Welcome toP&R Herefords

25th ANNIVERSARY & INAUGURAL

PRODUCTION SALE

It certainly seems like the years have flashed before our eyes since my brother Ross and I merged our FFA and 4-H projects to form P&R Herefords and purchased a lifetime membership into the American Hereford Association.

Now we celebrate that endeavor by offering to you a sampling of our breeding program as both our breeding program and our lives have matured over the years.

P&R Herefords started out the same as many junior cattle projects trying to breed for show projects. As the years passed by, we focused our program more and more on breeding for the kind of cattle that fit our family’s rough ranching environment in western Oklahoma, as the latter was not always complimentary of our beginning endeavors.

A lot has changed in the beef industry since the 1990s and Hereford cattle have changed as well. We believe that our cattle reflect better than ever the type of cattle that is needed to prosper in the commercial beef industry and that the Hereford breed has positioned itself to be a central player in that industry.

P&R Herefords genetics are centered on what we call “range cattle efficiency” type cattle.

You will see the intentional focus in our breeding program of more moderate framed cattle with an emphasis on fertility, calving ease, maternal power and optimum “range cattle efficiency” performance being displayed in our cattle and in their EPD profiles.

We have not and will not chase after gain performance or numbers at the expense of increasing mature cow size, reducing calving ease and sacrificing maternal production capacity in our cow herd.

As you look at the offering in this sale catalog you will often see us reference the calving interval of the females or the bulls’ dams. To us this is the most important measure of a great cow. Has she had a live calf every year and did she do a good job raising her calf?

All the cattle will be on display at Trail from Friday, October 16 to sale day on Monday the 19th. We want to thank our guest consignors, Graft-Britton Ranch and Laubach Land & Cattle Co. for contributing to the offering of this sale.

We are very proud of the cattle being offered in our inaugural sale. P&R’s entire cow herd has been DNA parentage verified as well as all of our herd sires.

Please come and join us on sale day and we hope you enjoy the information in this catalog about our cattle, our family and the old town of Trail.

Sincerely,Paul Laubach

P&R reference sires 201Z, 204Z, 212Z, and 216Z are all flushmate embryo transfer bulls by our B Excell 303N herd sire, bred and owned with Jay Berry of Cheyenne, Wyoming. 303N was a really attractive Oschner L18 son with a special hind leg and hip. His dam was an elite “range cattle efficiency” kind of cow and Dam of Distinction. She was very moderate and had a great udder and production record, raising a whopping 10 natural calves with an average maternal weaning weight ratio of 102.9 in the Berry herd. These flushmate bulls’ dam is the elite HH Miss Advance 5159R donor cow that is also the dam of our Lot 1 sale bull and reference sire P&R Advancer L 210Z ET. These four reference sires are powerful packages of elite “range cattle efficiency” genetics. We exposed the 204Z and 216Z bull together in 2013 so we had to DNA verify parentage on the calves. We weren’t even close on our initial guess of which calves were whose as these flushmate bulls bred so consistent you absolutely could not tell their progeny apart.

• All four of these reference sires are owned with Steve Redgate and Redgate Ranches of Waynoka, Oklahoma.

• Reference Sire• Selling Full Possession and ½ Semen Interest• 210Z is one of the most complete Line One horned Hereford bulls you will find

anywhere in the country. 210Z is long with excellent depth of rib, volume and smooth made. His progeny carry his look. 210Z is sired by CL 1 Domino 320N, one of the most maternal horned Hereford sires in the breed. Few other sires have left such an impact with so many powerful donor cows coming out of the Holden Herefords herd in Montana. We purchased 210Z’s Holden dam, 5159R, specifically to mate to 320N to replicate the outstanding bull calf she had at side in 2008. 5159R was an elite cow for transmitting muscle and depth of rib to her progeny, being backed up genetically by two great all-time Holden cows

HH Miss Adv 786G 1ET and HH Miss Adv 7005G 1ET. 210Z’s elite maternal sister HH Miss Advance 7037T is a donor cow for Hoffman Ranch of Nebraska and Jake Baumgarten of North Dakota. We are only offering this bull for sale because we are limited on how much we can use his pedigree in our herd with the L18 flushmate progeny, the influence of CL 1 Domino 320N from our Holden 1014Y herd sire and the HH Miss Advance 6005S donor cow.

