March 2014 – Arjowiggins Creative Papers’ PowerCoat® paper for printed electronics is forging a radical and exciting path for paper and printing. Demonstrations at this year’s IPEX exhibition at the ExCeL Centre in London (24-29 March – Future Innovations Division S4F311, Printed Electronics Island) and PE EUROPE 2014 in Berlin (1-2 April – Booth A06) will show how the seamless integration of complex printed electronic circuitry on PowerCoat® paper creates infinite opportunities for innovation across a whole host of industries.

Retail, medical, education, entertainment, finance even aerospace are just some of the sectors to benefit. Indeed, the five-times award-winning substrate allows interactive intelligence to be seamlessly applied to everyday products with the possibilities limited only by the imagination.

The intelligent paper can be used for tracking, for security and for anti-counterfeiting, or for smart ticketing and wearable security devices. It makes possible blue-sky thinking around interactive food and medical labelling and packaging, and paves the way for engaging customer, consumer or student communications as well as intelligent information gathering.

Arjowiggins Creative Papers has developed two distinct ranges of paper that cover a wide range of printed electronics applications and print and processing techniques. Its unique cellulosic formulation and patented coating process as well as its impressive green credentials make PowerCoat® a real contender in areas presently dominated by environmentally harmful PET-based technology.

PowerCoat®HD is the original ultra-smooth paper substrate designed for high-definition patterning such as microelectronics and electroplating. With incredible thermal stability, mechanical strength and outstanding sintering capabilities, this range is the ideal substrate for more advanced printed electronics.

The incredibly smooth surface that makes PowerCoat®HD the optimum base for silver-ink printed circuitry also makes it the perfect foil for a designer’s imagination. It is this smoothness that allows for a significant reduction of the amount of ink used for printing in some cases by as much as 10 times. It is the ideal substrate for laser lithography of high resolution patterning (as low as 5 µm ) and is compatible across a full range of printing techniques, delivering superb performances with Inkjet, Flexo, Gravure, Screen Printing and Laser Ablation processes.

PowerCoat®HD comes in 2 standard thicknesses of 95µm and 230µm but can also be customised to suit a desired application. It is available in both sheets and reels, the advantage of the latter being that it is the perfect partner for interactive advertising in which large-scale, wall-mounted graphics and functionality can be united in one powerful medium. Indeed, feasibly it could make a whole room interactive and ‘powered’.

Like all papers from Arjowiggins Creative Papers, PowerCoat®HD is FSC certified , biodegradable and 100% recyclable. Beautiful and intelligent interactive paper-based products make for arresting packaging, stimulating interactive gifts and cards, intelligent magazines and more.

PowerCoat®XD, the more recent addition to the PowerCoat® family of products, is the mid-range cellulosic substrate, designed for high throughput electronics applications, bringing interaction and functionality to a wide range of everyday products. NFC and RFID applications are completely realisable on this substrate, allowing tags to become an integral part of pretty much any paper product.

PowerCoat®XD is available in both reel and sheet formats and in two standard paper weights: 125µm and 200µm. It too can be customised upon request and is an ideal substrate for Screen Printing, Roll-to-Roll Flexo-Helio, Gravure and Offset printing techniques.

All PowerCoat® products benefit from all the advantages of being a paper – it can be printed with graphics, folded, cut, shaped, torn and even burned – all to create a desired effect or memorable interaction.

About PowerCoat®

About PowerCoat®

PowerCoat® is a revolutionary resource that supports the rapidly expanding printed electronics sector. The paper has a sustainable substrate with polymer-like smoothness (as low as 10 nanometers) that offers excellent printability and ink adhesion properties without any plastic content. Its fine surface allows high-resolution fine patterning (down to 5µm) of any solution-based electronic layer. Thanks to its natural roll-to-roll capability, it is also possible to produce large area flexible products in a continuous printing process.

Using existing pressroom environments and processes, the remarkable thermal stability of the paper allows for precision control during sintering (the process which fuses conductive inks to the substrate). Its structure can withstand the high temperatures required for low-resistance silver ink without the discolouration experienced by other papers on the market, and significantly reduces the consumption of these expensive inks.

With its natural properties and incredible smoothness, PowerCoat® makes way for more efficient use of expensive chemicals and inks and is 100% recyclable, biodegradable and FSC certified, allowing not only tremendous saving on the cost of production but also a significant reduction in environmental impact. PowerCoat® is the ideal solution for:• Resistors, capacitors, self-inductance and other passive components• More efficient creation of RFID antennae where less ink can be used• Sensing technology such as walls and handheld devices• Electrodes for batteries, circuitry for display, lighting etc• Integration of intelligent functionality in disposable labelling, tickets and packaging

The intrinsic characteristics of PowerCoat®, including its ultra-smoothness, tearability (depending on the weight) and its amazing capabilities of quick photonic sintering, enable a wide range of applications in any sector with a potential cross-over between the real and the virtual, from advertising, communication/media, design and packaging to the medical, textile, food and pharmaceutical industries. These can range from high volume applications to very demanding applications.
