What is an Authoring Tool? Software that allows users to integrate media objects and create interactive

learning materials. Anyone can use it because there is no programming or building required. Most authoring tools are SCORM compliant. Authoring Tools Assessment Criteria This list is from the EdWeb job aid:

Cost Marketability Experience Complexity Exposure Application Organizational Requirements

    Instructional Applications

Business Pros Makes it easy for even a small

company to build training courses for employees

In larger companies, programmers have more time for other projects

Easy for trainers to learn and use to build professional looking, interactive Elearning modules that feature quizzes, videos and multimedia

Business Cons Flash based Web site content not

accessible to search engines. May hurt online marketing efforts

No way to link directly to a page of content inside a Flash based Web site from another Web site or email.

Education Pros Easy for instructors to learn and use to

build courses that include engaging content by including graphics, videos and multimedia

Rapid development means instructors have more time to interact with students

Can integrate quizzes into the course. Enables creation of a wide variety of

learning interactions allowing the instructor to mold a course to the needs of the students.

Education Cons Microsoft Windows based, not

compatible with Macs Cost may be a factor for some schools Flash content created is not fully

accessible to those with disabilities. Instructor may need to create alternative content for those students.

Education Application: Articulate can be used to create self-guided lessons, units, a course with embedded video, audio, and images. Articulate can also be used to create self-guided PowerPoint presentations for professional development, units, or lessons in which narration can be embedded to go with each slide as well as implementing video. It can be used to set up self guided discovery so the learner has to look around and figure things out on his/her own. Corporate Application: From our experience, Articulate is one of the better tools used to embed video into an online lesson. Embedded video running through a Learning Management System (LMS) can be tough to manage especially if the video is 30 minutes or longer. Some Elearning development software requires the video to be compressed so much that it becomes pixilated or the movie may pause often to buffer. When I have to post a Webinar on our LMS I always use Articulate Engage (the Media Tour interactivity) to embed a Webinar file in .flv format.
