption, Hyderabadchapter. Volunteers of India againstcorruption quote several reasons forthe poor support this time. One ofthe biggest reasons being that stu-dents stayed away from the move-

ment due to ongoing exams. Lasttime 70 per cent of the supporterswere students. “In Hyderabad, it isthe students who come out in sup-port of this movement. But this timeround since I have exams going on, Icannot join the protest,” saysDeepika Kancherla.

With JNTU exams ending todayand OU’s tomorrow organisers arepinning hopes for a bigger gatheringfor Thursday’s candle light marchthat will be held at People’s plaza.

Another reason for the poor turn-out is that it is the holiday season andmost of the IT crowd that had enthu-siastically participated in the drive toeradicate corruption last time is nowmissing in action. “Although last time

I had lent my support to the move-ment, this time I am in Bengaluru formy vacations,” says Vishal Arya, an ITprofessional. Lack of awareness isalso to blame for this lacklustre par-ticipation. Many people claim thatthey are not even aware of any dhar-nas taking place this time. “I was notaware about the new series of events.I got to know about them on Tuesdaynight. Now that I know I will partici-pate in the movement and fightagainst corruption,” says SanilTalaulikar, an IT professional.

But Kumar Shastri, a volunteerremains hopeful. “We are very disap-pointed that not many supporterscame, but by mid after noon collegestudents may come..” he signs off.

Syria Crisis: Where is the world?A

ngry protesters haveconfronted visiting Ar abLeague monitors in Sy -ria’s restive city of Homs,

demanding international protec-tion. The observers are verifyingcompliance with an Arab Leagueplan to end the go vernment’s vio-lent crackdown.

Tens of thousands protestedin Homs as the monitors arriv ed.The Arab League said the first daywas very good.

Tanks reportedly withdrewbefore the monitors arrived butactivists say some were simplydeployed out of sight.

The UN says more than 5,000people have been killed inprotests against President Bash aral-Assad’s rule since March.

Video footage showed resi-dents arguing with the monitors, trying to get them to go furtherinside Baba Amr to see the victi -ms. The residents in the videoshout: “We want internationalprotection” and “Where is theworld?” One of the monitors saysthat he is not authorised to speak.

There were reports of contin-ued violence in Homs while themonitors were there. The LocalCo-ordination Committees, anetwork of opposition activists

inside Syria, said 14 people hadbeen killed in the city on Tuesday.

However the head of the mo -nitors was upbeat about the vis it.Sudan’s Gen Mustafa Dabi speak-ing to Reuters said, “Tod ay wasvery good and all sides wereresponsive.”

He added: “I am returning toDamascus for meetings and I willreturn tomorrow to Homs. Theteam is staying in Homs.”

However, BBC correspondent

said that the results were mixed atbest, and the visit brought homehow complex the situationis.Abdul Omar, a spokesman forthe London-based SyrianObservatory for Human Rights, told the BBC he had hoped forbetter results from the missionand that 10 observers for Homswas never going to be enough.

He said tens of thousands ofpeople had come out onto thestreets to demonstrate in one dis-

trict of Homs but that the moni-tors did not go there.

Mr Omar said the Syrian gov-ernment was playing cat-and-mouse with the protesters bywithdrawing tanks from parts ofthe city.

He called on the Arab Leagueto raise the Syrian situationimmediately with the UNSecurity Council to obtain ameaningful resolution against thegovernment.

Eyewitness Abu Rami told theBBC the security forces hadchanged clothes to appear likenormal civilians.

Correspondents say there arealso reports of another largeprotest in the city of Hama, withsecurity forces opening fire ondemonstrators in the centralsquare.

Elsewhere in Syria, the LocalCo-ordination Committees said25 people had been killed, including in Damascus, Deraaand Latakia, and on the borderwith Lebanon. The Arab Leaguemission, which may rise to 200-300 monitors, is to assess an ini-tiative agreed with the Syriangovernment requiring all armedforces to withdraw from areas ofconflict.

