The POTUS On“My BrOTher’S KeePer” InITIaTIve

President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative to improve opportunities for boys and men of color is in step with our times.Three years ago, I sat with George Soros and an eclectic group of black leaders in a small New York hotel room, courtesy of Shawn Dove of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement. Soros explained why being a Hungarian Jew who lived through the Holocaust helps him to see dangerous patterns that threaten democratic society.

Over the past five years, Soros has pledged about $80 million of his own money to support a healthier America by helping black males out of

the dangerous patterns that threaten them. In August 2011, his friend Michael Bloomberg announced a similar $127 million public-private initiative in New York, which included $30 million from Soros.

Bloomberg and Soros were the boldest but certainly not the only philanthropists to take this position. In April 2013, five foundation leaders convened their peers on this subject: Bob Ross, president of The California Endowment; Ken Zimmerman, director of U.S. programs for the Open Society Foundations; Alberto Ibargüen, president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, president of the

Trabian Shorters (above left) is founding CEO of BMe Community and former vice president of communities at Knight Foundation. The following is cross-posted from The Miami Herald. Photo credit: Flickr user Knight Foundation.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; and Emmett Carson, president of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. By the end of the day more than two dozen foundation heads had signed a pledge to create more opportunities for boys and men of color.

These leaders, who are fiercely independent, all agree that America is better off when more boys and men of color are able to fully participate in society. That’s a historic decision and it marks a potential turning point. These commitments are a first for philanthropy and a first for a U.S. president.Even though Jim Crow-style laws still sit on the books and legacy media still parades negative images of black and brown males through our minds constantly, their days are numbered. There are simply too many black and brown men and their friends of all races and genders – patriots, students, entrepreneurs and donors – who are in positions of influence and see boys and men of color as assets to society. Here are examples of what I mean: 1. Patriotic: Twenty-five percent of

black men in America are already military veterans. No other group serves their country in as high a proportion.

2. aspiring: More than 2 million black men have at least one college degree, and about 1.4 million are in college now.

3. enterprising: The percentage of black people who create businesses is growing at more than twice the national average, and 60 percent of those entrepreneurs are black men.

4. Generous: Black households give 25 percent more of their income to charities than do white households.

Patriotic, aspiring, enterprising and generous are everyday attributes of black males. We all actually know and experience black men in the categories above. That’s reality. I founded BMe Community because I believe we can have more caring and prosperous communities inspired by black men.

But to do that, we must appreciate them as assets, engage them and their friends on the values we have in common and endeavor to “build” together rather than to “fix” each other.

BMe Community is a fast-growing mission-driven social enterprise that works to “build caring and prosperous communities, inspired by black men.” Headquartered in Miami, BMe has thousands of members across the country, and operates a news and content service and the BMe Leaders program in Baltimore, Detroit and Philadelphia. In the last year, 70 BMe Leaders have helped more than 65,000 of their neighbors in areas ranging from mentoring and education to public safety and financial health. BMe was created with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Open Society Foundations and The Heinz Endowments, as well as individual donations. n

When President Barack Odama went on national tour

campaigning for support for his Affordable Care Act, infamously referred to as ObamaCare, it was his speeches from the pulpit that won the support of the African American community who knew all too well the cost of not having adequate health insurance.

The African American community was then and still is now in full support of this healthcare initiative.

There are a lot of things that can be said about the rollout of Obamacare. But one thing certain is that it failed to reach significant numbers of uninsured working African Americans who represented the largest number of the uninsured in the state of Maryland. No need to point any fingers.

Both the federal and state systems had glitches. Anthony Brown will only take credit for the legislation and not the glitches. Yet, the state Democrats won’t conduct an investigation until after the summer primary elections.

The architects and legislators made bold projections without considering both technical, managerial and organizational set-backs.

