National Pavement Preservation Study

Development of a National Cracking Test

Page 4: PowerPoint Presentation...Title: PowerPoint Presentation Author: Dave Van Deusen Keywords: MnDOT;Transportation;Presentation Created Date: 5/17/2016 8:14:33 AM

Primary objective - validate laboratory cracking tests by establishing correlations between test results and measured cracking performance in real pavements within a very short timeframe

A suite of laboratory cracking tests will be performed by MnDOT and NCAT

Identify those tests that best correlate with field cracking

Page 5: PowerPoint Presentation...Title: PowerPoint Presentation Author: Dave Van Deusen Keywords: MnDOT;Transportation;Presentation Created Date: 5/17/2016 8:14:33 AM

One project, two locations, two experiments

Pavement preservation, and

Cracking performance

Cracking sponsor states: ◦ Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Michigan,

Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin

3-year national pooled-fund project

Page 6: PowerPoint Presentation...Title: PowerPoint Presentation Author: Dave Van Deusen Keywords: MnDOT;Transportation;Presentation Created Date: 5/17/2016 8:14:33 AM

The objective is to validate laboratory cracking performance tests by way of correlations between those results and observed cracking performance in the test sections

MnDOT is doing this in conjunction with 4 other states and with materials similar to those they typically use

Other requirements include getting at least 6 years of good structural performance and mixture durability.

This is not an exhaustive mix study

We only have 8 sections and mixes to deal with

Very little transverse cracking

Some wheel path cracking, possible top-down

Primary distresses: ◦ Wheelpath cracking (surface)

◦ Longitudinal centerline and shoulder joint deterioration, some raveling

Performance history of both MnDOT network and Cells 16-23 suggests future direction for further low-temp cracking experiments

Types of cracking to be investigated ◦ Low temperature a “given”

◦ Top-down very likely

◦ Fatigue also possible

Production mixture testing ◦ Low temp: SCB-IL, DCT-MN, SCB-MN

◦ Top down, fatigue: Overlay Tester, BB Fatigue

◦ ME Design: E*

◦ Additional: BBR mix beams (related study)

◦ Loose mix, cores

◦ Fracture energy test data analysis: both FE and FI