INDIA VS AUSTRALIA 10

n India surrendered the chance to drive home theadvantage with indifferent batting on another glori-ous morning in Melbourne. They lost seven wicketsfor 68 runs in the the session.

n The Indian batsmen lacked the will to score runsand allowed the bowlers take over. They dawdled atthe wicket and the all too familiar collapse wasbound to follow.

n To their credit, the Australian bowlers struck goodlines and Ben Hilfenhaus was found his best formand marked a successful return to Tests with a five-wicket haul.

n Australia were reeling at 27 for four at one time butIndia let them off the hook with Ricky Ponting andMichaell Hussey consolidating. Umesh Yadav againpicked up early wickets.

n Zaheer Khan proved what a good bowler he is withthe old ball by snapping up Ponting and Haddin latein the day. India will have a good chance to winthey bat well in the second innings.

on Tuesday, the Segway scooterclaimed Ian Healy as its second vic-tim at the Melbourne CricketGround on Wednesday when it felland rode over him shortly beforethe third day of the first Testagainst India.

Healy, working as a commenta-tor for the host broadcaster, stepped off the front of the scooter

after taking a ride around the MCGbut it kept going and rode over thetop of him. It then went on to chewup the MCG turf before it wasbrought under control. The funnyincident comes in the wake of acrash by the TV sports cameramanJoe Previtera into a helmet on theturf on Tuesday that resulted in anembarrassing spill in front a hugecrowd as he was filming the teambefore play. It’s a bit ironical thatthe Healy incident happened whenPrevitera was being interviewed bythe host broadcasters onWednesday.

behind Barclays Premier Leagueleaders Manchester City with aneasy 2-0 win at Carrow Road.

After laying siege to theNorwich goal in the first half,Spurs finally found the opener 10minutes after the break whenBale picked up EmmanuelAdebayor’s pass to drive underJohn Ruddy. Bale then latched onto Luka Modric’s pass to sprint 45yards before lifting the ball overthe on-rushing Norwich goal-keeper with a sublime finish tokill off the match 12 minutes later. The performance may have beenslightly ropey in the first-half, butthe display from Bale highlightsjust why Spurs are proving thatthey should be deemed credibletitle challengers.

With Chelsea, ManchesterCity, Arsenal and Liverpool alldrawing over the past 24 hours,Tottenham had the perfect chan -ce to put themselves within strik-ing distance of the summit. Baledrew saves from Ruddy on twooccasions after terrorising RitchieDe Laet with his searing pace.

Bale slammed a deflectedshot just wide, but he was soonpresented with another chancethanks to an error from RussellMartin. The Welshman nicked theball off the dallying defender andcharged through clear at goal buthe could only blast over.

A superb 50-yard ball fromRafael van der Vaart sentAdebayor free. The striker edgedthe ball past the on-rushingRuddy, but he could not recover itto tap home and the ball went outof play. Another Spurs attackcame moments later when Balegot on the end of Modric’sthrough-ball but Ruddy pulled offa good save.

William Gallas slipped on theedge of the box, bringing down

Andrew Surman and earning hi -mself a booking as Norwich be g -an the second half with morecon fidence. Surman picked him-self up and curled a low shot thatdrifted inches wide, with BradFriedel scrambling for his farpost. Spurs took the lead 10 min-utes in to the second half. Van derVaart picked out Adebayor in thebox, he held the ball up and fend-ed off three Norwich defendersbefore squaring to Bale who gotthe ball out from under his feet toshoot under Ruddy after beingleft unmarked 12 yards out.

Adebayor converted BenoitAssou-Ekotto’s cross soon afterbut the Togo striker was ruled outfor offside. Bale grabbed his sec-

ond of the game to make it 2-0 inthe 67th minute. Scott Parker laidthe ball to Modric, who sent theWelshman galloping through on a45-yard dash. Bale kept his com-posure, dispatching the coolest ofchips over an on-rushing Ruddy.

Adebayor squared for Mod ricas Tottenham looked for a thirdbut the Croatian could onlymuster a weak shot that Ruddygathered easily. Martin headedwide in injury time as Norwichlooked for a consolation, but itnever came and Spurs played therest of the match out comfortablyfor a vital three points. Arsenal were left frustratedas 10-man Wolves battledto a 1-1 draw at Emirates

Stadium. The Gunners, looking togo back into the top four, wereahead after just eight minutesthrough Gervinho but Wolves, struggling at the other end of thetable, rallied and levelled on 38minutes through Steven Fletcher.

The visitors survived the sec-ond half dismissal of midfielderNenad Milijas as goalkeeperWayne Hennessey denied thehome side time and again.

