FOREWORD
Madhya Pradesh is an agricultural state; approximately 75% of the population depends on the occupation
of Agriculture. The progress of agriculture is state’s development as state economy is predominantly
based on Agriculture. It is the main source of livelihood in rural areas. For inclusive development of the
farmers’ and for state to be front runner in agriculture production and productivity, it is very much
necessary to increase the area under irrigation. Due to climate change and global warming the weather
cycle has seen irregular changes and during a single crop season itself due to insufficient rain the
drought like situations are arising and at the same time, if we prepare contingency plans for drought like
situations, heavy rains and flood appears and due to this entire unexpected weather phenomenon, it is the
Farmer who suffers the most.
To save farmers and overall agriculture from these natural calamities and to prepare them to face any such
situations newly launched Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sichayee Yojana is of utmost importance. In this
scheme, Water-Budget is being prepared for every village and district as a whole. Water-deficit areas are
being identified and special focus is given to them, so that every farm has enough water for irrigation.
Due to deficit in water availability, efficient use of water is targeted and projects involving drip,
sprinkler, pipelines, rain-gun and micro-sprinkler are taken, so that per drop more crop is realized. When
implemented in its true sense, the scheme will act as a boon for farmers and district will emerge as an
Agriculture-district in the state. Simultaneously the life and living standards of farmers will also
flourish and more people specially youths will be attracted towards farming.

Mandir, Ranchod Mandir, Gopal Mandir.
A temple of Lord Krishna (also known as Haveli), which has been served by a Hindu kayastha family for
around two hundred years, is also very famous among the locals.
1.1.3 History of Agar-Malwa District
As per earlier history, one Agria Bhil founded Agar in the 10th century. But immediately after seizing it,
Jahala Rajputs ruled it upto the 18th century. Then it was passed on to the Panwars of Dhar and then to the
Scindia. Sujalpur was more important place than Shajapur itself. Originally it was founded by Raj Karnapur,
a Jain merchant and thereafter was known by his name as Rai Karanpur. It was taken over and raised to a
town by Shujat Khan, the right hand man of Emperor Sher Shah Suri and Baz Bahadur’s uncle. The Mughal
Emperor Akbar took Shujalpur in 1554 and again in 1562. Most of the district came under the Sarkar of
Sarangpur in the Subah of Malwa. Sarangapur Sarkar comprised 24 Mahals and the headquarters had a brick
fort. Agra (Agar) Bijilpur, Bhorasa, Zirapur, Sarangpur, Sondarsi, Sosnor and Shujjapur (Shujalpur), were
some of the Mahals that were identified within this district.
Agar Malwa was the capital of Parmar Kingdom during the 10th Century along with Avantika , then it was
the most popular visiting place of mughal kingdom when Mandu during summer nights was very low
compared to other areas in the regions . It was a division during the India state (some place of them also
present and used for city court and for other government officer) It was a district under the state of Madhya
Bharat after the independence of the India till 1956.
Agar Malwa District became the 51st district of Madhya Pradesh on 16 August 2013. It was carved out of
the existing Shajapur district. Agar town is its administrative headquarters. The population of the district is
4.80 lakh, spread over 2,725 km².

1.3 BIOMASS AND LIVESTOCK
District Agar Malwa known for good quality of milk in Madhya Pradesh. The biggest Cow Century is
established in the Susner Block of the district. Is is known by Salariya Gow Abhyarand where about 10000
cows has been conserved.
Forest cover of the district counts very less area 47.64 sq Km. contributes 1.75 percent of the district area
(2725 sq Km). There are 154712 Indigenous Cow, 73230 In-descriptive Buffalo, 11550 Poultry birds, 450
Pigs, 10 Ducks and 94450 Goats are available in the district. Goats are good source income especially for
land less labours and small & marginal farmers of the district. There is a need to expand the basket of goat
breeding choices by including at least four buck breeds for upgrading the local goat.
Malvi is a famous draught breed of Malwa. Government of Madhya Pradesh, Deptt. of Animal Husbandry
has established Govt. breeding farm at Agar Shajapur.

