BULLYING

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior involving a real or

perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who are bullied, and those who bully others, can have serious, lasting problems. Bullying includes action such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, or excluding someone for a group on purpose.

When and Where?

Bullying occurs during and after school hours. Most students report bullying happens in the school building, but a significant percentage also occurs in other places like the playground or bus. Additional places it may occur are in neighborhoods or on the internet. Kids who are cyberbullied are often bullied in person too. Cyberbullied kids have a harder time getting away from the behavior because it can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reach a kid, even when he or she is alone. Cyberbullying messages can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. It can be difficult, or sometimes impossible, to trace the source.

Deleting inappropriate or harassing messages, texts, videos, or pictures is extremely difficult after they have been posted or sent.

Impact

Bullying has been proven to be a leading cause of youth violence, eating disorders, substance abuse, low grades, truancy, dropping out of school, self-injury, and suicide. Approximately 160,000 children a day stay home from school because they are afraid of being bullied.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the third leading cause of death between the ages of 10 and 24, with approximately 44,000 lives each year. Deaths from youth suicide are only part of the problem though, as more people survive suicide attempts than actually die.

Violence

Bullying can contribute to increased violence. According to the Secret Service and U.S. Department of Education, almost three-quarters of student shooters in school shootings felt bullied, threatened, attacked, or injured by others, Several shooters reported experiencing long-term and severe bullying and harassment from peers.

Mental Health

Bullying can cause an increase in depression and substance use. Obese children are often targeted by bullies, leading to eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorders. A study from the University of Virginia found the prevalence of teasing and bullying in schools directly increased high school drop out rates, aside from other factors, such as socioeconomic status and academic performance.

BULLYING

Which Type?: Read each scenario to determine the type of

bullying. Each type is used twice.

1.

Stephanie started going out with a friend’s ex- boyfriend, leading everyone to ignore her and refuse to sit with her at lunch. Stephanie is left alone at their old lunch table.

2.

Jacob constantly tripped Tyler when he walked by in class. Jacob always claimed he was just teasing, but it was starting to really embarrass Tyler.

3.

Monica just got a new haircut, leading several of the girls in her class to start snickering and making mean comments about it behind her back. One girl even went as far to write her a note asking if she went to a dog groomer.

4.

Isabella keeps receiving text messages from a number she does not recognize. The messages continually tell her how ugly she is and how she is a terrible friend.

5.

Tonya repeatedly pulled Keira’s hair in the hall when she was at her locker. It was really starting to bother Keira and she was tired of it.

6.

Martin is teased for going out with a new girl who does not dress like everyone else. His “buddies” think he is “desperate” and let him know it constantly.

7.

Mark’s “friend” took a picture of him while he was playing baseball that was really embarrassing. It was sent out to several people and spread quickly. He convinced his friend to take the picture down, but it keeps appearing all over.

8.

A rumor was spread about Megan that she still plays with Barbie dolls. Students have continued to spread this rumor until she is humiliated. This rumor is not true, and Megan knows her ex-best friend started it after a fight.