Arsenal took the lead whenThomas Rosicky fed YossiBenayoun, whose pass split theWolves defence as Gervinho beat

the offside trap to race clear. The Ivory Coast frontman

waited for keeper Hennessey tocommit himself, before cuttingback inside and then rolling theball into the net between the twodefenders on the line. To theircredit, Wolves weathered thestorm and then grabbed a levellereight minutes before the breakwhen Arsenal failed to clear a cor-ner, which Stephen Hunt lobbedback in. His shot was deflectedand Fletcher guided a header intothe far corner. The Gunnersupped the tempo after the

restart, with Robin van Persieclipping a free-kick towards thetop corner, only for Hennessey totouch it over at full stretch, whilePer Mertesacker’s close-rangeheader was then scrambled clearby the busy Wolves keeper.

Referee Stuart Atwell bran-dished his red card on 75 minutesafter a studs-up sliding challengeby Milijas on Mikel Arteta. VanPersie’s shot on the turn wasdeflected behind as Arsenal laidsiege to the Wolves goal, withsubstitute Andrey Arshavin thenclipping the outside of the post.

Arsenal settle for 1-1 draw

Mackieearns pointfor HoopsJamie Mackie scored for the sec-

ond game running to earn QPR athoroughly deserved 1-1 drawagainst Swansea at the LibertyStadium and end a run of threestraight defeats.

The Scotland winger coolly slot-ted home a 58th-minute equaliserafter Leon Britton’s defensive headerhad slipped between his owndefenders to allow Mackie in ongoal. Swansea had led from the 14thminute thanks to a controversialDanny Graham strike.

The Welsh side, defeated justonce at home this term, slowlyfound their feet, but Graham con-trolled Wayne Routledge’s centrebefore firing low into Paddy Kenny’sleft-hand corner, having being giventoo much time to turn by Fitz Halland Luke Young.

The QPR defenders appealedthat Graham had handled as hebrought the ball down, with manag-er Neil Warnock leaving the fourthofficial in no doubt as to his ownview, but the goal stood.

Hoops striker Heidar Helgusonwas guilty of poor finishing as heheaded over twice in quick succes-sion from crosses by Young and JoeyBarton but the QPR supremacy con-tinued when they controlled theearly stages of the second stanza, with Mackie levelling the scores inthe 58th minute.

Britton’s effort to get his headto Kenny’s goal-kick only managedto split his own defence, and thealert Mackie pounced to racethrough and calmly guide the ballpast Michel Vorm.

Graham almost teed up LukeMoore after fine hold-up work in thebox, and the former Watford manwas then denied what he felt was aclear penalty after being felled as herolled away from Armand Traore, butreferee Lee Probert waved away theappeals. ES

If you want to be fancy, you could call it"crowdsourcing" — a term invented byJeff Howe in a 2006 Wired magazine arti-cle for the process of allocating tasksusually performed by individuals to a

group of people, thus calling upon communalintelligence. I've always thought of it more as"composting down", making something con-sistent and salubrious out of disparate wastematter.

Whichever term you prefer, it is a fact thatBooks of the Year choices are best weighed enmasse, rather than credited individually. DrJohnson generously allowed that a man is notunder oath in lapidary inscriptions.Reviewers feel just the same when invited tochoose their books of the year.

That's why so many freely testify to oldfriendships and longstanding loyalties of onesort or another. That's how so many review-ers, including such bastions of probity as ASByatt and the Archbishop of Canterbury, manage to make their "choice" several timesover for the year: some of them divertinglydifferent, some stoutly the same.

No embarrassment need be felt, for theseselections are not to be understood as anykind of eternal testament. Many are littlemore than a stamp-saving literary Christmascard — or not even that, just a cheery littlewave across a crowded room.

Nevertheless, the wisdom of crowds pre-vails. Taken together, books of the year choic-es do reliably reveal the most highly ratedtitles, so here, by way of a last-minute year-ender shopping list, is a conspectus.

In fiction, the clear winner was AlanHollinghurst's The Stranger's Child, chosensome 16 times in the newspapers and maga-zines I've contrived to collate, followed byJennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad, named more than a dozen times.

Edward St Aubyn's At Last and Ali Smith's

There but for the were cited more than half adozen times each, followed not too far behindby Julian Barnes's Man Booker winner, TheSense of an Ending. Barnes himself courte-ously nominated the St Aubyn and theHollinghurst as among the home-grown fic-tion he has most admired.

