Focus State JharkhandFocus States Bihar

Umed catalyst for growth

Jharkhand is located in the eastern part of India. The state shares its borders with West Bengal in the east, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the west, Bihar in the north and Odisha in the south. In India, Jharkhand is one of the leading states in terms of eco-nomic growth. The GSDP growth of the state stood at 10.22 per cent in 2017-18.

Jharkhand is one of the richest mineral zones in the world and boasts of 40 per cent and 29 per cent of India’s mineral and coal reserves respectively. Due to its large min-eral reserves, mining and mineral extraction are the major industries in the state. Miner-al production ̂during 2017-18 in the state stood at Rs 2,070.39 crore (US$ 286.96 mil-lion) and Rs 844.38 crore (US$ 120.82 mil-lion) between April-July 2018.

Jharkhand is rich in mineral resourc-es such as coal (27.3 per cent of India’s re-serves), iron ore (26 per cent of India’s re-serves), copper ore (18.5 per cent of India’s reserves), uranium, mica, bauxite, granite, limestone, silver, graphite, magnetite and dolomite. Jharkhand is the only state in India to produce coking coal, uranium and pyrite. With 25.7 per cent of the total iron ore (he-matite) reserves, Jharkhand ranks second

among the states. The state’s industries en-joy a unique location-specific advantage as it is close to the vast market of eastern India. It is closer to the ports of Kolkata, Haldia and Paradip which helps in transportation of minerals.

The state has attracted Foreign Direct In-vestment (FDI) equity inflows worth US$ 113 million during the period April 2000 to December 2018, according to data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Pro-motion (DIPP). Total exports from the state stood at US$ 1,116.53 million during 2017-18. During 2018-19 (Up to February 2019), exports from the state stood at US$ 1,136.84 million.

Jharkhand offers a wide range of fiscal and policy incentives to industries, under the Industrial Policy, 2012. The state also has policies for IT and special economic zones (SEZs) offering sector-specific incentives, as well as the Jharkhand Energy Policy 2012 which aims to supply reliable and quality power in an efficient manner at a reasona-ble price. About 80 per cent of the rural pop-ulation of the state depends on agriculture. Rice is the major food crop of the state, cov-ering 80 per cent of the cropped area.

Bihar is located in the eastern part of India. The state is surrounded by Nepal in the north, West Bengal in the east, Uttar Pradesh in the west and Jharkhand in the south. The state enjoys a unique location specific advantage because of its proximity to the vast markets of eastern and northern India, access to ports such as Kolkata and Haldia and to raw material sources and mineral reserves from the neighbouring states.

The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Bihar grew at a CAGR of 11.99 per cent between 2011-12 and 2017-18. Bihar’s per capita GSDP increased from US$ 490.62 in 2011-12 to US$ 655.42 in 2017-18 at CAGR of 10.25 per cent.

Bihar is one of the strongest agricultural states. The percentage of population employed in agricultural production in Bihar is around 80 per cent, which is much higher than the national average. It is the fourth largest producer of vegetables & the eight largest producer of fruits in India. Food processing, dairy, sugar, manufacturing

and healthcare are some of the fast growing industries in the state. The state has planned initiatives for the development of other sectors such as education and tourism and also provides incentives for information technology and renewable energy.

The state enjoys a unique location specific advantage because of its proximity to the vast markets of eastern and northern India, access to ports such as Kolkata and Haldia and to raw material sources and mineral reserves from the neighbouring states.

The state has a large base of cost effective industrial labour, making it an ideal destination for a wide range of industries.

Total FDI for Bihar & Jharkhand, between April 2000 and March 2019, stood at US$ 113 million.

Total merchandise exports from the state stood at US$ 1,345.31 million during 2017-18. During April-December 2018, the exports stood at US$ 1,243.34 million.

New Delhi: After the ticket prices have been reduced, trade fair is ex-periencing immense crowd which is coming from all areas in Delhi to enjoy and experience the trade fair this year. We met some school

kids accompanied by their teachers who have been brought here to en-joy and learn something out of the trade fair.

Bhavya, from SKKPS school, said, “Hall 9 & 10 at trade fair are the best. There are so many stalls relat-ed to business and as I am a com-merce student I got to learn about how people can improve their busi-ness, how they market their prod-ucts. I totally loved being a part of the Trade Fair this year.”

On the other hand, Bhumi a stu-dent of class 10th, added, “I liked international market because it

represents every country in a very gorgeous manner. In the state pa-vilions, I liked Haryana because it is where I belong to. However, the food stalls can be improved, as they are quite expensive for us to have food here and also cleanliness near the food stalls is an issue that can

be checked.” Moniksha talked about how great

it is that other countries are repre-senting their products in India and this makes her feel this is such a warm gesture of our country to let other display their culture here. She suggested, “Maps can be provid-ed as trade fair is very big and we missed some part of it.”

The children from SKKPS left trade fair with a smile and this is the best thing about any event, making people feel happy about just being there.
