    AdvancedStanding:

    Sheridan recognizes that some students who enter a program at the College willhave earned postsecondary credits at other recognized postsecondary institutionsand may wish to apply these credits towards the Sheridan credential. Advancedstanding refers to the transferring of credit earned at another recognized post-secondary institution towards a Sheridan credential.

    Students may apply to receive advanced standing for specific Sheridan course(s)based on the successful completion of similar courses at other recognizedpostsecondary institutions subject to meeting applicable Sheridan policies.

    Candidates must have achieved a minimum course grade of 65% or the minimumpass for promotion within the program, whichever is higher, for a request foradvanced standing to be considered.

    Mature students do not possess a secondary school diploma or equivalent andare 19 years of age before the starting date of the program.

    Mature students must demonstrate proficiency in meeting specific programprerequisites.

    Mature students who apply to Sheridans certificate and diploma programs mustdemonstrate their ability to work at the postsecondary level in one of two ways:

    y By successfully completing equivalency testing in English and/ormathematics and/or science; or

    y By completing a program of academic upgrading at a level appropriate tothe program of choice.*

    Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academicachievement and the results of Sheridans new pre-admission test for healthoccupations. ALL applicants MUST complete Sheridans new pre-admission test.

    *If you do not have the required English, you may wish to enrol in English

    Language Studies (ESL) program or the Academic and Career Entrance (ACE)program at Sheridan to obtain equivalent credits. Sheridan also offers ACEupgrading courses in Math, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Preparatory trainingsuch as academic upgrading is eligible for Second Career funding, subject to theapproval of Employment Ontario. Completion of upgrading does not guaranteeadmission to the Practical Nursing Program in a subsequent year.

    Profile Program which will provide the necessary preparation to apply to thisprogram. However, completion of the GAS Health Profile Program does notguarantee admission to the Practical Nursing Program in a subsequent year.

    Program Length/Hours/Weeks:

    This is a full time program over 2 years: (4 semesters of 14 weeks each)Hours per week: 18 (daytime hours between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday toFriday)

    Programs starting in September have a four month break (May-August) betweenfirst and second year. The Christmas break is approximately 3 weeks, and breaksbetween semesters are two weeks.

    Programs starting in January go straight through with a maximum break of 3weeks over Christmas and two week breaks between semesters.

    Students will be notified of their class schedule and timetable prior to thebeginning of each semester.

    Registration Fee: The non-refundable application processing fee paid to Ontario Colleges coversapplication processing forone application cycle.

    Annual Tuition(2011/12):

    Year One $4,456.50

    Year Two - Tuition fees are regulated by the Ministry ofTraining, Colleges and

    Universities. By action of the Ontario government, a change may be made to

    year two tuition. For purposes of your research, please use the year one tuition.

    Parking:

    The 2011/12 parking fee schedule is: One Month: $73 One term (September to January): $169 Two terms (September to May): $312 Three terms (September to August): $374

    Books:

    Textbooks and supplies (lab coat, stethoscope, kit, etc.) typically may be as much

    as $600 each term.

    Other:Students in specific programs/courses are required by Sheridan to pay an

    additional amount for materials, kits and mobile technology service fee.

    Payment Policy: Fees can be paid in full for the whole program, or per term. The fee paymentdeadline is approximately 2 weeks before the start of the term.

    Refund Policy:If you withdraw by the tenth scheduled day of the first term, then all fees are

    refunded. If you withdraw by the tenth scheduled day of the second term, then allsecond term fees are refunded. In either case, an administrative processingcharge is withheld.

    Sheridans Practical Nursing diploma program equips you with the skills you needto enter the growing field of nursing. Upon completion of the 4-semester program,you will be ready to write the national certification exam and be registered as apractical nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

    academic qualifications. Most full-time faculty have relevant Masters degreesand/or professional certifications where applicable to their field of expertise.

    All Sheridans programs are designed and kept up to date with input fromProgram Advisory Committees that include representation from employers andindustry organizations.

    Students focus on nursing interventions and effective communication that provide supportand basic care for adult clients. Students learn about the theoretical underpinnings of the

    profession: core concepts of the nursing process, health, and human needs. The clientcentred approach is highlighted as the framework for the provision of nursing care.Students examine the aspects of cultural diversity, individual differences, and self-care inthe context of successful nursing practice. Through interactive lectures, simulations and roleplays, case studies, problem solving exercises, assignments and tests, students develop abroad knowledge of the fundamentals of nursing practice.