1.4 AGRO- ECOLOGY ,CLIMATE ,HYDROLOGY AND TOPOGRAPHY
1.4.1 Agro-ecology, Climate
and Rainfall
District Agar Malwa comes
under Malwa Plateau Agro
Climatic Zone of Madhya
Pradesh. In agro ecological
zone classification it comes
under semi-tropical area.
Wheat , Gram, Soybean and
Green Gram are the major
crops of the district. The
climate of agar district
characterized by hot summer
and general dryness except
during the south west
monsoon season. The year
may be divided into four
seasons. The cold season,
December to February is
followed by the hot season
from March to about the middle of June. The period from the middle of June to September is the south west
monsoon season. October and November form the post monsoon or transition period. The normal annual
rainfall of agar District is 899 mm. Agar district receives maximum rainfall during south – west monsoon
period i.e. June to September. About 92.3% of the annual rainfall received during monsoon season. Only
7.7% of the annual rainfall takes place between October to May period. Thus surplus water for ground water
recharge is available only during the south – west monsoon period. The maximum 1627.7 mm rainfall
received in 2015.
The normal maximum temperature recorded during the month of May is 39.90 C and minimum during the
month of January 9.60 C. The normal annual means maximum and minimum temperature of agar district is
31.30 C & 35.50 C respectively. During the south- west monsoon season the relative humidity generally
exceeds 88% (July / August month). The rest of the year is drier. The driest part of the year is the summer
season, when relative humidity is less than 33%. April is the driest month of the year. The wind velocity is
higher during the pre monsoon period as compared to post monsoon period. The maximum wind velocity is
27.0 km / hr. observed during the month of June and minimum 7.1 km/hr during the month of November.
The average normal annual wind velocity of agar district is 15.9 km / hr. The normal maximum temperature
noticed during the month of May is 39.40 C and minimum during the month of December 9.80 C. The
normal annual mean minimum and maximum temperatures has been worked out as 18.20 C and 30.60 C
respectively. During the south-west monsoon season, the relative humidity generally exceeds 87% (August
month) and the rest of the year is drier. The driest part of the year is the summer season, when relative
humidity is less than 33%. May is the driest month of the year.
1.4.2 Geomorphology:
The district lies on a part of Malwa plateau at a general elevation between 335 and 608 m amsl with an
elevation of about 275m. The entire district is characterized by a typical Trappean geomorphology comprising
extensive plain, low lying hills and hills clusters with gentle northerly slope. Western, south, south-eastern
parts are highly undulated with broad flat topped hills, cluster terraces and isolated hills. A number of hils
District Irrigation Plan of Agar Malwa District 13
caped by laterite are noticed in the north-western, western part. The central area is plain with scattered
hillocks. The highest point 608m amsl occurs a few kilometers south-west of Shajapur and the lowest part is
about 335m in the Kali Sind and Newaj river valleys. Bad land topography along small nalah courses and
scarp development upto maximum of 20m are quite common along the rivers. The general slopes are from
south to north marked by a number of small rivers which later join the Kali Sind River.
1.4.3 Hydrology
Decan Trap basaltic rock found in entire district. Different flows of basaltic rock are mostly of “Aa” type
but ”Pahoehoes” and intermediate type are also present. A typical flow unit consist of a lower dense
massive, horizon passing upwards into a vesicular, amygdaloidal or jointed basalt. At places, top of
individual flows are marked by reddish brown clayey material(Red bole) of few cm to 5 m thickness.
Usually the red- bole and vesicular basalt are prone to weathering and give rise extensive black cotton soil.
There are sixteen basaltic flows which were identified by Geological Survey of India in a vertical column of
275m between altitude of 335 to 610 m amsl) in entire agar district. The various flows of basalts are at times
inter-bedded and fossiliferous inter trappen. The description of various lava flows are shown in table 1.4.1.

