r * SECRETARYS REPORT

As you will see from the agenda i do not intend to go through all of theclubs activities in my report. I feel that a report on the National Games

should come from the team manager not a none attender such as myself. Ihave also insufficient information to talk about table tennis or basketball.

I feel it a shame that a sports club like ours should have so few

competitive members but it is of cou£e the members perogative if theyprefer asocial club to "pot hunting" probably no more than £ of our

membership competes*

Swimming is still the best supported of our activities and I feel that

our thanks and appreciation should be extended to Kevin and Ron for all of

their hard work* I should also like to thank Peter for his help incollecting the subs.

As far as sporting events are concerned we were represented by thesame handful of people at most of the events

(see attatched sheet)

I have not received a full list of results. If you want the recognition

you have earned give results in in writing Im not memory man and I doubt

very much whether my successor will be either.

Table tennis on a Thursday has ceased due to the centres changing ourtime without informing us. Phil Bowen is still willing to act as coach

but unless some positive enthusiasm is forthcoming from members I personallywould be loathe to ask him.

The people attending seemed to enjoy our sports day. Nev however

had to do a fair bit of arm twisting to get our own club members to take

part* With notable exceptions like Leasowe many of our visitors seemed to

think that they were doing us a favour by coming. With this attitude I

would like to suggest that the end result was not worth the expense and

hardwork (special thanks here to Nev) and less frequent sports days may bea more successful alternative. m, . ,. n.^.

The weight lifting bench and slalom gear

have had to be placed temporarily, we hope, in store. This is very expensiveand we hope someone can come up with better idea tonights

I would like to tender my resignation in the hope that with a disabled

secretary a more democratic means of running the club may be found. In

saying this I am not critisizing the present committee but I have felt

my self an outsider when dealing with certain club members over'what I

felt to be the best for the club. I would like to offer the new secretaryany help or encouragement that He/she might require.

Thank you all for your support over the last year

Secretaries Report

My term of Office began rather awkwardly with a split amongcommittee members over the filming of fUnlucky for Some1 byntheB.B.C. programme series. Halfway through the filming for thisprogramme several members declared they were not happy with thepresentation of the club, and the image portrayed. The outcome of theevent was that filming was discontinued and two committee memberssubsequently resigned.

I feel these particular events led to a few members failing toattend any more and got the year off to a bad starto

Because attendance had been low, it was decided to join forces withthe YDU for a Christmas party, which in the event was quite wellattended.

The new year saw the start of a very full calender of events withmany sports days and "Have a Go" days being organised under thebanner of IYDP. Unfortunately no record is available of the eventsentered throughout the year by club members but the residents of th$YDU deserve a special mention for the efforfetthey have made to attendvarious eventSoThe table tennis facility at medlock school was discontinued due toinsufficient players attending and the team which used to compete inthe TT league had to withdraw. However, as you know TT is availableeach week at stretford.

The basketball team which has struggled throughout the year in orderto simply keep going is now in effect disbanded and is withdrawnfrom the G.B. league. However, we hope to get a Junior team together, the children from «Lancasterian school being very enthusiastic. ]Swimming continues to be the best supported of our activities andKevin and Ron again deserve special thinks for their help over theyear.

A team was sent to the National Games at S.M. One member was invitedto attend the Internationals and another travelled to Germany withthe G.B# fencing team.To sum up however, although this has not exactly been a spectacularyear for the club and their have been a few upsets as regardsresignations and the disbanding of teams it is good to see that thehardcore of members who are regular attenders are continuing tosupport the club. Many people feel that not enough activities are being offered butwithout a permanent base with convenient storage for equipment it isdifficult to offer a wide range of activities.Hopefully when the proposed Whitworth sports centre which is to beprovided from the Lord Mayor of Manchester1s Appeal fund becomesoperational we can establish a permanent base there and build upa wider range of activities. Finally, I would like to thank those committee members who took overthe work of Secretary in the summer when I had a Pew months off. Ihope the next year will give us the opportunity to provide a morevaried range of activities for those regular attenders and hopefullyattract more people.