In the more varied field of non-fiction, thewinner with 10 votes was Claire Tomalin'sCharles Dickens: A Life, followed by Why BeHappy When You Could Be Normal? byJeanette Winterson.

After that, All Hell Let Loose: The World atWar 1939-1945 by Max Hastings was mostoften chosen, with multiple mentions also for

Craig Brown's One on One and NicolaShulman's Graven with Diamonds — impres-sive, given her subject (Sir Thomas Wyatt).

If crowdsourcing is not for you, books of theyear choices also yield individual recommen-dations, from contributors not merrily play-ing the game, that are so convincing as to beobviously worth heeding.

Following up on these, I have already readand greatly enjoyed Thin Paths: Journeys inand around an Italian Mountain Village byJulia Blackburn and The Vagabond's Breakfastby Richard Gwynn. As it happens, these lastwere chosen by several individuals; some-times one is all it takes, though.

GHMC BUDGET CUT will choke City

The decision of the GreaterHyderabad Municipal

Corporation to slash itsannual budget by almost `400crore is ironic as the City keeps

expanding into the suburbs andin turn the population also

increases. Though GHMC officialscite declining sources of revenue

as the cause of the budget cut,one can’t help but wonder where

all the revenue from the City’sgrowth is going. Allocation of

adequate funds and increasing itin proportion to City’s growth are

vital to maintain the infrastruc-ture. Once the civic body starts

cutting corners, services and utili-ties will be affected and public

will start feeling the pinch. Moreover, Brand Hyderabad,

which has been painstakinglybuilt over the last 15 years, will

suffer at a time when majorcities are jostling with each otherto draw investors. We need goodroads, drains, waste disposal sys-

tems and efficient mechanisms toredress grievance. Slashing bud-

gets will only make mattersworse.

NEW DELHI: Small is beautiful! So goes the adage. But 2011 wasanything but beautiful for India’s26 million micro, small and medi-um enterprises (MSMEs).

MSME entrepreneurs facedseveral challenges throughout theyear, with the situation worseningas the months went by.

High interest rates, rising costof raw materials and labourremained the key input chal-lenges. Demand compressionand tough competition, both indomestic and foreign markets, confronted the units as they ven-tured out to market their pro-duce. The trade deficit of $12.6billion between India and Chinaduring the April to July period, added to their woes.

“Rising competition fromChinese imports was a cause ofconcern. The sector faced a lot ofheat because of cheap importsfrom China. Besides, the slow-down in Europe and Westerncountries also posed a challengeand threat,” HP Kumar, Chairmanand Managing Dire ctor ofNational Small IndustriesCorporation (NSIC) said PTI.

Kumar said Indian MSMEsare at a disadvantage when itcomes to interest costs. “We wereunable to compete with otherAsian economies. The high bor-

rowing cost of 13-15 per centaffected our competitiveness, compared to other nations whereit was 6-8 per cent.”

As the going gets tough, thereis widespread sickness amongMSMEs. According to govern-ment data, as many as 91,400micro and small units had shutoperations as of March, 2011. Ofthese, about 13,000 were added inthe fiscal 2010-11.

The reasons for closure werefinancial non-viability due tochanging business environment, lack of demand, obsolete tech-nology, non-availability of rawmaterial, infrastructural con-straints, inadequate and delayedcredit and managerial deficien-

cies. The government did chip into ameliorate the situation, but itwill be quite some time before theimpact filters through. On thepolicy front, the Cabinetapproved the Public ProcurementPolicy for MSMEs.

Under the policy, a minimumshare of 20 per cent of total pur-chases of Central ministries/departments/PSUs has beenreserved for micro and smallenterprises. Within the 20 percent share of annual procure-ment from MSEs, 4 per cent ofgovernment procurements hasbeen reserved for MSEs owned bySCs/STs.

Of 2.6 crore MSME units, around 1.18 lakh enterprises are

registered by persons belongingto Scheduled Castes and 44,840units owned by those fromScheduled Tribes.

The decline in export growthwas witnessed in segments likereadymade garments, leather, machine tools, light engineeringand gems and jewellery. On thedomestic front, automobiles andelectronics took a hit due to thehigh cost of raw materials andhigh interest rates.

“Interest costs went up by 50per cent. MSMEs were badlyaffected because of demand con-straints,” VK Agarwal, President,Federation of Indian Small andMedium Enterprises said.

