– All U.K. trips taken: All members of the public that have taken an overnight trip in the U.K. since the start of July

– All Scotland trips taken: All members of the public that have taken an overnight trip exclusively in Scotland since the start of

July for any purpose (holiday, visiting friends or relatives, business or other)

– All Scotland holidays taken: All members of the public that have taken an overnight holiday (not primarily visiting friends or

relatives, business or other) exclusively in Scotland

– Predicted trips: Members of the public that intended to take a trip exclusively in Scotland before lockdown restrictions were

imposed. This data is taken from weeks 5-8 which took place from Mid June to Mid July.

The following chapters are ‘forward looking’ and focus on trip intention in the upcoming months. Definitions used include:

– Scotland ‘Autumn’ intenders: Members of the public who state their next U.K. holiday or short break will be in Scotland and

between September and October this year.

– Scotland ‘Winter’ Intenders: Members of the public who state their next U.K. holiday or short break will be in Scotland and

from November 2020 to March 2021. Note: This is a slightly different definition to previous reports, which also included October.

– Weeks 9-13: Throughout the report, comparisons are made to the reporting that reflected weeks 5 to 8 of this research. The

questionnaire and sample was identical to that used for this report (Weeks 9-13) and reflects fieldwork conducted between 15th

June and 10th July. The purpose of this comparison is to demonstrate how intentions and attitudes have changed over time,

particularly in light of the lifting of restrictions\\\\\

• Around 1 in 5 Scotland autumn intenders and 1 in 3 Scotland winter intenders living in the U.K. are also considering visiting other places for their domestic trip. In the autumn, the South West of England, the North West of England and the North East of England are the alternatives being considered, whilst in the winter Wales, London and the North West are the main alternatives.

• Amongst Scotland residents considering Scotland for an autumn or winter break, the vast majority are only considering Scotland. This suggests VisitScotland may want to consider communications that convinces residents of the rest of the U.K. to visit

• Across both autumn and winter trips, ‘own car’ is by far the leading mode of transport intended to be used on trips to Scotland, followed by train and plane.

• Scotland residents intenders are significantly more likely to use their own car, and in the autumn months less likely to use train or plane, the former likely a reflection of lower intention to visit Scotland’s cities or large towns. In the winter months, Scotland residents are as likely to use a train, reflecting their near-identical intention to visit Scotland’s cities or large towns in this period.