    Students have an opportunity to integrate concepts and knowledge gained in the classroom

    with skills learned in the lab and clinical setting. Students examine the nursing process as aframework for their clinical practice. The competences of facilitative communication, basicnursing skills and health promotion practices are emphasized. Students use problem solvingto apply the concepts. The differences and similarities of the role of the Practical Nurse andPersonal Support Worker will be explored with emphasis on their complementary role inclient care. Learning experiences include preparatory work before class in the form ofreadings and watching videos related to the skills: interactions with a teacher and peers inthe practice of skills in a laboratory setting, simulations, role- plays, self-evaluation,application in a clinical setting and testing of those skills learned in the lab.

    This course provides students with the basic concepts of human anatomy and physiology.Students focus on how the body systems work together to promote homeostasis.     Students are introduced to pharmaceutical calculations - dilutions, dosage calculations andconversions using common fractions, decimal fractions, ratios, proportions, percentages and

    basic algebra needed to accurately prepare/compound /verify prescriptions. Participantslearn to interpret and perform conversion calculations involving the mathematicalterms/symbols used in apothecary, metric and international household systems. Studentslearn through a web- based course. Some of the activities students participate in includecontribution to discussions, completion of online assignments and assessments, andparticipation in online chats.

    Students focus on the nursing care of adult clients experiencing chronic medical-surgicalconditions and diseases. Students use the nursing process in relating pathophysiology and

    other assessment factors to nursing interventions and management. The client-centeredapproach to the nursing care of clients with these health challenges and conditions isemphasized. Students examine methods of promoting, maintaining, and restoring health. Inaddition, they investigate the special nursing needs of clients who have alterations in theirfunctioning.     Students are provided with the opportunity to develop basic 'hands on' assessment skillsusing a systems approach. Relevant anatomy and physiology will be reviewed.     In this course, students learn and practice the more complex nursing skills to assist clientsin maintaining and restoring optimum health. They will examine the role of the practicalnurse in conjunction with these skills and the related safety issues. Students integratecommunication into the practice of these skills. Through lectures and other in class

    activities, learning experiences in the laboratory and clinical facilities, students have theopportunity to learn and further develop nursing skills and relate self evaluation.

    COURSE Pharmacology for Nurses 1 Code: PHAR 15288 Hours / wk: 3

    Students focus on the roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse in the administrationof medications and monitoring their effects. Students learn the nursing care associated withthe identified classification of drugs received by clients. The nursing process related to drugadministration is highlighted. Students examine topics such as ethical and legal aspects ofdrug administration, interpreting physician orders, recording and reporting of effects.Through interactive lectures, discussions, problems solving case studies, assignments,quizzes and tests, students gain an understanding of the importance of pharmacology ineffective nursing care.

    Students explore the use of technology in nursing and its application to practice. Coursework includes analysis of the current issues and trends in health care such as evidencebased nursing practice, cultural diversity, community health, advocacy, and political issuesand their implications in the nursing profession. Students examine issues related to ethicsand quality of work life. Through learning experiences such as in class discussions andpresentations, students learn about groups and teams and develop an awareness of thecurrent concerns in the profession. They contribute to online discussions and complete

    online activities such as presentations, surveys and quiz, and assignments.

    Students continue to focus on the nursing care of clients with various conditions anddiseases with particular emphasis on the more complex and surgical experiences of clients,and community health issues.     Students continue to explore politics and the health care system and how these impactnursing practice at the bedside. Through case studies, group work, andmoderated discussions, students are provided with an introduction to the concepts ofleadership and management. Students write practice tests to prepare them for the nationalexam. The basics of reading and critiquing research articles will be reinforced in authentic

    In this course, students focus on the nursing care of childbearing women, children andadolescents. Students acquire the knowledge to assess clients and recognize normal andabnormal findings when caring for the childbearing woman (from preconception topostpartum) and child (including basic growth and development stages from newborn toadolescent. They are introduced to family centered care, and teaching and learningstrategies. Students recognize the role of the practical nurse in relation to other healthcare

    team members in caring for childbearing women, children and adolescents. Through avariety of approaches including case scenarios, presentations, demonstrations and smallgroup activities, students, apply the nursing process in planning care.

    Students focus on the nursing care for clients experiencing mental health issues across thelifespan. In addition, they learn specific interventions and strategies to deal with challengingsituations related to psychiatric problems. Students gain knowledge of the related ethicaland legal aspects. A holistic client centered focus is emphasized. Through lectures,discussions, case studies, role plays, videos, and experiential exercises, students learn theimportance of nursing interventions that promote, restore, or maintain mental health.

    Students practice and consolidate previously learned skills and those related to maternalchild nursing and mental health nursing in a non- threatening environment.