To address the situation aris-ing from the global crisis, ema-nating particularly fromEuropean markets, the govern-ment announced a 2 per centinterest subsidy on rupee exportand allowed for credit in handi-crafts and hand looms industries.

The government made effortsto address the issue of a lack offinancial resources, which acts asa deterrent in the growth ofMSME units. Market regulatorSecurities and Exchange Board ofIndia (Sebi) gave the nod to BSEand National Stock Exchange toopen a dedicated exchange forsmall and medium units. PTI

MSMEs badly hit in 2011

HYDERABAD: Jay Galla,Chairman, CII (Andhra Pradesh)expressed concern over the pro-posed 10 per cent hike of powercharges for commercial andindustrial users. The increase frompresent level Rs4.24 to Rs5.34 perunit will lead to increase in thecost of production and make busi-ness less competitive.

The government justified thepower tariff hike by citing theincreasing power revenue deficit. However, Galla said, governmentcould have reduced the powersubsidies and introduced betterexpenditure management instead.

The timing of proposed powerhike for the industry will send awrong signal for the prospectiveinvestors, especially at the timewhen an international event likepartnership summit slated forJanuary. The government canstreamline the open access systemfor industry; he suggested andurged the government not to levycross subsidy charges.

GoogleintroducesMedia AdsHYDERABAD: Google hasintroduced a new ad format,‘Media Ads’, designed to ensurethat users find the informationand enables the advertiser toreach potential customers in theformat the users like.

Media Ads introduces newways to target, pay for, and expe-rience video ads on GoogleSearch. Unlike other video for-mats, Media Ads is an entirelystandalone format designed todisplay video ads in front andcenter.

Targeting in Media Ads iscompletely automated unlike theAd Words. When someone entersa search on google.com, algo-rithms determine what all aredirectly related to the search andwill automatically display theMedia Ad at the top of the searchresults page.

The format does not allowadvertiser to pick competing key-words. For example, if a usertypes Sach ka Saamna, only adsunits containing video from Sachka Saamna will appear, accordingto a Google statement.

CII expressesconcern overpower tariff hike

Prudhvi Raju [email protected]

HYDERABAD: “Power-inten-sive industries such as manufac-turing are badly affected with thepower crisis. Small informationtechnology (IT) firms and ITenabled business (ITES) are alsoaffected in the service sector. Notonly the Confederation of IndianIndustry (CII), all the industryassociations have taken up thepower crisis issues with the gov-ernment. There is an assurancefrom the government to reducethe power cuts. But, nothing hashappened so far,” said RameshDatla, Chairman, CII Micro Smalland Medium Enterprises(MSMEs) Council.

In an interaction on the per-formance of MSMEs in the Statein 2011, he says that officially, there is a two-day power cut tothe industries. “However, if wecount with unofficial interrup-tions, the power cut is for almostthree days.” A unit of electricitycosts Rs4. But, if the industry isrun with a generator, it costs Rs15a unit. This is almost four timesthe actual cost.

Moreover, micro and small

companies cannot afford even agenerator. They are shuttingdown during the day and workingonly when there is power supplyduring the nights and stretchingthemselves. This is a serious issueand will affect the Sate and itsgrowth. “A government whichoffers quality power alone canaspire to the growth,” he said.

The rising interest rates arealso a concern for the industries.Indian industries try to grow on

debts. Therefore, increase in inte -rest rates would affect the profitsof the MSEMs. Government isoffering discount of around 3 percent for the industries who avail aloan of less than Rs10 lakh. Thislimit has to be increased to bene-fit more industries. There is aneed of single window clearance,he points out.

The government has imple-mented the industry bodies’request to some extent and there

is some progress in this area. But,more has to be done, he says.

Talking about schemes, Datlasaid there is no doubt that stateand central governments areoffering a lot of schemes toMSMEs. However, there are diffi-culties in implementing andavailing these schemes. Compa -nies need to put in alot of timeand effort in getting theseschemes. The government has tooffer these schemes in easilyimplementable way for theireffective use.

The growth rate of the indus-try would be slow in the first twoquarters of the next year as theseimpact will continue and thereare elections in some States andindustry may see some growthonly after third quarter.

The market has become high-ly competitive and margins havecome down drastically. Inputcosts and interest rate have goneup with the inflation but the out-put is decreased. The sustenancehas become a critical issue for thebusinesses. Government has tocreate conducive environmentwith adequate power, lowerinterest rates and offer practicalschemes, he asserted.