• We will continue to use this bull AI and are retaining a full ½ semen interest. Full possession and use of this outstanding elite maternal Line One bull will

belong to the highest bidder on sale day.

The P&R Sale BullsThe P&R sale bulls have been developed exclusively on a forage-based diet with

very limited supplement feed. After weaning in October, the bulls were developed on short wheat pasture last winter from November until March when yearling weights were taken right off the wheat. Bulls were fed 1 to 2 lb. of 20% range breeder cubes once or twice per week only. We were very pleased with the bulls’ yearling weights when you consider their forage diet versus developing bulls with hot grain in a feedlot environment as all the bulls weighed close to or over 1,000 lb. off the wheat

with a handful of top performers weighing over 1,100 to 1,200 lb. That is plenty of yearling performance for us coming off of wheat pasture. The bulls were then placed on graze-out wheat pasture until mid-May. During the summer the bulls were run on crabgrass and were either fed around 3 to 4 lb. per day of a 2/3 wheat mid – 1/3 alfalfa pellet or 20% range breeder cubes. These bulls are range hardy and ready to turn out.

The Graft-Britton Ranch Sale Bulls

The next seven lots are bulls consigned by our neighbors at Graft-Britton Ranch, Leedey, Oklahoma. It is a real honor to host Glenn and Jean Britton at our inaugural production sale. The first registered Herford cow I ever owned was a cow my grandfather, Paul Craig, purchased for me at the R.B. Graft production sale in 1974. Some of Ross and I’s first cows used in the P&R herd were purchased at the Graft-Britton spring production sales in the 1990s. The family has been neighbors of ours on the Trail Flats for many years. The Graft-Britton cow herd

today is as nice a set of functional Line One cows as you will find anywhere in the country with their non-raised herd sires being purchased primarily from Holden Herefords of Valier, Montana. Our family has used Graft-Britton bulls from time to time in both our commercial and registered cow herds. These sale bulls have been developed very similar as the P&R bulls, running on wheat pasture with limited feed supplementation from weaning until late May. They are a rugged set of horned Hereford bulls that are top quality and ready to be used.

The Laubach Land and Cattle Co. Sale BullsThese nine bulls are all raised by Laubach Land & Cattle Co., registered under

our father’s Laubach Herefords pedigree only herd. Laubach Land & Cattle Co. is primarily a commercial cow-calf operation, but Dad keeps a small herd of registered cows. Since the herd is pedigree only, we do not turn in weights on this herd and thus there are no EPDs to list on the bulls. The cows in the pedigree herd

have not been DNA tested for genetic abnormalities so we cannot guarantee the carrier status of the idiopathic epilepsy gene (IE) that has been identified by the American Hereford Association. All of these bulls are sired by our P&R Advancer L 027X herd sire that is a top CL 1 Domino 5110R son that we own with Noack Herefords LLC of Rockdale, Texas.

Craig Ranches is very proud to help sponsorP&R Herefords 25th Anniversary and Inaugural Production Sale.

My Grandfather and Grandmother, Timothy and

Nancy Craig, made their home on the Trail Flats, purchasing their homestead farm in 1900, where our ranch headquarters still remains today. They raised a very large family by trading mules to the U.S. Army and raising cattle and wheat.

As long as I can remember white face Hereford and Hereford influence cattle have always roamed the hills and broken canyon pastures of the Craig families.

