JULY 2013 7 FOCUS ON POWDER COATINGS (AIA) National Convention and Expo in Denver, 20-22 Jun 2013. Newlar powder coatings, acquired with PPG’s purchase of Spraylat Corp in Dec 2012, are based on a high-performance, fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resin system that has delivered superior performance in liquid architectural coatings for more than 30 years. As a powder formulation, Newlar coatings provide the same broad colour and gloss range available for liquid FEVE coatings – along with better surface hardness and mar and abrasion resistance – in a solvent-free formulation that emits zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Newlar coatings will replace Coraflon coatings as the FEVE-based powder coating line PPG offers to meet American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) 2605 specifications. PPG also will display Duranar 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) liquid and powder coatings, which were recently reformulated and enhanced with features such as lead-free compositions, improved solar reflectance index (SRI) performance, expanded colour selection and optimized primer. Duranar liquid coatings offer mica and metallic effects. Duranar powder coatings create very hard abrasion- and scratch-resistant finishes suitable for high-traffic-area applications, and they have virtually no VOC emissions. The PPG booth also will have information about Duranar Ultra- Cool and Duranar Vari-Cool coatings. Both products are formulated with PPG’s proprietary infrared-reflective coating technology, which cuts energy use in buildings by deflecting solar heat. Polychromatic Duranar VARI- Cool coatings also feature special pigments that change colour based on lighting conditions and the angle from which they are viewed. All Duranar coatings meet AAMA 2605 specifications Original Source: PG Industries Inc, One PPG Place Pittsburgh, PA 15272, USA, tel: +1 412 434 3131, website: http://www.ppg.com (24 May 2013) © PPG Industries 2013 Flexo Goes Green: breakthrough in corrugated packaging post printing in China China is the second largest country worldwide in terms of corrugated packaging production. Unfortunately printing on most of the boxes is still quite simple, just to fulfil a transportation function. In a successful cooperation, Bobst, Esko and Flint Group recently achieved a real breakthrough in corrugated post printing by starting the initiative Flexo Goes Green, which stands for sustainability, productivity and quality. All the project partners keep driving for more advanced corrugated post printing in order to serve and support the vast needs of boxes in China. During the Sino-Corrugated 2013 fair in Shanghai they presented a corrugated box called Flexo Goes Green, which gained a lot of attention. The box was printed with Flint Group’s non-toxic water- based ink, FLEXOPAK C, and photopolymer printing plate, nyloflex ART 284 Digital, on a Bobst VISION-160 press, the prepress work was delivered by Esko. The outcome was so distinctive and impressive, that visitors were really surprised: high resolution with a wide tonal range, excellent solid ink transfer and coverage as well as clean printing with high speed. Thanks to the state-of-the-art technology provided by the 3 partners, the result demonstrates that post printing with an extremely high quality can become reality in the Chinese flexo market. This technology enhances the sales function of the corrugated box with high eye-catching moments. Now, corrugated post printing is not only an alternative to pre- printing by offset but also an excellent solution in means of sustainability, productivity and quality. The cooperation demonstrates that these partners together are able to accelerate the application of technologies that address the Chinese market needs regarding sustainability, productivity and quality. They all commit to their new initiative uFlexo (which stands for Flexo for You) to promote flexo in China, so that further breakthroughs can be expected. The UltraPax system enables manufacturers in a variety of industries – such as auto parts and accessories, appliances, architectural products, heavy-duty equipment and transportation – to purchase pretreatment products and powder coatings in a single package customized to their specific performance and appearance requirements. In the UltraPax system, pretreatment products are paired with Envirocron powder coatings by PPG. Available in more than 300,000 digitally-matched colours, Envirocron coatings are formulated with polyester-, urethane-, epoxy- and hybrid-based resin systems to provide hardness and abrasion resistance. Envirocron powder coatings also help manufacturers meet environmental regulations because they are made without solvents and therefore emit virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Each UltraPax coating system is tested on cold- and hot-rolled steel using ASTM standards for salt-spray resistance, impact resistance, flexibility (conical mandrel bending) and adhesion.