Govt has to create conducive environment

What can youngsters do to preventheart problems?A heart attack occurs when a clotblocks the flow of blood through acoronary artery, starving the heart ofoxygen and damaging the heartmuscle. If not treated immediately, heart attacks can be fatal or causelong-term damage to the heart andbody. Because heart attacks are soserious, accounting for the leadingcause of death among men andwomen in the United States and nowin India too, prevention is key.

Through appropriate lifestylechanges and medication, patients atrisk can work with their doctors tohelp drastically reduce their risk for afirst heart attack. And surprisingfindings show that younger adultsmay benefit from preventive thera-pies more than we might expect.

A recent study presented at theAmerican Heart Association’s annualconference found that younger menand women are much less likely touse preventive therapies, yet may beat higher risk for a first heart attackthan realised.

Heart diseases set to fall in India: DoctorNEW DELHI: There is good newson the health front. A leading car-

diologist says incidents ofheart disease in India are

set to plateau in sevento eight years and thenfall due to greaterawareness about a

healthy lifestyle andmore effective drugs.“People are cutting

down on salt intake, a develop-ment that is sure to bring downnow rampant cases of high bloodpressure,” Vinay Sanghi, from the

Fortis Escorts Hospital, told IANS.“More patient friendly medi-

cation with few side effects is alsonow available,” he said. “Peoplealso understand the necessity ofexercising every day. All these fac-tors should cut down the numberof those who face the risk of heartailment,” said Sanghi.

Heart disease is considered asign of prosperity, mostly accruingto those who lead a sedentarylifestyle, devoid of even givingminimal exercise to their body.

Heart diseases have now

become the number one killer inIndia, replacing communicablediseases from that slot. A quarterof those who get heart attacks arein the 25-69 age group.

Increasingly, heart ailmentsare killing Indians both in urbanand rural areas, although the fatal-ities are more in cities and towns.

“The cycle of heart disease hasstarted. The number shouldplateau in seven to eight years, from which point it will start todecline,” Sanghi said.

For now, the number of heart

diseases was “rising alarmingly”.The total number of cases wasmore than in the developed world.

“Heart diseases occur mostlyin Tier I and II cities. New cases arevery high — for now. The goodnews is people are realising theneed to maintain healthy lifestyle, keep away from salty snacks andfast food, go for more physicalactivity, and take a morning walk. There is increasing awareness.

“More than anything else, it isthis self-realisation that will helpIndia in the long run.”

POPPING MULTI VITAMINS

DOESN’T HELPP

opping multi-vitamin pills doesn’tseem to confer any real health ben-efits, according to a new study. Ateam led by Nancy University

researchers in France tracked 8,112 volun-teers who took either a placebo or onecontaining vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium and zinc, daily for oversix years.

The study, one of the most exhaustiveto date, suggests that millions may bethrowing their money away without deriv-ing any real benefits. They were just as like-ly to develop cancer or heart disease asthose who took an identical-lookingdummy pill.

It found that pills containing vitamin E,ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, selenium andzinc increased the risk of malignantmelanoma, the deadliest form of skin can-cer, four-fold, the Daily Mail reports.

Many users fall into the category ofhealthy adults who believe the pills will actto insure them against deadly illnesses, said Catherine Collins, chief dietician at StGeorge’s Hospital in London.

“But they are wasting their money. Thiswas a large study following people up for along period of time assessing everythingfrom their mobility and blood pressure towhether they were happy or felt pain,” sheadded. It also discovered that women on adaily multi-vitamin pill increased their riskof breast cancer by up to 20 percent.

While the evidence that vitamins cando harm is still limited, the latest studyseems to confirm that many people are atthe very least taking them unnecessarily.

Al Capone (The Untouchables)

Al Capone is absolutely menacingand larger-than-life character in

The Untouchables. Robert De Nirocaptures the ruthlessness that indeli-bly marked Capone’s infamy foreverin the annals of criminal history. Arole that is arguably the one of thebest in cinematic history. A despicableand hardened criminal Capone ruledChicago with absolute power. No onecould touch him. No one could stophim, until Eliot Ness and a small forceof men swore they’d bring him down.Capone was a ruthless bootlegger buthe has his own take on his business:“People are gonna drink! You knowthat, I know that, we all know that, and all I do is act on that. And all thistalk of bootlegging — what is boot-legging? On a boat, it’s bootlegging. On Lake Shore Drive, it’s hospitality.I’m a businessman!” Indeed, ashrewd businessman who has noqualms in battering his own men witha baseball bat. Money seemed to behis only ally and he spent it lavishly.Whether it was for the purpose ofgetting someone killed or for bribingthe jury.