Here in Maryland (where the state ill-spent over $250 million), Noridian, the software developer and EngagePoint their subcontractor, along with HP Computers and Samsung cell phones were major benefactors. Locally $24 million was disproportionately divided among 16 agencies in a region where the majority of the population is African American. Needless to say Healthcare Access Maryland totally missed their mark.

heaLTh Care In The PULPIT

Notwithstanding, the Affordable Care Act is very important and much needed.

Economically the more people that are covered means the more money saved on poor health care choices resulting from not having coverage for preventive healthcare and ending up in an emergency room for treatments that don’t warrant that attention or costs.

The Black Church provides the most logical communication opportunity to reach both uninsured working and non-working African Americans. All of the statistics point to this truth, yet the Black Church was the most ignored approach to insure that the African American community had access to enrollment information. The states and federal government

will be saved by the clergy who has the genuine concern for his or her beloved church members.

Healthcare in the pulpit is not just a catchy theme. The Black Church has always served the African American community as a socio-economic anchor. The health care exchange, the insurers along with their providers and vendors will need the credibility of the pulpit to educate those fellowshipping at the hundreds of churches throughout the city of Baltimore and the state.

For the state to not fully engage the Black Church was a missed opportunity to really impact the African American population in a positive manner. n

Think On These ThingsBy Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

~Reprint from March 2011~

Challenge Your MountainConcerning the works of my hands command ye me. ~Isaiah 45:11-12

What difference knowing this makes in the way we live our lives! Our awareness of this invitation from God wakes us up from the hesitant, halting life of unbelief.

We are given the authority to command God’s works: the sun, the moon, the stars, light, darkness, peace, evil, the heavens, the seas, the skies and all that comes from them: rain, snow, floods, hail.

All things that are upon the earth and in the earth - we can command. All of its resources - we can command.

We can command God concerning it all.

Let us not forget who we are. We are man and have been put upon the earth to have dominion over the works of God’s hands.

We can -still the sun -shut the heavens...and open them again -forbid death -level the mountains.

We are in the position to command the works of God’s hands with authority firmly rooted in faith.

We can -cast mountains into the sea -calm the raging waves -loose the shackled and set them free -open gates -roll away the stone.

Challenge your mountain. Speak to it and tell it where to go. Watch it move out of your way.

Every circumstance, every situation you find yourself in has been created by God. Command your way through to victory.

Speak one time and it shall be done! Take the faith of God. Take it! It is your birth right. Challenge your mountain.

March is here so let’s spring into action with giving.

Thanks for the in-depth conversation from a Baltimore church member who shall (as always) remain nameless.

The topic of giving came up. What is our real problem with giving?

Why is it that people of the catholic, Jewish and protestant faith appeared to be much further ahead in the financial game. This church member is prudent and financially responsible with a security clearance and decent credit score. Yet they struggle with tithes, offering and family obligations.

We know collectively there is real wealth in our communities. The Black retail hair care products industry is a billion dollar industry. Weave hair brokers don’t even cater to our people they sell to the Asian suppliers. The nail care industry itself a multi-million dollar industry.

Yet very seldom do we see either of these industries connected with a place of worship. Perhaps we should.

Good pastors are great businessmen & woman.

Traditionally, our places of worship are connected to non-profit types of organizations. However, it’s the for profit business that generate the real wealth needed to support our church and each other. Perhaps the real problem with giving is we just don’t know how.

We often depend on our pastors and church for so much even financial wisdom. Especially, the biblical principals of giving. This must be constantly reinforced.

Giving was easier when all priorities and perspectives were put in order when they passed the collection plate around. 10% tithes, 10% savings which went directly to the church credit union.

I felt good about giving and I watched my saving grow. No easy access banking hours, no debit cards, no checks, just planned withdrawals for a few hours after church service. No cash was given out only a cashiers check or money order. This was perfect for me because it provided the discipline I needed to afford the down payment my first house. Some how we must learn how to give and get out of this poverty mentality.

Other faiths may have financial practices that enable them to support their own business and lifestyles. If you know what works financially so that we may give more. Share it with the readers. All emails and comments as always remain anonymous.
