What is Ecosystems-‐Based AdaptaRon?
¨ “the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services
¨ to help people adapt to the adverse effects of climate change”.
¨ The “sustainable management, conservaRon and restoraRon of ecosystems,
¨ as part of an overall adaptaRon strategy
¨ that takes into account the mulRple social, economic and cultural co-‐benefits
¨ for local communiRes”.

1. SDGs with direct links to EbA
The proposed SDGs include two goals directly focused on biodiversity:
¨ Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the OCEANS, seas and marine resources for sustainable development; and
¨ Goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS, sustainably manage forests, combat deser/fica/on, and halt and reverse land degrada/on and halt biodiversity loss

The proposed SDGs include 1 goal directly focused on climate change:
¨ Goal 13. Take urgent ac/on to combat climate change and its impacts*
¨ *The text clearly acknowledges that the UNFCCC is the primary interna/onal, intergovernmental forum for nego/a/ng the global response to climate change

2. SDGs with indirect links to EbA
¨ The POVERTY goal (Goal 1) highlights the need for access by all men and women, par/cularly the poor and the vulnerable, to land and natural resources
¨ The FOOD SECURITY goal (Goal 2) promotes resilient agriculture that helps maintain ecosystems, and gene/c diversity of seeds, plants and animals, with equitable benefits from the use of gene/c resources
¨ Tthe WATER goal (Goal 6) seeks to protect and restore water-‐related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes.