The action genre that has always had wide fan following. Gangs and mobsters have been all-time favouriteswith movie-makers as well as audiences. Now as the chase to catch the most elusive Don begins, we take a

look at some of the mob bosses who have captivated audiences over the ages

Frank Lucas (American Gangster)

Agangster rises from a sidekick and strong man to the top, only to be pulled down by his slowly mounting excesses.

Frank Lucas is a smart, sophisticated, hard-working, and com-plicated man. His icy behaviour and devotion to his family iswhat makes him stand out. This Harlem hoodlum smugglesheroin into the country by hiding it in the bodies of US soldierskilled during battle in Vietnam. When he spots a chance tomake an entrance into the all-white world of crime when hisboss is killed, he removes the middlemen and buys his drugsdirectly from the producers in Thailand. He soon works his wayup the ladder by selling drugs of superior quality and at alower price than his competitors, thus making enemies. Hisbusiness ethics is simple, which is to eliminate anyone whocomes in the way of his rise. His personal life is however inshambles and a deal gone wrong lands him in the slammer,However, this is not your typical gangster. Once in jail, he turnsan informer and busts a lot of drug cartels in the city. DenzelWashington plays the role of real life notorious drug dealer,Frank Lucas . He plays the bad guy but the skill with which hecarried out the role is thrilling and admirable. AmericanGangster was one of Denzel’s best performances.

KINGS OF MEAN STREET

Tommy DeVito (Goodfellas)

Arobber with a scary temper. A psychopath to say the least.Tommy was one gangster that no one would want to mess with.

He was brash and would get easily ticked off. He was moody andwould not hesitate to kill anybody. He used to murder people justbecause he wanted to randomly test his newly acquired firearm andwould not mind using humans as target practice. Tommy constantlymouthed profanity and was prone to sudden violent outbursts. Thereis love and loyalty stirring beneath the surface but it is unable toexist as a result of his obsession with power and status. TommyDeVito is still one of the most obscene, violent, twisted charactersever imagined. Joe Pesci is the one who played the unforgettablerole of Tommy De Vito. Pesci refused to let Tommy be a one-shadedcharacter but instead brought out multiple facets to this dreadedgangster.

Don Vito Corleone (The Godfather series)

No other character in history is per-haps as iconic as that of Don Vito

Corleone in The Godfather. He was thehead of the Corleone family, one of theleading crime syndicates in New Yorkcity. Rarely does one see any emotionon his face. His movements are subtleyet effective enough to display withoutmuch effort just how much power andrespect he commanded. He was anambitious Sicilian immigrant who builtan empire purely based on his personalcode of honour. He was ruthless attimes but at the same time he was notexactly encouraging of vicious crimes bygangs and so sought to control crime inNew York by either consuming or elimi-nating rival gangs. His clout was sooverwhelming that friends and associ-ates soon took to calling him TheGodfather. A title that breathes powerand respect. Marlon Brando who isundoubtedly one of the best actors inHollywood essayed this role with greatpanache. He is at his finest when he isadvising his son Michael as to how hisenemies will move around him.

Tony Montana (Scarface)

Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee came to Miami in 1980 as a resultof the Mariel Boatlift, and became a drug cartel kingpin during the

cocaine boom of the 1980s. His greed led to his ultimate downfall. InMiami he worked for drug lord Robert Loggia and soon rose to thetop of Florida’s crime chain, appropriating Loggia’s cokehead mistressin the process. Tony’s lust for power could never be sated. His mantrain life can be summed up in these lines: “In this country, you gottamake the money first. Then when you get the money, you get thepower. Then when you get the power, then you get the woman.” Hisanimalistic personality, and his devil-may-care attitude is what makesTony, one to remember. A suave Al Pacino as Tony Montana onlyupped the thrill factor.

Michael Corleone (The Godfather series)

If anything in this life is certain, if history has taught us anything, it is thatyou can kill anyone, these were the words of the youngest son of Don Vito

Corleone. The one who soon rose to take control of the Italian mafia’s mostdreaded family. Michael was the family hero, the most respectable son ofthe Don, who had the highest hopes for Michael in the “legitimate world.”But when his father was shot, Michael could not keep himself from gettingmixed-up in the family business. Inevitably, he took over. Michael was kindyet cruel, powerful yet weak. He was a masterful, strategic thinker spurredby vengeance. All his life he worked to make his family legitimate butfailed.

