Transition planning and wisdom from the SeDA
staff dentist.
By: Dr. Bill Davis
Every Dentist's Practice will be Transitioned.
Either the dentist will elect how and when to transition the practice, or the executor of the estate will make that decision. Should the executor be forced to make that decision, the transition will be much more complicated and much more expensive for the estate. You can't plan too early, you can plan too late! Your Retirement Income Sources:
In April 2010, the ADA surveyed dentists to determine whether the recession had changed expectations for retirement. Not surprisingly, older dentists expect to retire later than younger dentists, with working dentists age 65 and older planning to work until age 74. Those aged 55 to 64 estimated retirement at 66.7 years, compared to 62.6 years for dentists aged 35 to 44. Around half of working dentists aged 55 and older have delayed plans for retirement.
In terms of expected sources of retirement income, survey respondents on average expected that family retirement savings would constitute 62.4 percent of their annual retirement income, social security 13.4 percent and sale of dental practice 12.7 percent.
