Welcome to Philips’ Power Management selection guide 2005. Inside you will discover

just how easily you can tap into the design freedom offered by our Power Management

portfolio. Our advanced power technologies and products cover virtually all aspects of

power and power management – from the smallest µTrenchMOS devices for powering

mobile handsets up to dedicated power management ICs for DVD+RW applications.

It is this dedicated application of power that helps makes Philips portfolio stand out.

Our broad and deep range includes automotive ‘Smart Power’ devices that deliver

sophisticated control and protection, while our STARplug ICs provide turnkey solutions

for a host of power plug applications. This is backed up by proven technologies that

ensure for example our cost-effective GreenChip™ SMPS ICs deliver optimized

efficiency and our bipolar transistors provide best-in-class performance. But it is not

just in our product families that Philips’ innovations are driving Power Management to

reach new levels. In packaging, developments such as our ‘Loss Free’ LFPAK are

bringing improved electrical and thermal properties to miniature devices.

Your choice for power management solutions could not be simpler. Supported by our

global organization and meeting the requirements of a wide variety of applications, we

have the power to ensure consumers are always connected.

Meeting constantly evolving lighting needs, Philips offers oneof the most extensive portfolios of integrated solutions. Ourdriver ICs for lighting ballasts include full-bridge drivers, fab-ricated in Philips' high voltage DMOS process and ideal foruse as commutators for HID lamps; and half-bridge driverssuited to control and driving of TL and CFL lamps. Each hasa number of adjustable features such as oscillator frequency, and preheat and ignition times.* The new UBA2032 is a high voltage monolithic integrated circuit

made in the EZ-HV SOI process. The circuit is designed for drivingthe MOSFETs in a full bridge configuration. In addition, it features adisable function, an internal adjustable oscillator and an externaldrive function with a high-voltage level shifter for driving thebridge. To guarantee an accurate 50 pct. duty factor, the oscillatorsignal can be passed through a divider before being fed to the output drivers.

W hy c h o o s eP h i l i p s S e m i c o n d u c t o r s ?Philips covers almost the entire energy chain for portable powerand battery management in mobile devices, including intelligentchargers and state-of-charge indicators. Manufactured inadvanced BiCMOS technology, our fast-charge controller ICsintegrate the complex mix of requirements necessary for all bat-tery types, and for both linear and switched-mode systems. Ourportfolio also includes devices that switch from current to volt-age regulation at battery specific voltages for Li-Ion and SLAbatteries, and state-of-charge / discharge indicators and fast-charge controllers for low-voltage NiMH- and NiCd-poweredapplications.

The SAA1501T is intended to be used as a battery monitor and chargecurrent control circuit in rechargeable battery systems.During battery charging, the charge current and charge time are regis-tered in a Coulomb counter. During discharge, the discharge current andtime are recorded. The momentary charge amount of the batteries canbe displayed either on an LCD screen or on an LED bargraph. Using theSAA1501T, intelligent batteries or intelligent battery powered systemscan be easily designed with only a few external components. The SAA1064 LED-driver is a bipolar integrated circuit made in an I2Lcompatible 18 volts process. The circuit is especially designed to drivefour 7-segment LED displays with decimal point by means of multiplexingbetween two pairs of digits.

The new TEA162x devices are the latest addition to Philips'highly efficient STARplugTM range of controller ICs for low-power switched mode power supplies (SMPSs). Like allSTARplugTM products, they operate directly from rectifieduniversal mains supplies: 80 to 276 V. Essentially turnkeysolutions, they dramatically cut design-in time for newpower supplies in many applications.* The device includes a high voltage power switch and a circuit for

start-up directly from the rectified mains voltage.A dedicated circuit for valley switching is built in, which makes a very efficientslim-line electronic power-plug concept possible.

* Typical application areas for the STARplugTM are: chargers, adapters,STB, DVD, CD,TV/Monitor standby supplies etc.

The GreenChipTM II is the second generation of greenSwitched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) controller ICs operat-ing directly from the rectified universal mains.A high level ofintegration leads to a cost effective power supply with a verylow number of external components.* The special built-in green functions allow the efficiency to be opti-

mum at all power levels. This holds for quasi-resonant operation athigh power levels, as well as fixed frequency operation with valleyswitching at medium power levels. At low power (standby) levels, the system operates at reduced frequency and with valley detec-tion.

* If burst mode operation is applied, the standby power level caneven be reduced to below 1 W.

...SiliconMAX* Philips Semiconductors´ SiliconMAX power MOSFET range brings

the benefits of ultra-low RDS(ON) and high-speed switching toapplications requiring transistors with voltage ratings up to 200 V.By significantly reducing power dissipation, these high-performanceMOSFETs enable many applications to move from through-hole toSMD packages

* Lower RDS(ON) for the same size transistor package* Smaller package size for the same RDS(ON) value and/or reduced

component count* High-speed, low-loss switching performance* Replacement of through-hole mounting power packages with

surface-mount devices* Reduced heat-sinking requirement* Low system cost and higher performace

The low RDS(ON) features of the SiliconMAX portfolio andthe optimised switching performance of the TrenchMOSportfolio provide designers with a MOSFET range optimisedfor either lower power dissipation or low switching losses.Philips MOSFETs are the ideal choice for demanding appli-cations such as notebook adaptors, DC motor control appli-cations and battery powered tools

Three-quadrant triacs* Wide range of triacs meets the needs of the general industrial and

home appliance O.E.M* The most comprehensive, first choice range of three-quadrant

triacs offers enhanced immunity to loss of control and satisfies theneeds of the vast majority of triac applications

* Three-quadrant triacs do not require RC snubber networks ordlcom/dt-limiting inductors, making power control circuitry morecompact, cheaper to assemble and reducing the overall bill ofmaterials

* Three-quadrant triacs offer improved circuit reliability as they areless prone to false triggering from mains transients

* Logic level and sensitive gate three-quadrant triacs can be drivendirectly by logic IC´s and microcontrollers. They provide simpleplug-in, high commutation replacements for existing industry parts

* Patented planar technologies have been optimised for stable volt-age blocking at elevated temperatures, yielding long term reliabilityin the application

* All devices are rated for the abnormal false trigger condition (Max safe dIT/dt specified)

* The availability of three surface mount packages helps in stream-lining PCB assembly and reducing costs

BTH151S-650R(1)

(1) High repetitive surge SCR in DPAK. ITRM = 60 A, 100 kcycles

Power tool speed controller

Thyristors* Wide range of thyristors meets the needs of the general industrial

and home appliance O.E.M* Comprehensive thyristor (SCR) selection suits D.C. ignition and

half wave A.C control applications in the home, on the move andin industry

* Patented planar technologies have been optimised for stable voltage blocking at elevated temperatures, yielding long term reliability in the application

* The availability of three surface mount packages helps in stream-lining PCB assembly and reducing costs

Note:The BTH151 has a high repetitive surge specificationwhich makes it suitable for applications where high inrushcurrents or motor stall currents are likely to occur on arepetitive basis
