Welcome to the Second Annual Power of the Purse Luncheon!

As many of you know, the Women’s Initiative Network at the Community Foundation of Collier County is about honoring women leaders in our community, mentoring our future women leaders and growing our endowment to issue a minimum of $50,000 per year for programs that help at-risk women and girls in Collier County.

To raise funds for our grantmaking activities, we need your support. Events like this, bring together charitable women leaders and supporters of women’s causes who open their hearts and their purses to help women and girls in our community. Look around you today and behold the Power of the Purse!

One of our guest speakers will tell you about the work that her organization is doing to solve some of the problems that face women in our community. We welcome LuAnne Wahlstrom who will educate us about how the Care Club of Collier County meets the needs of women that act as caregivers for family members with Alzheimer’s.

Our keynote speaker, Erin Brockovich, brings energy and candor and spirit wherever she goes. She thrives on being the voice for those who don’t know how to yell. She is a rebel. She is a fighter. She is a mother. She is a woman. And she understands the importance of role models who can empower women and girls.

Erin’s mantra is “if you follow your heart, if you listen to your gut and if you extend your hand to help another, not for any agenda, but for the sake of humanity, you are going to find the truth.”

And, finally, we will announce and applaud our ten Women of Initiative for 2015. It is always our honor to recognize each year a group of inspirational women who have taken volunteering and civic engagement in our community to a whole new level. What is the Women’s Initiative Network?

The Women’s Initiative Network is a women’s fund whose grants are dedicated to serving at-risk women and girls in Collier County. The fund is governed by a steering committee and is administered by the Community Foundation of Collier County. The goals of the fund, similar to other women’s funds, are to foster positive impact on attitudes and actions that benefit women and girls; promote opportunity, health and self-sufficiency for women; and encourage women and girls to become philanthropists. At the Community Foundation, we manage a variety of fund types and this particular fund is considered an endowment.

What is an Endowment Fund?

An endowment is a gift to the community that continues to give in perpetuity—think of the interest you earn on a personal savings account and then think about an even larger savings account that potentially earns thousands of more dollars. It is these perpetual earnings, derived from the endowment investment that allows us to provide annual grants to non-profit programs. And, of course, when the endowment grows (through your generous gifts), so do the earnings accrued for dispersal, whereas a gift of $1 million used immediately has a short-term positive impact.

What is the Financial Goal of the Women's Initiative Network Endowment Fund?

We need to capture at least $1 million in order to distribute a minimum $50,000 annually for women and girls programs in Collier County. Currently just over $400,000 has been raised.

Why Target Programs for At-Risk Women and Girls?

Despite the dramatic advancement of women in recent decades, women are still far more likely than men to be homeless, live in poverty, be unemployed or under-employed, face violence, or live in substandard housing and have inadequate healthcare.• Worldwide, women constitute about 70 percent of the absolute poor.• 18.3 percent of the adult population (800 million people) is illiterate—64 percent are women.• Each year, hundreds of thousands of people are trafficked—80 percent of them women and girls. Florida residents may not be aware that in our nation, our state is ranked third for most reported trafficking cases.

What Can You Do To Support the Women’s Initiative Network?

Open your purse. Continue attending our events, donate online or mail a check. Open a named fund within the Women’s Initiative Network Endowment Fund or consider charitable giving through stock, a charitable gift annuity, bequest or through a life insurance policy.

One in a Million Campaign

The gift of a better life to just one woman is really a gift to all women.

To increase our ability to continually change the lives of at-risk women and girls in Collier County, the Women’s Initiative Network is working to grow its endowment fund to $1 million by July 1, 2015.

Our One in a Million campaign is just one opportunity for the Women’s initiative Network to reach out to women of different ages, skills, race, neighborhoods and faiths who share our passion for improving the lives of women and girls.

Since late summer 2014, we have been laying the groundwork for our One in a Million campaign by asking the Women’s initiative Network Steering Committee members to seek out 1,000 women who want to be “one in a million” by contributing $1,000—or more—to the Women’s initiative Network Endowment Fund.

Many of you have already made your pledge; you are already “one in a million.” If you have not made your pledge to join the ranks of One in a Million by giving $1,000 or more to the campaign, please do so today. About Guest Speaker LuAnne Wahlstrom

Executive Director of the Care Club of Collier County

LuAnne Wahlstrom is the founding Executive Director of the Care Club of Collier County and has held that position since 1992. Care Club is a not-for-profit organization that provides day care for people afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, related dementias or memory disorders. Care Club also provides respite during the day for twenty-four hour caregivers. Its mission: to offer a therapeutic program in a protective setting that stimulates participants emotionally, physically and mentally.

In 2013-2014, the Women’s Initiative Network Endowment Fund provided a grant to Care Club to provide caregiver support for low-income individuals with dementia. (Important note: 60 percent of caregivers are women.) Care Club is the only day center in Collier County providing that service to our community. Sadly, this need is expected to grow as an increased number of “baby boomers" require these services.

Both of LuAnne’s grandmothers were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and placed in nursing homes since there were no family members to care for them. LuAnne understands firsthand the value of programs like Care Club and the importance of allowing families to keep loved ones at home for a longer period, improving their quality of life. LuAnne is a Licensed Practical Nurse and studied Accounting at Bentley College. She has volunteered as a firefighter/EMT, a hospice worker and a Coast Guard Auxiliary Member. She is currently the Treasurer for the Florida Adult Day Services Association, a member of the Leadership Coalition on Aging and a member of the Golden Gate Professional Advisory Group, working to open a second senior center in Naples.

The Women’s Initiative Network Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Collier County is proud to host consumer advocate and author, Erin Brockovich, as the keynote speaker for Power of the Purse 2014.

It’s been 14 years since actress Julia Roberts starred in the Oscar-winning tour de force Erin Brockovich. The film turned an unknown legal researcher into a 20th century icon by portraying a woman of dogged persistence who was the force behind the largest medical lawsuit and settlement in history. Since then, Erin has not rested on her laurels; she continues to fight hard and win big!