Occurrence of Ground Water :
Ground Water occurs in different lava flows having distinctive feature like significant primary porosity in the
form of vesicles lava tubes formed due to emanations of gases in weathered lava flows along with fractures,
variation vesicles and its vide spatial and temporal with minerals considerable reduced by filling up with
minerals like zeolites, calcite, and silica to form amygdale. Alternating sequence of pervious and compact
horizon function as a multi aquifer system.
Shallow ground water occurs in the weathered vesicular, jointed fractured zones of basaltic flows generally
under unconfined conditions at some places under semi confined to confined condition due to the presence of
thickly silt clays overlying the jointed rocks in the cases of deepr aquifer. Shallow aquifer also noticed in
alluvium occurs along Lakhunda , Kalisindh , Newaj and Parvati river courses .Laterite development on basalt
is not extensive except in and around Agar town where the traps have undergone maximum degree of
leaching. The hydrogeology of the undivided Agar Malwa district has been depicted in Fig-3.

Fig. 3: Hydrology Map of Agar Malwa (Undivided Shajapur) District.
Ground Water Levels
Variation of ground water levels in a area is an important component of Hydrological cycle because of its is a
physical reflection of aquifer system. As the change in ground water level is directly related to ground water
balance and its continuous records provide direct information of sub surface geo environmental changes due to
withdrawal of ground water. To monitor the seasonal & annual fluctuation, change in quantity and quality of
ground water, CGWB has established Ground water monitoring wells and piezometers in entire Agar Malwa
(Undivided Shajapur) district. The monitoring of ground water levels in these wells is being carried out by
CGWB during the month of May, August, November and January. High frequency ground water level
monitoring is being carried out at many places deep piezometers using automatic water level recorders. To
study ground water regime of the area pre monsoon and post monsoon maps of the Agar Malwa (Undivided
Shajapur) district has been prepared .

Pre Monsoon (May 2012.) : In pre monsoon period, May 2012, depth to water level ranges between 8 mbgl
to 23.40 mbgl. The most part of the district have water level in the range of 12.0 to 16.0 m bgl during the pre
monsoon water level.(Fig-4)
Fig-4 : Depth to Water level Pre-Mansoon (May-2012) District Agar Malwa (Undivided Shajapur)
Post Monsoon (November 2012) : During Post monsoon period November 2012 ,the water level ranges
from 1.07 m bgl to 15.08 mbgl. It is observed that in most part of the district the water level lies within 5.00
mbgl. During post monsoon period water level between 5-10moccures in N-W &south-eastern part o0f the
district.

1.5 S O I L P R O F I L E
The soil in Agar Malwa district are of mixed type and there is no distinct boundary in between any two type
of soils. There are three categories of soils identified in the district area-
(a) Black cotton Soil
These soils are dark grey to black in color, composed of clay and are plastic & sticky in nature. These soils
are fertile in nature and derived from decomposition of trappean rocks having thickness of 15 cm to 2m .
These soils cover major part of the district.
(b) Lateritic soil
These soils consist of sandy loam to clayey loam and brick red to red in colour. These soils are derived from
weathered ferruginous basalt and are found around Agar and Barod blocks.
(c )Alluvium soil
The alluvium is of mixed origin & comprises of silt & clay and admixtures of these in varying properties. The
occurrence of alluvium is confined to the bank of stream and rivers and usually 3 to 4m in thickness.
Agar is famous for its red soil. This red soil is found only in Agar and limited to about 1-2 km outside of it.
Banyan trees, some of them many, many years old, are found in Agar Malwa.