My father Paul Craig and my Uncle Ross Craig instilled in me a very deep sense of love for the land and the Hereford cattle it supported. Some of my most memorable times with them was gathering cattle by horseback and working calves. My mother Nina, and Aunt Emma always brought out the “Chuck Wagon” filled with food for lunch and sometimes dinner too depending on how large the job was. What wonderful memories!

Dennis fit right into the family when I married him because he loved Hereford cattle and he and his father were Hereford breeders as well. He learned quickly not to let my dad and I go to a Hereford sale without him if he wanted any say in what we purchased. Our son Paul has always loved Hereford cattle ever since his grandfather purchased him his first Hereford cow at the R.B. Graft sale when he was four years old.

Dennis and I have been blessed with three wonderful children. Our son Paul graduated from Oklahoma State University and

manages his company that he founded in 2001 with investments in agriculture, oil and gas, and small market media. His wife Maria completed her Doctorate in Education from the University of Oklahoma and is currently the publisher of the four weekly newspapers their company owns. They have two children Alex (age 7)

and Sophia (age 3). Paul has been very proud that Alex has inherited the love of land and cattle. Alex has worked very hard to help his dad get ready for this sale. Sophia is developing into quite a character in her own right.

Our son Ross graduated from Oklahoma State University as well and currently resides on the ranch where he manages the day to day activities of the entire ranch. Ross has always had a burning love of the ranch and we appreciate his hard work in carrying on our ranching endeavors.

Our daughter Victoria graduated from the University of Oklahoma and went on to

graduate from law school from American University in Washington D.C. She is currently living in New York City where she works as a corporate securities and finance attorney for an international law firm.

Dennis and I often talked of having a sale with good Hereford cattle in our earlier married life. This event brings back a lot of memories from the past, as well as a strong sense of gratitude for the blessings of having strong family bonds with the perseverance to keep our family circle unbroken with a continued love of the land and the Hereford cattle it supports.

Once again Craig Ranches is very proud to help sponsor this sale. Dennis and I are also honored to be consigning cattle to P&R Herefords inaugural production sale as well. We sincerely welcome you to Trail and hope you will attend on sale day.

Sincerely,Paula Craig Laubach

5110R Daughters

CL 1 Domino 5110RCL 1 Domino 5110R, “Tank the Ole Bull,” is an elite American Hereford

Association designated Sire of Distinction and Certified Hereford Beef Sire of Distinction that is the backbone of the P&R Herefords cow herd. A total cow herd builder with breed changer and industry equalizer reach! 5110R is the number one maternal milk bull in the Hereford breed and so much more. Elite “range cattle efficiency” herd sire that breeds super easy fleshing cattle and transmits tremendous spring and depth of rib to his progeny, allowing his moderate framed daughters to excel out on the range with their extra volume and forage capacity. 5110R daughters will challenge any bull of any breed in the nation for weaning off big calves with 39 daughters boasting an average weaning ratio of 104.6 on 133 calves! 5110R is a calving ease sire ranking in the top 10% of the breed for calving

ease direct and birth weight. 5110R consistently sires conservatively marked calves with good eye and scrotal pigment. We purchased 5110R in Cooper’s 2006 production sale where he was a complete standout as a calf. 5110R’s adjusted 205-day weaning weight was 810 lb. to ratio 114 (first in Cooper’s calf crop), adjusted 365-day yearling weight 1,346 lb. to ratio 113 (top 5 at Cooper’s), 15.2 in. ribeye scan to ratio 123 (second at Cooper’s) and 3.64 marbling scan to ratio 133. 5110R was never a show bull but few herd sires if any will ever equal his breeding ability to transmit real world, important beef traits to a cow herd. We feel blessed to own him and are offering this small group of daughters for sale, including the elite P&R Ms Advancer 803U cow.

