INTRODUCTION
FOREWORD
This catalogue contains a comprehensive range of standardised stock components, designed for use as building blocks in the construction of all types of industrial machinery.
The use of stock components in lieu of custom-made items can bring many advantages to both builder and user of the equipment in which they are incorporated. Costs may be lowered by bringing the economies of high volume production to areas where these could not otherwise have been attained.
The use of standard, “off the shelf” items can significantly reduce both inventories and lead times. Repair and maintenance can be greatly simplified through the ready availability of interchangeable replacement parts.
WARRANTY
All items are made and tested in accordance with generally accepted standards of workmanship practice. Power and load capacities are likewise calculated in accordance with current accepted standards and formulae.
In lieu of any warranty implied by law, we undertake to make good any item which proves to be unusable due to faulty material or workmanship within 6 months of date of delivery, but shall be under no further liability. Because of the great variety of conditions under which these products may operate, no greater responsibility can be assumed and the fitness of any product for any particular purpose is not guaranteed.
ACCURACY OF DATA
Every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of information contained in this Catalogue, but no liability can be accepted for errors, omissions or changes to product range.

FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS HRC TYPE
Hercus HRC Couplings are designed for general-purpose applications where the demand for a low cost, spacer type flexible coupling is required. Hercus HRC Couplings absorb shock loads, dampen small amplitude vibration and allow for incidental misalignment. Hercus HRC Couplings have integrally cast driving dogs to maintain a positive drive in the unlikely event of the flexible element being destroyed. With the addition of taper bushes Hercus HRC Couplings permit quick and easy assembly. Hercus HRC Couplings require no lubrication and are virtually maintenance free making them suitable for most environments. Hercus HRC finished bore with keyway.

FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS HRC TYPE
SELECTION CRITERIA 1) SERVICE FACTOR
Determine appropriate service factor from table below. 1) SERVICE FACTOR (EXAMPLE)
The appropriate service factor is 1.252) DESIGN POWER
Multiply the running power of the driven machinery by the service factor. This gives the design power, which is
used as a basis for the coupling selection.
2) DESIGN POWER (EXAMPLE)Design power 1.5 x 1.25 = 1.875 kW
3) COUPLING SIZERefer to the power ratings table below and read across
from the corresponding speed until a power greater than the design power is found. The size of the coupling
is given at the head of the column.
3) COUPLING SIZE (EXAMPLE)Read across from 1440 RPM in the speed column
of the power ratings table below, 4.75 kW is the first power to exceed the required 1.875 kW (design
power). The size at the head of this column is 70. 4) BORE SIZE
From the dimension table check that the required bore diameters can be accommodated.
4) BORE SIZE (EXAMPLE)The dimension table shows that both shaft
diameters are within the bore range available. The example shown above is based upon a requirement to transmit 1.5kw between a 1440-rpm electric motor
and a dust extraction unit running at over 16 hours per day. Motor shaft is 24mm and extraction unit shaft is 25mm.

SPLINE CLUTCHES
These consist of two mating components with internal and external involute splines for clutch engagement. The leading edge of each spline is pointed to assist in the engagement, which should occur when the unit is stationary or rotating very slowly.
The sliding component is the Body ‘A’ which has an operating groove in the outside diameter. This can be used with either a Plain Hub ‘D’ or Flanged Hub ‘F’.
The clutches are made from mild steel and for more severe applications may be case hardened and tempered at 220ºC.
The maximum torque, which can be transmitted by the clutch, is generally limited by the size of shaft and key used to drive it and the selection of clutch should normally be made on this basis.

WORM JACKS - HK SERIES
The HK Series of Worm Jacks are designed for applications involving linear movement of the load and may be motorised or hand operated. These jacks are self-locking and will not creep under load.
Types of HK Series Jacks available include clevis, plain, flanged and threaded lifting screw ends with either upright or inverted assembly. Standard screw lifts which can be supplied are in increments of 100mm starting at 100mm raise.
Allowable Value of Buckling Load. The jack size shall be selected out of the table below in accordance with mounting conditions on jack size and shaft end side.
Method of calculation:
Pcr = n · π² · E ( k / λ )² · A · α
n: Shaft end supporting factor. E: Modulus of longitudinal elasticity.
2.1 x 104 kgf/mm² k: Minimum secondary radius.
k = d1
4λ: Supporting length of shaft.A: Section area of lifting screw at minor diameter part.
A = π(d1)²
4α: Safety factor.
α = 0.25

