The phrase ‘Saral Sur’ means simple notes, which are the building blocks of theIndian Classical music.

The objective of this project is to understand the workings of a notation system andattempts to design simple visual solutions to represent the concept of the art.

The project aims to ‘re-look or re-examine’ how the Indian Classical music is taught, written and recorded and how the methodology of these aspects has changed overtime. It also attempts to bridge the gap between the visual and audio i.e. to visualizethe auditory information such as the characteristic movements and to be able todesign a system that has the ability to teach, assist and help one to learn without a teacher.

p r o j e c t d e l i v e r a b l e s

1. A notation system that visualizes the movement from one note to another using simple visual devices.

2. This notation system manifested into a template that could be used to explain the movement of a particular raga.

p r o j e c t c h a l l e n g e s

1. One of the biggest challenges of this project was to translate information that is mainly in the auditory realm into a visual structure. The information here was the vast knowledge conventionally taught using the oral tradition where the student learns by imitating the preceptor.

2. Another big challenge was to explain the music system to an untutored western audience.

The project proposed to create a system that presents information about the local transport – destinations, routes, and other relevant information in an easy, comprehensible and lucid manner that will allow a user to navigate through an unknown city. The proposed plan would provide the user all the relevant information in a simplified, graphical form into a single database which when accessed would provide the user all the information he/she requires.

p r o j e c t d e l i v e r a b l e s

1. A grid-unit that provides basic crucial information: the bus-number, graphical representation of the bus-route, platform number, visual indication of the type of service and schedule.

2. As added information to this structure, fares at each stop and an accentuation of the main bus-stands within the route map.

3. A grid made up of these basic units showcasing all the routes related to a particular bus stand.

4. Along with this grid, the user is also given an index of all bus-stops mentioned in this matrix with location coordinates for the grid.

p r o j e c t c h a l l e n g e s

1. This project required first hand research to understand the bus route system in the city.

2. Typography played a critical aspect in a project like this as large amounts of information needed to presented in a limited space. Frutiger was used the map route map and Swiss 721 was used for the route numbers.

Mapunity, a Bangalore based company, which has led the development of Urban Transport Information Systems for a number of cities - Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi. The purpose of these systems is to create real-time knowledge of traffic conditions in cities. These are then made widely available through Airtel’s mobile telecom network to city residents, and also accessible online.

I was a part of the team that redesigned the website that dealt with the Bangalore city traffice conditions. This website would showcase route maps for the services offered by the government agency that dealt with the local bus transport system. Simple route maps were designed for a newly introduced bus service. These maps would provide the user/traveller with all the information while travelling by the local bus transport.

These maps were customized for one particular kind of bus service. They provided information such as the route of the route, timings, price charts, location maps and also is provided in the vernacular typeface as well. The maps were also designed to be downloaded off the website and then could be printed out on A4 sheets which made them very convenient to use.

p r o j e c t c h a l l e n g e s

There were some fundamental challenges concerning the design of these bus maps. Firstly the inconsistencies with the base data. There were no official records of the route information such as the timings or the route information itself. The timings of the bus route did not follow a pattern of any kind, so it was not possible to determine an average amount of time between any two routes. This problem was also due to the fact that bus system in Bangalore is not as advanced as it is in cities like New York or London for example a typical bus shelter in Banglore is not capable of indicating information like the arrival of the next bus.

Total Environment, a well known real estate developer based in Bangalore, India

d at e

2007 June - August

p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d

Total Environment is a premium real estate developer with up market projects all over South India. As a part of the promotional literature, I designed a series of neighborhood and access maps.

p r o j e c t c h a l l e n g e s

The challenge for the neighborhood maps was to represent diverse utilities in a small geographical area using icons, colours and numbers. The challenge for the access maps was to simplify street patterns and still convey a clear idea of the access of each individual project.

For both kinds of maps, it was necessary to adhere to the look and feel of the brand including colours and typography.