LAND CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of classifying land under various land capability classes and sub-classes is to obtain a
basis fo scientific management of land resources, so as to assign various land uses such as
Ariculture , forestry , Horticulture, Agro-forestry and other mixed land use systems Land uses should not
be planned for short term achievements, but they should be sustainable and not allow further degradation
of basic resources of soil. Thus,
land is classified into eight land capability classes under two broad groups as
a. Land suitable for Agriculture and other uses which include Class I to Class IV (Land):-
i. Green (I)
ii. Yellow (II)
iii. Red (III)
iv. Blue (IV)
b. Land not suitable for Agriculture but very well suited for Forestry, Grassland and wild-life which
includes Class V to Class VIII:-
i. Uncoloured (V)
ii. Orange (VI)
iii. Brown (VII)
iv. Purple (VIII)
Under systematic survey of Agar district, it was observed that district’s major area falls under Class II
contributing about 28% TGA of the district followed by Class III accounting for about 31% TGA and class
IV 11% of TGA. Currently 59% soil is being used for Agriculture & horticulture crop production, 11%
land for tree/forestry,about 30% of TGA land of the district falls under class VI-VIII which are unsuitable
for cultivation.
LAND SLOPE
Land Slope characteristics helps in understanding the soil genesis, land use, relation with Lithology and
land form, etc. Climate plays an important role in Slope evolution and it is generally found that slope in
humid climate are relatively gentle with deep soil and thick vegetation. Land area which falls under very
gently sloping (1-3%)
1.6 SOIL EROSION AND RUNOFF STATUS Soil erosion is a surface feature which signifies the loss of soil from the particular area. Estimation of the
soil loss is important to understand the degree of soil degradation, which restricts the land for potential
agricultural use. The soil erosion affects adversely to fertility status and land use. In Agar district, the major
part of area 55% falls under severe to very severe erosion and 45% area fall slight to moderate soil erosion,
expected soil loss is (5-15 tonnes/ha/year). In severe erosion area which need attention for crop production,
contour bunding, contour farming, gully plugging, water harvesting and provision of outlets for proper
disposal of water are suggested, in order to arrest the precious loss of soils.
Data of soil erosion is not available for this district as remote sensing based soil erosion potential map and data
attached and there is no sedimentary monitoring station.

CHAPTER -2 DISTRICT WATER PROFILE
Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the land or soil. It is used to assist in the growing of agricultural
crops, maintenance of landscapes, and re-vegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of
inadequate rainfall. There is a great necessity of irrigation in agriculture. Due to some reasons irrigation is
needed for agriculture.
Uncertainty of Monsoon rainfall both in time and place.
Irregularity in distribution of rainfall throughout the year.
Excessive rainfall causing flood.
Draught is an annual event in some areas.
India is a land of Rabi Crops. But there is not rainfall in winter months.
Some soils need more water.
Introduction of H.Y.V seeds and multiple cropping need water throughout the year.
The types of Irrigation mainly practiced in Agar Malwa district are:
Tanks:
(a) Irrigation Tanks (b) Earthen Dams (c) Stop Dams (d) Check Dams (e) Farm Ponds
Well :
(a) Dug Well (b) Tube Well: (i) Shallow. (ii) Deep.
Canal :
(a) Perennial (b) Non-Perennial
District Irrigation Plan of Agar Malwa District 21
2.1 Crop water Requirement:
Crop water requirement is the water required by the plants for its survival, growth, development and to produce
economic parts. This requirement is applied either naturally by precipitation or artificially by irrigation. Hence
the crop water requirement includes all losses like:
a) Transpiration loss through leaves (T)
b) Evaporation loss through soil surface in cropped area (E)
c) Amount of weather used by plants (WP) for its metabolic activities which is estimated as less than 1% of the
total water absorption. These three components cannot be separated so easily. Hence the ET loss is taken as crop
water use or crop water consumptive use.
d) Other application losses are conveyance loss, percolation loss, runoff loss, etc., (WL).
e) The water required for special purposes (WSP) like puddling operation, ploughing operation, land preparation,
leaching, requirement, for the purpose of weeding, for dissolving fertilizer and chemical, etc.
Hence the water requirement is symbolically represented as: WR = T + E + WP + WL + WSP (The other
application losses and special purposes are mostly indented for wet land cultivation. Hence for irrigated dry land
crop the ET loss alone is accounted for crop water requirement). The estimations of the water requirement of
crop are one of the basic needs for crop planning on the farm and for the planning of any irrigation project.

