Youth Director UpdateBy Doug Barton and Jessica Barton

As we stated in the April issue, the Youth Director Seeking Committee has found and the Board of Elders has hired a new youth director. So here is a quick update to answer some of your questions.

Nate Kowallis and his wife, Erryn, did in fact welcome their third child on March 19, Callum Bay Kowallis. Both baby and mom are doing well and this new family of five is figuring out a new pace of life with three kids under age four.

Nate, Erryn, and Callum came to the Seattle area for a quick 24-hour visit on April 11-12. We toured the church, Burien, and had a small dinner for them to meet some of the youth leaders and search committee members.

They will be moving up here with help from a couple of our church members in mid-May; Nate’s official start date will be Monday, May 13. They are very excited to become part of the Boulevard Park Church family.

Good bye, SeattleBy M.E.*

On May 29 I’ll leave from SeaTac Airport on my journey back to N’Djamena, Chad for another 2-3 year term. And quite a journey it will be! I leave SeaTac 5/29 at 3:30 p.m. I’ll have a 22 hour layover in New York, nearly 2 hours in Paris, and 1.5 hours in Abuja, Nigeria before arriving in Chad on 5/31 at 9:30 p.m.! Whew! Your prayers are appreciated.

Until then, I’m finishing up last-minute to do’s and visits, helping with an ESL class, and babysitting for MOPS.

Many thanks for all your prayers and support! Love, M

Health and Hope in PNGBy Ellyn Roe

BPC Global Workers Noe and Lisa Martinez ask us to pray for Martha, the mother of the Tigak tribe teaching leader Paska. Martha recently entered end-stage kidney failure, and possibly has cancer, but Lisa reports, “She has already been a wonderful testimony to her family, telling them how she is at peace, knowing that she will be with the Lord when she dies!” PLEASE BPC Senders, pray for this dear Sister, her family, and the GW’s who have grown to love her.

In early May the Martinez family will travel to Australia to have Noe’s and Lisa’s medical concerns properly assessed and treated. They ask us Senders, “Please pray with us about these health matters. It feels like an interruption to have go to Cairns. But the Lord knew all along, and so we ‘just roll with it,’ and entrust it all into His hands. Please pray for peace during this month as we wait and wonder about diagnoses and options. Many of you know what it is to ‘wait and wonder.’ Mostly we have peace, because we know it does us no good to be anxious. But nevertheless, we have many moments where it’s a struggle!”

Full Days Fly By KD*

It feels like recent weeks have been very full and have flown by, with a mix of office work, language learning, substitute teaching, time with Chad-ian neighbors and friends, etc. The other day I had the chance to celebrate the completion of my neighbor’s Master’s degree. It was a new cultural experience to go to the presentation and evaluation of her thesis project. Then later I was glad to bake her a cake and visit her at home. There’s so much I could share, but that’s one tiny glimpse of recent life.

Family and Tigak believers bring encouragement to Martha at the haus sik (hospital), a boat trip away from the tribe’s village.

A girls’ sleepover at the recent Papua New Guinea Islands Region Conference for Global Workers gave Amelia Harder (under

window) and Jocie Martinez (middle of threesome) the fun of reconnecting and also of making new friends.

There exists no ambiguity in the biblical record regarding God’s absolute sovereignty over everything. Nevertheless, we often struggle to harmonize God’s extensive control and human responsibility. Usually the problem sounds something like this; “If God declares the end from the beginning, and nothing happens that has not been accomplished by His hand, then how can God justly hold men accountable for their actions?”

My most honest answer is, “I don’t know.” That being said, the Bible clearly teaches both. Although I may find it confusing, thankfully, God does not. I must embrace the two tracks without feeling compelled to exceed what is written in Scripture. Understanding everything about the unfathomable riches of God is not a prerequisite to genuine discipleship. God’s knowledge and wisdom far exceed my own (Isa. 55:8-9).

It is important to understand all that God has revealed to us through His word. In an effort to understand what God has said on the subject, I offer the following insights.

God’s Sovereign Decrees: Divine DeterminationIn Romans 9:6-21, the apostle Paul lays

out the fact of God’s divine determination. Despite traditional birth-order blessings, God sovereignly chose Isaac over Ishmael to be the descendant through which covenant blessing would come (Rom. 9:6-9). Similarly, God chose Jacob over Esau (Rom. 9:10-13). As if to make it clear that God’s choice was unmerited, Paul adds the qualification that the choice was made when “they were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad” (Rom. 9:11). Finally, Paul illustrates God’s sovereign determination by hardening Pharaoh’s heart (Rom. 9:14-18). According to His good pleasure (Ps. 115:3), God exercised His sovereign right to strengthen Pharaoh’s hatred of Israel for the purpose of demon-strating His glory and superiority over the Egyptians and their gods. God has mercy on whomever He desires, and He hardens whomever He will. The point is clear. God does whatever He wants (Ps. 135:6). He sovereignly determined the course of events

Here I Stand

The Sovereignty of God – PART 2By Pastor Bud

to accomplish His purpose. This is why Paul anticipates objections. “What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!” (Rom. 9:14). Or, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” (Rom. 9:19).

Man’s Simple Decisions: Self-Determination The anticipated Roman objection

to Paul’s teaching on God’s control over mankind actually makes sense to us. After all, if God is absolutely sovereign (and He is), then who can resist His will? The obvious answer to this question is no one (Job 42:2). But, what about man’s freedom? Although I don’t know how to unravel this conundrum, it is helpful to consider man’s faculty of choice.