His was a lost cause. Anything he attempted to salvage ended in disas-ter, he lost his marriage, lost his daughter, lost all of his brothers, tried toescape that life, could not find redemption, and in the end, he died alone. The character was brilliantly essayed by Al Pacino.

2012: A YEAR OF REMAKES

After churning out all types of movies in the pastdecade or so, it seems that Bollywood is fresh outof ideas. Be prepared, 2012 is going to be the yearin which the industry is going to see film-makersattempting to recreate the tried-and-tested formu-lae of age-old hits...

Isha [email protected]

What is the magic formu-la that makes a remakework? Is it the actors,or is it the script? Or

both. No one can say because there

are no rules. Indian cinema hasnever shied away from taking cre-ative inspiration. Some remakes inthe past have turned out to bechartbusters while some vanishedwithout a trace. We give you anupdate on what awaits you in theyear ahead

Players: There have been unofficial remakes oftons of Hollywood flicks , which are more oftenthan not dubbed as borrowed inspiration. FinallyBollywood has decided to give credit and itstarts with Players which will kick-start the yearof remakes. The movie is said to be the officialremake of the english blockbuster of 1969, TheItalian Job, credited to be one of the best Britishmovies by Peter Collinson. Abhishek Bachchan,Bipasha Basu, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deoldirected by the duo Abbas Mastan. The movieboasts of locales like New Zealand and NorthPole and of course the heist sequence apartfrom our cool dudes and babes doing the regu-lar dance and song sequences.

Ekk Deewana Tha: A remake of the Tamilmovie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa by GautamMenon, next year one can see a hindi remake ofthe same movie. The film has already beenremade in Telugu as Ye Maya Chesave this year. The Tamil version actors Simbhu and Trisha willbe replaced by Prateik and Amy Jackson in theBollywood remake.

Bol Bachchan: Another movie to look forwardto is an all time favourite from the yesteryears.Yes folks, the remake of original masterpieceGolmaal by Hrishikesh Mukherji is here. Aftermaking comedy sequels with the same name,Rohit Shetty is finally coming up with officialremake of the real flick. The original charactersessayed by Utpal Dutt and Amol Palekar willnow be played by Ajay Devgn and AbhishekBachchan. Whether the remake will match upto the expectations set by the original or not, issomething that remains to be seen.

Chasme Buddoor: Now this is a moviewhose remake rights had been brought longbefore anyone even agreed to do the movie. But eventually the comedy king David Dhawandecided to take up the project. The characterplayed by Farooq Sheikh in the original will bereprised by Pakistani actor-singer Ali Zafar andthe female lead played by Deepti Naval backthen will now be essayed by an actor from theSouth — Tapsee. The movie will also see starslike Juhi Chawla, Rishi Kapoor, Anupam Kherand Siddharth.

Agneepath: Next year comes another age-old cult, Agneepath in whichAmitabh Bachchan’s gained glory as the inimitable Vijay DeenanathChauhan. Now in the much-anticipated remake, by Karan Johar you haveHrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt playing the historical characters. Havingroped in veterans like Rishi kapoor, there are bound to be new additions andtwists to the original. Interestingly, Mithun Chakravarti’s much-appreciatedrole from the original seems to be absent from the remake. Already, themovie’s soundtrack is making the rounds, particularly its item song ChikniChameli sizzling the screens. Here’s hoping the remake will do better at thebox office than the lukewarm response its predecessor got.

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, all set to make her

Hollywood debut with Singularity, feels there isno hierarchy in Hollywood unlike the Indian film

industry. “The idea is to love films and to createfilms and that we are doing here and they are doing there. I have

the Indian film industry,” the actress said whenasked about the major differences that she

“During the year-end, bikers while enjoying them-selves often do not wear helmets and ride rashly. So wecame up with this catchy line to attract the attention of

errant riders,” police commissioner RK Pachnanda said.“We want them to be happy but at the same time they

must follow the safety rules,” he added. The sign boards show two riders on a bike without hel-

mets. Above them is written ‘Why this herogiri, herogiri, herogiri di?’ and below is the request to wear helmets.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
