PPPoE server Configuration Guide

Introduction

PPPoE is a specification for connecting the users on an Ethernet to the Internet through a common broadband medium, such as a single Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) line, wireless device or cable modem. PPPoE allows ISPs to use their existing Radius authentication systems from their Dial-Up service on a Broadband / Ethernet based service. The PPPoE standard helps access providers manage their broadband service delivery, and it can also improve the ease of use for DSL and cable modem customers.

How it works

When the logon request is received by 24online from the user using PPPoE client, 24online authenticates and authorizes the user, leases the IP address and allows user to access the Internet. User will be able to surf only if user authenticated and authorized. When user is authenticated and authorized, user will be able to surf according to the user specific policies defined by 24online. Guest service is automatically applied when user is not an authorised user. User could be unautherised because:

1. Any of the user specific policies – Surfing Quota policy, Access time policy, Bandwidth policy, Data transfer policy (if Data Transfer add on module is registered) has expired

2. User is deactive User is leased IP address from the default pool defined in 24online and is applied guest profile which allows user to view his/her account status but doesnot allow Internet access. The ‘Default’ pool and ‘Guest’ profile are predefined in 24online.