Freedom of the Will, in my opinion, is one of Jonathan Edwards’ greatest works. In it, he describes the will as the mind choosing. He goes on to say that when the moment of choice arrives, man will always choose according to the strongest inclination of his heart at the moment of choice. Because a person’s inclination is born out of what he desires, and desires are a reflection of man’s nature, man’s choice is not entirely free. Rather, it is anchored to his nature.

At this point, it is important to make a distinction. There is a difference between free will and free choice. The former speaks of an unfettered and uninfluenced will. The latter speaks of the mechanism of choice being exercised without external compulsion. If one accepts Edwards’ premise, which I do, the mind can only choose according to its strongest inclination. But, if one is completely free of influence (inclination), then how will the mind ever choose? It’s absurd to think that we choose things apart from our desires. Even when options are limited to bad and worse, we choose the option that we believe to be most desirable. Nevertheless, even when our options are diminished, we choose freely. No one is forcing us to choose one over the other. This is self-determination. You choose freely in accordance with your strongest inclination (desire).

Please join us on

Tuesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in Room 431

for dessert, discussion and fellowship!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Lisa Bowen at

[email protected] or by phone at 206.243.2600.

As we head into our summer months, and our in-house Bible Studies take a break, we’d like to invite you to join us for our “late-spring and all-of-summer” book club! At the beginning of the four upcoming months, our reading selection will be revealed, followed by a dessert and discussion time on the last Tuesday of that month.

For the month of May, we will be reading the book entitled The Baggage Handler, by David Rawlings. Here’s a little glimpse into this month’s selection:

A hothead businessman coming to the city for a showdown meeting to save his job.

A mother of three hoping to survive the days at her sister’s house before her niece’s wedding.

And a young artist pursuing his father’s dream so he can keep his own alive.

When David, Gillian and Michael each take the wrong suitcase from the baggage claim, the airline directs them to retrieve their bags at a mysterious facility in a deserted part of the city. There they meet the enigmatic Baggage Handler, who shows them there is more in their baggage than what they have packed, and carrying it with them is slowing them down in ways they can’t imagine. And they must deal with it before they can leave.

“Look, the problem isn’t you’ve been handed some baggage. Everyone has baggage. It’s that it’s difficult for you to move forward with your life. Every time an opportunity presents itself, you can’t move quickly because this weight drags behind you.” A single tear streaked down the Baggage Handler’s face. “That’s been there for a very long time. A very long time. I’m sorry about what happened…but you don’t need to carry this baggage. You have a choice.”

Sovereignty, from page 3Man’s choices are both determined and

free. They are determined by God’s ultimate sovereignty under which all things exist. Yet, they are self-determined because man freely and without compulsion chooses according to his strongest desire.

Let me try to give you a visual handle. These two truths are like the two rails of a train track. They never intersect and they are both leading in the same direction. The only way for the train to move forward is to use both rails and maintain their dis-tinct positions. Thinking in terms of two rails, on one rail God ordains everything for His divine purposes. On the other rail we

choose freely making us responsible for our choices.

Paul teaches that these two realities are at work in our sanctification when he says, “So then, my beloved, just as you have obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Phil. 2:12-13). In every aspect of our spiritual growth, God sovereignly works (Rom. 8:28; Phil. 1:6), and we choose to cooperate with the Spirit by disciplining ourselves for the purpose of Godliness (1 Tim. 4:7).

It’s Almost Baby Bottle Time!On Mother’s Day, May 12, join the fun and get your Care Net Baby Bottle bank, available in the MPR between (and maybe after) the morning services. These bottle-banks should be returned on Father’s Day, June 16, with ANY amount in coins, bills and checks, all of which will enable Care Net of Puget Sound to continue providing life-affirming assistance to anyone facing an unplanned or under-supported pregnancy, hurting from a previous abortion, needing parenting support or seeking relational guidance. Care Net of Puget Sound is a Christ-centered, nonprofit ministry, receiving no federal or state funding, and relying solely on private donations such as, you guessed it, those made in the Baby Bottle Campaign. Here’s hoping you might be able to contribute generously again this year. Questions? Contact Ellyn Roe, Care Net Liaison to BPC: [email protected]

Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World” by Max LucadoThis video series leads the viewers to reflect on the promises of Philippians 4:4-8 and to ultimately rest in the “peace of God which surpasses all understanding.”

Lucado says, “The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, but the prison of anxiety is op-tional. It’s the life of perpetual anxiety that Paul wants to address. Don’t let anything in life leave you perpetually in angst.”

“The news about our anxiety is enough to make us anxious,” says Lucado. But there’s a prescription for dealing with it.

“With [God’s] help you will learn to face the calamities of life. You’ll learn how to talk yourself off the ledge. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will learn to view bad news through the lens of sovereignty; to discern the lies of Satan and tell yourself the truth. You will manifest a gentleness that is evident to others. Anxiety comes with life. But it doesn’t have to dominate your life.”

All are welcome to join hosts Doug and Lisa Barton and David Siedenburg in this five-week series from April 28 through May 26. The class meets in Room 442 at 8:45 a.m.

• The adjusted schematic drawings for our Phase I renovations are now complete. As we go forward, the process will unfold as follows:– After Trustee approval, the Elders will review and approve.– If the above groups approve Phase I in time, we will present the plans

at the Annual Meeting in June for congregational confirmation.– After congregational confirmation, the schematic drawings will be

submitted to the architect (Steve Hammer) for construction drawings.– Once drawings are complete, we will submit our application for permits.

• It is not likely that any renovations will begin until the first half of next year.
