(AIA) National Convention andExpo in Denver, 20-22 Jun 2013.Newlar powder coatings, acquiredwith PPG’s purchase of SpraylatCorp in Dec 2012, are based on ahigh-performance, fluoroethylenevinyl ether (FEVE) resin systemthat has delivered superiorperformance in liquid architecturalcoatings for more than 30 years. As a powder formulation, Newlarcoatings provide the same broadcolour and gloss range availablefor liquid FEVE coatings – alongwith better surface hardness andmar and abrasion resistance – in asolvent-free formulation that emitszero volatile organic compounds(VOCs). Newlar coatings willreplace Coraflon coatings as theFEVE-based powder coating linePPG offers to meet AmericanArchitectural ManufacturersAssociation (AAMA) 2605specifications. PPG also willdisplay Duranar 70% polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) liquid and powdercoatings, which were recentlyreformulated and enhanced withfeatures such as lead-freecompositions, improved solarreflectance index (SRI)performance, expanded colourselection and optimized primer.Duranar liquid coatings offer micaand metallic effects. Duranarpowder coatings create very hardabrasion- and scratch-resistantfinishes suitable for high-traffic-areaapplications, and they havevirtually no VOC emissions. ThePPG booth also will haveinformation about Duranar Ultra-Cool and Duranar Vari-Coolcoatings. Both products areformulated with PPG’s proprietaryinfrared-reflective coatingtechnology, which cuts energy usein buildings by deflecting solarheat. Polychromatic Duranar VARI-Cool coatings also feature specialpigments that change colour basedon lighting conditions and theangle from which they are viewed. All Duranar coatings meet AAMA2605 specifications

Flexo Goes Green: breakthrough incorrugated packaging post printingin China
China is the second largestcountry worldwide in terms ofcorrugated packaging production.Unfortunately printing on most ofthe boxes is still quite simple, justto fulfil a transportation function. In a successful cooperation,Bobst, Esko and Flint Grouprecently achieved a realbreakthrough in corrugated postprinting by starting the initiativeFlexo Goes Green, which standsfor sustainability, productivity andquality. All the project partnerskeep driving for more advancedcorrugated post printing in orderto serve and support the vastneeds of boxes in China. Duringthe Sino-Corrugated 2013 fair inShanghai they presented acorrugated box called Flexo GoesGreen, which gained a lot ofattention. The box was printedwith Flint Group’s non-toxic water-based ink, FLEXOPAK C, andphotopolymer printing plate, nyloflex ART 284 Digital, on aBobst VISION-160 press, theprepress work was delivered byEsko. The outcome was sodistinctive and impressive, thatvisitors were really surprised: highresolution with a wide tonalrange, excellent solid ink transferand coverage as well as cleanprinting with high speed. Thanksto the state-of-the-art technologyprovided by the 3 partners, theresult demonstrates that postprinting with an extremely highquality can become reality in theChinese flexo market. Thistechnology enhances the salesfunction of the corrugated boxwith high eye-catching moments. Now, corrugated post printing isnot only an alternative to pre-printing by offset but also anexcellent solution in means ofsustainability, productivity andquality. The cooperationdemonstrates that these partnerstogether are able to acceleratethe application of technologiesthat address the Chinese marketneeds regarding sustainability,
productivity and quality. They allcommit to their new initiativeuFlexo (which stands for Flexo forYou) to promote flexo in China,so that further breakthroughs canbe expected.

PPG introduces Ultrapax packagedcoatings system for metalsubstrates
PPG Industries’ industrial coatingsbusiness introduced the Ultrapaxcoatings system, a packagedsystem of pretreatment productsand powder coatings engineeredtogether to meet stringentstandards for the protection ofmetal substrates. The UltraPaxsystem enables manufacturers in avariety of industries – such as autoparts and accessories, appliances, architectural products, heavy-dutyequipment and transportation – topurchase pretreatment productsand powder coatings in a singlepackage customized to theirspecific performance andappearance requirements. In theUltraPax system, pretreatmentproducts are paired withEnvirocron powder coatings byPPG. Available in more than300,000 digitally-matched colours,Envirocron coatings are formulatedwith polyester-, urethane-, epoxy-and hybrid-based resin systems toprovide hardness and abrasionresistance. Envirocron powdercoatings also help manufacturersmeet environmental regulationsbecause they are made withoutsolvents and therefore emitvirtually no volatile organiccompounds (VOCs). Each UltraPaxcoating system is tested on cold-and hot-rolled steel using ASTMstandards for salt-spray resistance, impact resistance, flexibility (conicalmandrel bending) and adhesion.
