    CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be defined as the ethical behaviorof a company towards the society initiated to build a platform for nobleideas of human values by profit organizations.

The goal of CSR is to embrace responsibility for the company's actions andencourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members.

CSR has become increasingly prominent in the Indian corporate scenariobecause organizations have realized that besides growing their businesses itis also vital to build trustworthy and sustainable relationships with thecommunity at large.

CSR is not a new concept in India. Corporate like the Tata Group, the AdityaBirla Group, and Indian Oil Corporation, to name a few, have been involvedin serving the community ever since their inception. Many otherorganizations have been doing their part for the society through donationsand charity events generally termed as philanthropy.

Today, CSR in India has gone beyond merely charity and donations, and isapproached in a more organized fashion. It has become an integral part of

the corporate strategy. Companies have CSR teams that devise specificpolicies, strategies and goals for their CSR programs and set aside budgetsto support them.

CSR Programs ranges from overall development of a community tosupporting specific causes like education, environment, healthcare etc.

Government of India View on CSR

Government of India has taken a lot of initiatives for upholding CSR valuesamong which lies the famous COMPANIES BILL 2001 which mandated strict

expenditure and disclosure guidelines for CSR activities of companies.

The Bill makes disclosure of CSR spend mandatory for companies with a networth of Rs 500 crore or more, or turnover of Rs 1,000 crore or more, or anet profit of Rs 5 crore or more during any fiscal. It asks these companies toearmark two per cent of their three years average profit for CSR a nd isclosethe manner in which it was carried out.