Commercial Bred Heifers • Lots 88 through 94All of the commercial bred heifers are consigned by Laubach Land & Cattle Co.

and have all been officially calfhood Bangs vaccinated, plus all of their breeding and health booster shots (Vision 7 with SPUR, TriVib 5L and ScourGuard 4KC) were given when pregnancy checked in August. They are home raised, selected from the heart of the Laubach replacements chosen from over 600 commercial cows. The commercial herd has been exclusively Hereford and Angus cross cattle for well over 25 years. Angus bulls were purchased from local Angus breeders and OBI in the early 1990s and for the last 10 years or more most of the Angus bulls used have been purchased from Pollard Farms of Waukomis, Oklahoma. The Hereford genetics of the herd have been primarily from P&R Herefords and Dennis Laubach’s small registered pedigree only Hereford herd.

Laubach’s purchased the three Luddington Angus bulls (see below for pedigree and EPDs) last spring and all the heifers carry their natural service from April 15, 2015, to June 20, 2015.

Dr. Gail D. Anspaugh of Southwest Veterinary Clinic of Elk City, Oklahoma, performed their pregnancy examination on Thursday, August 20, 2015, and all of the heifers were called safe in calf to the Luddington bulls in addition to being administered their booster and breeding shots.

The heifers will all be penned together on sale day but each lot will be distinguished by their sale lot tags which are different colors.

Trail Oklahoma took its name from the Trail outpost store along the cattle trail route known as the Great Western Trail or Dodge City Trail, right before the crossing on the treacherous Canadian River.

The trail began at Bandera, Texas and ended most often in Dodge City where from 1874 to the 1890s it has been estimated that millions of head of cattle were driven north to the rail depot at Dodge.

Apparently locals called the trail the Chisholm Trail. There seems to be some confusion of what historians were calling the Chisholm Trail found-ed by Jesse Chisholm and the cattle trails locals claim were used by Jim Chisum and his more famous brother John Simpson Chisum the famous New Mexico cattle baron.

J.A. Mulkey opened a post office in his home before he moved to Taloga to serve as County Sheriff. In around 1898 or 1899 Sam Stout became the new postmaster and moved the post office to his general store in a half dugout.

In 1911 Old Trail was moved to its present location. Frank Kell of the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway Company partnered with locals Timothy Craig and Matt Jones to purchase land from George Callen to plat the town.

Dave Haldman ran the new railway depot and sold sandwiches, chili and stew from buckets, and chicken dinners for twenty five cents to passengers. His wife served them coffee. The Haldman’s also owned the drug store and Mrs. Haldman ran the Trail Post Office.

Mrs. L.F. Walker operated the Trail Phone Office.Jimmy Morlan owned the only hotel in Trail. There were two elevators,

blacksmith shops, general store, and the State Bank of Commerce. Ben Axton was the town barber.

There was an old flyer advertisement found inviting residents to the Rex Theatre: The One and Only Charles Chaplin will be at the Rex Theatre, Saturday Afternoon and Night, October 25, 1919, In “A Dog’s Life” Come and bubble over with chuckles, drive away those worries and blues with deep down laughter. You know CHARLEY can do it. Don’t forget, Saturday afternoon and night. Admission 15 cents and 25 cents.

It is unknown if Mr. Chaplin was performing live or if the Rex Theatre was playing one of his black and white still films but Chaplin was travel-ing the country during that time to sell “war bonds” for the government to help fund our nation’s efforts in World War I.

Employees of the State Bank of Commerce were F.R. Gale and Harry Gilbert. The bank was allegedly robbed in later years the evening after the money had all been moved to Leedey, the robbers found three cents!

George Allen was one of the founders of the New Hope School and the primary teacher was Myrtle Thomas. The principal was Gertie Thomas who would later serve as county superintendent. Dallas Brown drove the first “school wagon.”

The 1920 U.S. census reported 250 to 300 residents in the Trail area. The demise of the railroad and the building of state highway 34 away from the town led to the decline of Trail. Most buildings of the old town including the school were destroyed by a Tornado. The elevator still standing is the only thing that was rebuilt.
