We’re in a Multi-Cloud WorldTo scale their capabilities and modernize their applications more quickly, organizations have turned to public and private cloud technology. As time passes and cloud computing matures, many are finding that their organizations have accumulated multiple public clouds, while still operating an on-premises data center.

In a recent survey of cloud users, 93.6 percent of organizations indicated that they would use multiple types of cloud deployment options within 12 months—up from 85.2 percent.1 This multi-cloud (using two or more public clouds) strategy gives organizations plenty of flexibility in how they address application modernization. But it is also introducing new complexity and risks.

What Are the Challenges of a Multi-Cloud Environment?People love cloud technology because it lets them deploy the resources they need to support change, quickly and easily. Yet, as cloud environments multiply, managing them becomes more challenging. Organizations have become multi-cloud due to the efforts of individual teams embracing one or more public clouds to meet their specific objectives. Given this heritage, interoperability between public clouds or between public and private clouds is not yet common. Any team that has the need to work with more than a single cloud must contend with:

Unique Interaction Models: Every public cloud has a unique way for end users to interact with the services that cloud provides. The user interface and actions necessary to request or modify an infrastructure or application service are different from cloud to cloud. So too are the API structures and actions.

Lack of Multi-Cloud Tooling: Many of the management tools that cloud teams use are provided by the public cloud on which they operate. In these cases, the tools work well enough for a single public cloud but can’t address requirements across multiple public clouds.

Governance, Security, Compliance: More and more, organizations are finding that they would like to have a single, unified model for governance, security, and compliance. But because each cloud has its own unique way of supporting these areas, cloud teams are finding it challenging to meet this expectation.

Skill Set Pressures: Having to learn the operating model for multiple public clouds puts tremendous pressure on cloud operations teams. It takes longer to get up to speed and makes it harder for teams to move quickly since they need to constantly account for differences between cloud environments.

A Hybrid Cloud Simplifies Operational ComplexityHow can today’s multi-cloud organizations take charge of these complex environments and minimize risk? A hybrid cloud strategy can provide a path forward.

Hybrid cloud is a subset of multi-cloud, and always includes a private cloud and public cloud. A hybrid cloud strategy supports interoperability between two or more public and private clouds. It enables orchestration across an organization’s public and private clouds, and makes it smooth and easy for workloads to move between them. An effective hybrid cloud strategy will provide a single operational model across both the public and private cloud, to offset the complexity of multiple environments.

The simplified operational model of hybrid cloud is what makes it so attractive to organizations. Hybrid cloud offers organizations the maximum amount of flexibility around where to initially deploy a new application— or where to move it that was previously developed. This flexibility makes it much simpler to apply the application modernization strategy that works best for a business. A successful hybrid cloud approach should provide a consistent infrastructure, as well as consistent operations.

Fujifilm Employs VMware Hybrid Cloud to Respond to Business Changes FasterFujifilm Holdings Corporation, a leading Japanese multinational photography and imaging company, aimed to accelerate business expansion through the utilization of data, and required an environment that could respond flexibly to a massive increase in data volume to support this growth. Fujifilm determined that a public cloud would be the best approach to handle the enormous volumes of data and processing; but due to security, confidentiality, and regulations, they also needed to use a private cloud. To balance those needs, they decided upon a hybrid cloud environment.

Since their existing private cloud was virtualized with VMware, it was possible to reduce both migration workload and initial costs, and to shorten system downtime by using the same VMware environment. Additionally, they were also able to continue using system migration tools and functions that they were already familiar with. Since there was almost no need to change the existing systems, the impact on business operations was kept to a minimum.

Fujifilm estimates a 45% reduction in operation costs.

Consistent Infrastructure for Application Flexibility A consistent approach means employing the same software-defined infrastructure across both the public and private cloud. Using a consistent infrastructure, including compute, storage, and networking, makes it easy to deploy or move an application to either a private cloud or a public cloud without having to make changes to the application so it will run on different environments.

Organizations can start to embrace a hybrid cloud that supports consistent operations and infrastructure by modernizing their on-premises data centers using VMware Cloud Foundation. Cloud Foundation delivers integrated compute, storage, networking, and security as software, and also includes cloud management services to help organizations build, deliver, and run their enterprise applications.

VMware provides organizations two ways to extend a software-defined data center to the public cloud using Cloud Foundation as the underpinning for common infrastructure.

Two Options for Moving to Public Cloud• VMware Cloud Provider Program: The first option lets customers choose public cloud

services offered by a strategic partner from VMware’s Cloud Provider Program. This ecosystem lets customers choose more than over 4,500 partners that are running VMware technologies in their environments.

• VMware Cloud on AWS: The second option is to build a hybrid cloud with VMware Cloud on AWS. This on-demand service is optimized to run on dedicated, elastic, bare-metal AWS infrastructure, and lets organizations manage their cloud-based resources with familiar VMware tools.

Accenture Enables a Cloud Journey for Customers with VMware Cloud on AWSAccenture, a leading global professional services company, has teamed up with VMware to enable its customers to seamlessly integrate their on-premises data center environments with Amazon Web Services (AWS). As the cloud has gained popularity, Accenture’s customers are increasingly seeking better ways to extend and expand their environments across public and private clouds. VMware Cloud on AWS plays a critical role in enabling customers’ hybrid cloud adoption. Consistent Operations for Smooth ManagementConsistent operations mean that teams can manage core processes in the same way across both private and public clouds. It starts with a consistent infrastructure: The consoles used to access element level resources of compute, storage, and networking are the same across both private and public cloud environments. Teams need to learn only one set of tools to manage their Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) infrastructure, whether deployed on-premises or in the cloud.

VMware also provides technology solutions that let organizations manage other aspects of their cloud environments. For instance, teams may wish to have a common, integrated view of all the resources that exist across their hybrid cloud environments. Or they may wish to understand the cost of the services running in both their private and public clouds.

To enable this operational consistency, VMware provides two complementary approaches.

• VMware vRealize Suite: This on-premises Cloud Management Platform supports consistent, automated delivery of infrastructure and applications across a hybrid cloud. Its intelligent operations assist with capacity planning, performance and health management. It also facilitates costing of infrastructure services across private and public clouds.

• VMware Cloud Services: These software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings address specific challenges for achieving consistency in a multi-cloud and/or hybrid cloud environment. Cloud Services help organizations manage virtual and physical networks, improve the design and implementation of network and security, audit virtual machine configurations, and much more. In a hybrid cloud environment, organizations can deploy Cloud Services to augment the capabilities of vRealize Suite or use them standalone to address specific operational concerns.

DFS Adopts Multi-Cloud with VMware to Drive Double-Digit Sales IncreasesDFS, the UK’s largest furniture producer, employs a multi-cloud approach to dramatically improve its online and mobile customer experience. The firm was committed to maximizing service and quality for all its customers across any of its shopping platforms. A joint multi-cloud solution with VMware has enabled the retailer to roll out several IT transformation and migration projects. For example, a new commerce platform helps DFS to seamlessly stay ahead of the competition and cope with busy periods. The initiative has helped DFS achieve market-leading status and realize a double-digit increase in sales.
