These modules form 45 credits in totaltowards the Postqualifying Specialist Award inSocial Work (Adults or Children and Families).Candidates study both modules simultaneouslyfor the academic year running from Septemberto May. It is a requirement that candidatesprovide a practice learning placement for aqualifying social work student who they areresponsible for assessing against the NationalOccupational Standards. Teaching takes placeon a Wednesday or Thursday at the ArchwayCampus.

The cost of the two modules is £1,665.Candidates also need to be observed andassessed by an experienced and qualifiedpractice assessor which carries an additionalcost to be borne by the candidates’ employer.

AimThe aim of the module is to promote goodpractice in the assessment of individualstudent social workers, supported bypractice-based teaching, within a particularspecialism of adult, children’s or mentalhealth social work.

SyllabusThe syllabus comprises:• Assessment-based learning in particular

areas of specialist practice• Monitoring and supporting the work of

others• Direct observation of professional practice• Feedback as an aid to learning• Principles of formative and summative

assessment of others • Adult learning theory.

On successful completion of the module, thestudent will be able to:

1. Systematically understand and criticallyevaluate the National OccupationalStandards

2. Critically reflect upon and apply socialwork values within work-based assessment

3. Demonstrate a critical awareness of theprocesses and procedures required to organise and provide practice learningopportunities

4. Demonstrate a comprehensive awarenessand understanding of the processes andprocedures in accepting accountability forthe work of others

5. Critically and effectively monitor andevaluate direct practice

6. Critically review, consolidate and extendcompetence in gathering and evaluatingevidence

7. Demonstrate graduate ability to constructformal assessment reports in whichsignificant judgements are articulated.

Assessment consists of a portfolio thatconsists of the following:

• A self-evaluative report (5-7,000 words)• Reflective commentary on the student’s

evaluation of the placement (1000 words)• A report from an independent Practice

Assessor, including two direct observationsof teaching/assessment practice

• A finalised learning agreement • A final report on a student, including three

pro forma direct observations of directpractice

AimThe aim of the module is to facilitate the transition ofqualified social workers from being enabled by others tobecoming enablers of others, within a particular specialism ofadult, children’s or mental health social work.

SyllabusThe syllabus comprises:• Theory and practice of adult learning, learning

organisations and continuous professional development• The meaning and scope of ‘practice education’ within a

specialist context and the role of the practice assessor andthe pre-qualifying social work student within that context

• Induction, mentoring and formal supervision of pre-qualifying social work students

• Enabling others in particular areas of specialist social workpractice pre-qualifying social work practice requirementsand the related knowledge and values linked to theNational Occupational Standards within the work place.

On successful completion of the module, the student will beable to:

1. Critically review and analyse the national and professionalcontext of practice education

2. Demonstrate systematic and effective engagement withpre-qualifying learners in a particular specialism

3. Demonstrate detailed and critical understanding of the roleand tasks of practice teachers/assessors

4. Comprehensive skills at negotiating individual practicelearning agreements

5. Demonstrate comprehensive and critical fluency in thedesign and delivery of one-to-one practice tutorials throughspecialist skills

6. Demonstrate the ability to undertake a critical interimassessment of a social work student, exercising significantjudgement and accountability for a student’s learning andassessment.

induction timetable & learning opportunities (1000 words)• A practice tutorial process record demonstrating the

integration of adult learning theories (500 words)• An interim student assessment in relation to areas for