VALVE OPERATORS - KV5 INPUT STOP
The KV5 Input Stop is designed to provide stop to rotational movement at the input end of high reduction drives such as large valve operating gearbox. This enables the stop to engage where the torque is low and prevent possible damage at the output end where torque is high. This unit is designed to stop an input torque of 500 Nm. The unit provides a positive stop in both directions the position of each being adjustable to cover a range of 8 to 190 revolutions or with a simple gear change up to 900 revolutions. A repeat accuracy, at input, of 20° is normally achievable on the lower ratio and 40° on the higher ratio.
Input is through a stainless steel shaft. Output is designed to fit an F10 flange and incorporates a splined drive nut, which can be bored and key wayed to suit requirements up to a maximum of 35mm.
Setting of stops is a simple and straight forward process requiring only a few minutes.

HEAT TREATMENT
The capacity of steel gears may be increased by subjecting them to suitable heat treatment. This is achieved by heating to 840ºC and quenching in oil, followed by tempering at 430 - 450ºC for approximately one hour per inch of ruling cross section. This treatment will produce a hardness of approximately 380 – 400 B. H. N., permitting wear ratings to be multiplied by 2.5 and strength ratings by 1.8. In this condition the gears will not be machinable so that machining operations such as boring, slotting, drilling, etc. should be carried out prior to heat treatment, leaving approximately 0.15mm (0.006”) in the bore diameter for grinding to size after hardening.
Should it be desired to toughen the gears whilst still leaving them in a machinable condition, tempering should be carried out at 530 - 550ºC for approximately one hour per inch of cross section. This treatment will produce a hardness of approximately 300 – 320 B. H. N., permitting wear ratings to be multiplied by 2.0 and strength ratings by 2.0. In this condition, the material, while very tough will still be machinable.
Flame Hardening
Flame or induction hardening of gear teeth gives a greater wear capacity at the expense of decreasing strength. For gears hardened by this process wear ratings may be multiplied by 2.0 whilst strength ratings must be multiplied by 0.8. To give best results flame or induction hardening should be followed by tempering at 200 - 220ºC for approximately 1 hour. Flame hardening is not recommended for spur gears finer than 8DP or bevel gears finer than 6DP except for lightly loaded applications.

GEAR TRAINS
The horsepower capacity of a gear in a train must be calculated for the maximum power being transmitted at any mesh point and is dependent on the driving arrangement of the train. In the illustration below, where gear B is the driver with mesh points at x and y, gears A and C may be calculated in the conventional way. Gear B will, however, be meshing twice per revolution, and to compensate for this, wear capacity must be multiplied by 0.8 and strength by 0.9. Where gear A is driving with B acting as an idler, gear B will still be meshing twice per revolution but taking the load on alternate flanks. In this case the war capacity need not be reduced but because of the continual reversal of loading, strength capacity must be multiplied by 0.55.

MOUNTING DATA – Spur Gears
The centre distance for a pair of spur gears is determined by adding their pitch diameters and dividing by two. Gears are cut to give the correct running clearance at this distance. Shafts should be set parallel to each other and spaced to a tolerance of -.000 to + .002” of the correct centre distance. For gears operating at slow speeds and not subject to reversal, this tolerance may be doubled.
For the best operating conditions the total number of teeth in a pair of spur gears should not be less than 45.
MOUNTING DATA – Bevel Gears
In mounting bevel gears it is important that the shafts be at right angles and in the same plane. The gears should be adjusted in their axial planes so that the back edges of the teeth are flush with one another. Sufficient back lash should be allowed between the teeth to give running clearance.
Bevel gears and pinions of different ratios and pitches are not interchangeable but must be run together in pairs as indicated. Mitre gears having different pitches or numbers of teeth should not be run together.
SPEED LIMITATIONS
For normal industrial applications un-hardened steel gears running together or with cast iron gears should not be operated at pitch line speeds above 1,000 surface feet per minute for long periods. Where both gears have been heat treated or where a heat treated gear is meshing with a cast iron gear, the allowable speed may be increased to 1,400 surface feet per minute providing adequate provision is made for lubrication.