3.2 STATUS OF GROUND WATER AVAILABILITY
The entire district, command and Non Command areas, falls under Critical , Semicritical and
Overexploited Category, all the block of district area under critical and over exploited, which is Agar
block falling under Critical category and barod block categorized as critical irrigation by ground water
is developing fast in the recent decades , Block Susner and Nalkheda are under over exploited categories.
Farmers are seen constructing wells for irrigation purpose without much consideration of well spacing
resulting in adverse impact on the ground water regime in some of the watersheds, which has caused the
water level to deplete. Declining trend of water levels is noticed in the south and southwestern part of
the area.
Ground Water Level Trend (2003 -2012) Analysis of ground water level trend indicates that there is declining trend in water level between 0. 1 to
0.17 m/year & rising trend ranges between 0.09-0.11 m/year in different parts of the district
Ground Water Quality
Ground Water Quality for Drinking Ground Water Quality in agar district is assessed annually by CGWB
on the basis of water samples collected from nos. of hydrographs stations in the district. Ground water in the
district is generally medium to high saline as electric conductivity values ranges between 825 – 2530 µS/cm.
Constituents like Sulphate, Calcium and Magnesium were within the safe limit for drinking water as per BIS
standards. Nitrate in the ground water of agar is varying between 36- 270 mg/l. High nitrate in the village
area appears due to excessive use of fertilizers and agricultural waste. Ground water in the district at many
places is saline and due care is needed before its use.

CHAPTER-4 WATER REQUIREMENT DEMAND
This chapter deals with Crop water requirement for domestic, Irrigation, Livestock and Industrial
purposes.
4.1 DOMESTIC WATER DEMAND Total Population for District Agar Malwa in 2011 was 571278, as per growth rate projected population in
2015 is 620000 and in 2020 it will be 5.30000
For Domestic water demand is is 0.000037 BCM .
Based on this information Gross water Demand Whole District is 29.2566 current year .Average Per capita
Domestic water requirement is 135 liters per day; Based on this information Gross water Demand for
Whole District in current year is 0.000037 BCM per annum. The projected gross water demand in 2020
will be 0.000037 per annum. With the increase in population the use of water also increases substantially.
Due to modern living standards water usage per capita has increased multifold. Also with the help of
technological innovations there are tube wells at every home and everyday their count is increasing.
People have also started using water filtration techniques like R.O. devices which consumes more
water.

4.2 CROP WATER DEMAND
Water requirement of a crop is the quantity of water needed for normal growth and yield and may be
supplied by precipitation or by irrigation or by both. Water is needed mainly to meet the demands
of evaporation (E), transpiration (T) and metabolic need of the plant, all together known as Consumptive
Use (CU),
CU = E + T + Water needed for Metabolic Purposes.
Water requirement is a demand whereas the supply consists of contribution from irrigation water,
effective rainfall (ER) and soil profile contribution including that from shallow water table. The water
requirement of any crop is dependent upon (i) Crop factors- variety, growth, stage, duration, plant
population and growing season, (ii) Soil factors- texture, structure, depth, topography, (iii) Climate factor-
temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, (iv) Crop management practices- fillage, fertilization,
weeding, etc. Water requirement of a crop varies from area to area and even sometimes from field to field
on a farm depending on the above mentioned factors. In agriculture total crop water demand is 1.02364
BCM for 2015. Existing water availability is 0.4016 BCM. Hence 0.6614 BCM potential has to be created
for 2015. For 2020, estimated water demand is 2.42 BCM. To accommodate more crops and increase
the productivity of crops, efficient water management techniques like Drip, Sprinkler, rain-gun, plastic
mulch, pipelines and micro-sprinkler will be promoted. Major percentage of crop water demand is for
maize and wheat crops only, which is around 45 % of total crop water demand.

4.7 WATER BUDGET
To prepare Water Budget for the district, first we calculated the village-wise water demand and its
availability, thus we reached out to Block-wise demand and its availability. Total water availability,
we calculated on the basis of Surface and Ground water availability. Agar block has the largest
availability of water potential and it’s the only block in the district, which has abundant water, the only
issue is in the distribution of water, which needs to be efficiently managed so that water can be utilized
in other blocks and reaches to every single farm in the district. All other blocks has deficiency of water
and to complete with it, many structures needs to be formed, which includes Check Dam, Percolation
tank, Stop Dam, etc, so that rain-water runoff is collected and used in irrigation purposes. Every drop
of water is precious that is why advance agricultural techniques like Drip, Sprinkler, Mulching,
etc needs to be promoted. Following table gives block wise data of water availability, water demand
and water gap for current and future.