Canara Bank, a well known Indian Public Sector Bank

d at e

2007 March - December

p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d

Ray+Keshavan | The Brand Union undertook the re-branding of the public sector Canara Bank, the second largest public sector bank. The project involved the redesign of the brand identity and a range of brand channels. I was the part of the team that worked on the customer interface collateral such as cheque books, application forms, passbooks and pay-in-slips.

p r o j e c t c h a l l e n g e s

Most of the applications of the previous design were of very low usability. Canara Bank was and still is one of India’s largest public sector bank with a large number of patrons. All the collateral of the previous design had never been designed keeping usability in mind. Customers were used to this, and thus never complained. Also the fact that the client was a bank, the legal content dominated the customer’s understanding and aesthetics.

Some of the challenges included Canara Bank, being a pan Indian bank required all the applications to be rendered in multiple languages. Usability was one other important issue.

One of the biggest challenges in this project was to understand the content and then represent it in a manner that was understandable by a customer with a diverse educational level.

Environmental branding for GMR, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad

d at e

2008 January - March

p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d

I was a part of the team that conceptualized and executed the environmental graphics for the newly opened RajivGandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh, India.

The general theme of the airport was about journeys and how they can be explained and visualized. The spectrum of concepts for this, varied from the traditional Indian art-forms to plain and interesting information graphics depending on the location inside the airport.

An interesting aspect of this airport was that it had been designed to incorporate a lot of glass. The glass panels allowed light into the airport, making the entire space very capacious. The graphics were designed to utilize the transparent quality of the glass. Therefore the simple clean graphics which blended into each other like layers.

m y r o l e

The two concepts that I worked on from the conceptualization stage to the artworks stage were:

concep t 1

A set of 40 typographic panels that showcase distances from Hyderabad to some of the major cities of the world.

concep t 2

Illustrations of some of the traditional dance and art forms of India

Environmental branding for GMR, Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi

d at e

2008 October - December

p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d

I was a part of the team that visualized the environmental graphics for the creative pitch for the new Common Wealth Games terminal at the recently built Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi.

The general theme of this new terminal was about ‘Celebrating India’. This concept celebrated both the traditional past of India as well the future. The spectrum of concepts for this, varied from exploring the diversity in India in terms of traditions, cultures, and behaviors to connecting India to the world using various kinds of developing technology through plain and interesting information graphics depending on the location inside the airport.

m y r o l e

One of the concepts for this theme was travel and connecting India, mainly New Delhi to the rest of the world. I designed two maps based on the concept.

m a p 1

This map inspired from the London Tube Map, used New Delhi as the starting point and depicted all major cities of the world as stations on the map, thus showing how the entire world is now connected.

m a p 2

This map showcased all the different modes of transport and estimates of time taken to reach a place with the particular mode of transport. The modes of transport used in this map were modes that are charateristic to India. The facts indicated in this map e.g. the time estimated for each mode were only speculations and were not proven to be exact.

p r o j e c t b a c k g r o u n d

A catalogue designed for the “Anahat Nad” performance conducted by Srishti for an exhibition at ARS Electronica, Linz – Austria. “Anahat Nad means “un-struck sound”.“Anahat Nad” refers to an all-pervasive sound, a sound that exists everywhere in other words, ”free source”. It is not about hearing this sound but to experience it by quieting your mind. This catalogue has to contain basic information relating to the performance such as the explanation of the term “Anahat Nad”, the artistic concept of the performance, a brief introduction to Kabir, the poems that are going to be performed at the performance, some information about the artists performing, their individual achievements and their music style and finally a glossary of all the terms and a directory of contacts.

p r o j e c t c h a l l e n g e s

1. This catalogue had to be designed for a foreign audience that meant that the Hindi words of the poems had to be written in English and an explanation of each line had to given to understand the beauty of the poem.

2. The catalogue had to have a serene, calm, non-cluttered, respectable layout, to represent the free-ness of the concept “Anahat Nad”.

3. The typography was the most beautiful aspect of this catalogue. The hindi or the Devnagiri script was used to bring in an Indian touch to the catalogue. It also added a sense of fluidity to the layout.

4. The graphic element of broken strings was used through out the book as an metaphor to represent ‘the silent sound’ and this served as an element that connected the different chapters of the book.
